The Silver Snail is my favorite comic shop in Toronto. A little more expensive, yes, but the layout, staff and atmosphere are excellent.

Oh, sorry. I thought you said "Silver Snail Singing." That would've made my day, though . . . too bad.

It was great to finally meet you, Gail. Loved the panel discussion on the last day of the con too. Is Brian Azzarello always that surly?
Yeah, the Snail is one of the best stores I've been to.
Unfortunately they never have sales. And at the con they never reduce their prices. But if you want some obscure title or to fill in the holes in your collection there is no better store.

I can't say enough about how kind and helpful the staff of this store was, and I love the way it feels like a real store, which some places do not. THANK YOU to the staff, management and owners for the hospitality and skittles.
And thanks to Becky and Amanda, who kick so much ass and are SO inspiring.

Yeah the staff of the Snail are made up of real hard-core comic fans.

The Toronto Snail is pretty cool. The Ottawa Snail has a good selection, but isn't nearly as extensive.

Actually they do have the occasional sale. They don't out on to many because they already sell there comics at U.S. cover price and discount there trades and HC. So essentially they put on a sale every day. What more could you ask for?

Yeah the staff of the Snail are made up of real hard-core comic fans.
Sorry, but that couldn't be further from the truth.
My wife went in there looking for copies of THUNDER Agents as a birthday gift for me - telling them I was a big Wally Wood, Reed Crandall and Gil Kane fan.
She was asked "Why would you want to buy something that terrible?"
They convinced her that what I would really love (for my 30th birthday, no less) was the hardcover Ultimate Spider-Man vol 1.
For the most part, I find the staff there pretty useless when it comes to pre-1980 comics. In addition, the fact that you have to ask to see most Silver Age books is a huge turn off for me.
Believe me, as a kid every streetcar ride downtown to the Silver Snail was like a trip to Disneyland, but I just feel as though they've rested on their laurels for the past 10-15 years and it's become the Wal-Mart of the Toronto Comic Book scene.
I'd rather spend my cash at Paradise Comics or The Beguiling.
I am really glad that you had a good time in Toronto, Gail and that they treated you well.

This hasn't been my experience. Granted, most of my comics needs are post-1980, so I've never had a problem with them.
And, you know, you can still be a hard-core comic geek and not be an expert in comics that are more than 25 years old. Silver Snail is aiming for a younger crowd, so their staff is generally more knowledgable about the stuff that was first published after most those customers were born.

I agree that they know lots about what's come out in recent years, but I believe that a store can cater to readers of all ages. They have a good back issue inventory, but it is largely inaccessible except by request. They also have a rather lacklustry Reprint TPB (Darke Horse Little Lulus, Masterworks, Fantagraphics collections etc...) in comparison to other shops in Toronto.
I am just a little disappointed in the store. It's only minutes from my office, and I'd likely spend cash there but they don't have much of what I am looking for and I don't like the way the staff has treated my non-comic book fan wife when she's shop there for gift for me, so I shop elsewhere.
Granted, I am but one person, so it's no real problem for them - but that's my take on the place.
Apologies for the thread drift.

God, I love the Snail. Too bad I can never get down there..
Damn suburban closet stores...

I've read interviews with him where he can seem to be rather...sarcastic. However he was super nice to me when I met him at the con. He even asked me my name ( I was wearing a name tag-as a volunteer) and wrote it in the two trades I had him signed. And he shook my hand.
Unfortunately they never have sales. And at the con they never reduce their prices. But if you want some obscure title or to fill in the holes in your collection there is no better store.
No but they do sell new books at US cover and peg the trades to the exchange rate as opposed to just using the (inflated) pricing by the companies. And they don't inflate their prices on action figures or on statues. I bought a Batman paper weight from them for 14 dollars with tax. And I saw people selling the same paperweight for 30 (USD) on ebay.

Sorry about your wife's bad experience. I don't know when it took place. I can remember being less than impressed with the service maybe five---ten years ago. But I wouldn't say that now. I find the staff to be really wonderful and friendly. They've never been less than nice to me (such is the benefit of being an older fan ;) ). One of the staff members even knows that I'm a huge Batman fan.
I'd rather spend my cash at Paradise Comics or The Beguiling.
Yes I agree about the Beguilling is great. They specialize mostly in independent/anime/manga stuff. But also carry mainstream stuff as well.
The service is really great, it's one of the stores I make sure to frequent. if you have any questions or concerns just ask for Peter he's one of the owners.

Azzarello was great, wish I had talked to him longer. I kept looking back and there was never anyone at his table. Dave Johnson was pretty cool too. Me and 2 buddys talked to him about politics and conspiracy theory stuff for like 45 minutes.

As the sponsor for the whole Women of Comics event, I just wanted to say that all the ladies who attended the convention were fantastic. Gail Simone and her husband Scott were the nicest people. I'm so glad they enjoyed Toronto and we would love to have them back next year.

I had Gail autograph three copies of BoP! Which was great, because you can trade in three Gails for one Devin Grayson! :p

Has Beguiling really been around since 1987? That's what their website says, but back around the late 80's/early 90's I used to go to Toronto for the summer, and I checked out a lot of comic shops there. Never heard of Beguiling........I would go to Silver Snail, Dragon Lady, Pandora's Box, and a few others. There was one shop that was real close to Silver Snail and was rather hard to find, but I can't remember the name of the place. They were on the 2nd or 3rd floor of some building and it was hard to tell which door you enter the building through.
