So Dan Slott talked me into pre-ordering comics. And now that I'm getting the Previews catalogue, I'm see a whole new world of Indy books that I was never exposed to through my LCS.

But I don't know what's good and what's not. I'm hoping to get some recommendations on some good and fun Indy books.

I have the current Previews issue and already some things have caught my eye. Like the Virgin Comics and the Bumperboy books from Adhouse.

And I want to find out what Indy fans like and think is worth checking out. So, if anyone has recommendations I would appreciate them. Thanks!

I think what matters more than what other fans like is what you will enjoy. Indie comics can be very person in tastes so what some other fans like you might not.

What kinds of stories do you generaly enjoy? What kinds of TV shows, movies, novels, and other media do you like?

Going through Previews can be hard especially if you are not familar with the titles or publishers.

Bumperboy is cool if you like fun and cute stories. The art is on the clean-line and simple side.

Virgin Comics has pretty much just started so people do not know what to make of it yet. But from what I've read, it seems like an Indian (as in the country) take on fantasy based stories.

Well I guess I was hoping to get people to list books they enjoy and maybe describe a bit why they like them. I know that I enjoy a variety of different things, so I was hoping to just try a bunch of stuff and see what I like.

Generally, if it has good writing I'll like it. And if it's more on the fun-side, I'll really like it.

I know I've heard some good things about Oni and I see they have a cool-looking pirate GN coming out.

The reason I'm checking out Virgin comics is because I like the idea of a push for comics of non-American/Japanese cultures. Both Virgin and the upcoming The 99 (http://www.newsarama.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68761) interest me on that level.

So Brandon, I guess I'm just asking people to shout out something they enjoy and I'll look into it. The only thing I'm not going to be interested in is manga comics from like TokyoPop. Other than that I'm open to anything.

Well we do have a "Previews Picks" thread every month. I'm starting this month's thread over the weekend.

You should be able to get some good ideas from there.

Nevermind. The Fourth Rail (http://www.thefourthrail.com/features/0506/downthelinemay.shtml) put up an article about this month's Previews and Randy Lander talks about a lot of indy books. That's pretty much what I was looking for in the first place.

You should check out http://www.comixpress.com for small press/indy books that may never get wide recognition but are quality reads nonetheless.

It's one-stop shopping for small press!

I would like to recommend Dorothy. You can see some interior pages at our website www.dorothyofoz.com and read how we make it, since the style is a unique combination of photography, cg, and 3d modelling.

It's a Great read.

I would recomend Samurai elf. Its made by some indy in B'klyn. You can actually read the first 23 pages at www.iberianpress.com. I found a copy of it when I went up to Toronto vacation. It's a really cool manga sized book, about 182 pages. That's of course if you like the manga/euro hybrid stuff. Check it out it's cool.

The reason I'm checking out Virgin comics is because I like the idea of a push for comics of non-American/Japanese cultures. Both Virgin and the upcoming The 99 interest me on that level.

Im not so interested in The 99, as it looks a bit naff, but Virgin Comics has the potential to eventually rival Marvel and DC if they play their cards right - ill be getting all their lines from issue one.

Im a fan of Indian mythology and culture (I guess that technically makes me an amateur 'Indologist'), and I have been waiting for someone to grab hold of Indian mythology for ages - it has as much potential as manga.
