Okay I filed my tax return on time and by my calulations I should have gotten around $2000 in taxes from them. I filed to get my return electronically. So I checked my back account today and I got $300 from the IRS.

Will I be getting an explanation on why there is such a discrepency? Does anyone know how I can get a better explanation from the IRS on why $1700 is missing from my return?

If it's a matter of $1700 it may be in your best interest to hire an accountant. Even if it's an H&R Block type. You can have your returns audited by your accountant for the last several years even. So it may pay off to spend the $100 or so for H&R Block (or some such entity) to get you the missing $1700.

Hope it works out for you! :)

Are you sure that wasn't your state refund?

What exactly does your direct deposit say?

Call them. I got about $100 less one year, so I called. Seems that on the bottom of the first page is the number you put at the top of the next page.

I transposed the two numbers in the 2nd and thrid position when I copied it. They catch that stuff. If you made a mistake in a calculation, they catch that, too.

Just call and ask.

Nope I have my state refund and that was exactly what I asked for. Which makes my federal return seem even more suspect. I will definitely give them a call or track down an explanation. Thanks for all the replies folks :)

Next time you go to the hospital emergency room, look around you at all the people getting free treatment and coverage.

Or go down to the welfare office sometime.

Heck - if you see a homeless person asking for spare change, look in their cup.

THAT'S WHERE IT WENT.

Start here--

You'll need the exact total from the return you filed. Once you log in with the proper total, you'll get a pop-up with the IRS reasoning behind your reduction. It won't be specific to your case, but it will reflect the general categories. Use this as a guide to recheck your calculations in the areas the IRS claims to have found.

Once you've got your ducks in a row, call the IRS. If you don't get anywhere, go to a tax professional--you can refile up to 7 years from the date of your original filing.

H&R Block (not recommending them, just using them as an example) has made a thrifty business out of doing free examinations of people's returns, correcting favorable errors, then taking a commission.

good luck!
