View Full Version : X-Factor's art: Am I the only one who's missing Madrox's Pablo Raimondi?

I mean, Sook's style sure is pretty but it's kind of... I dunno. From a storytelling perspective, I don't like it. The "camera" always so close to the characters is kind of oppresive. Reading the book actually hurts my eyes. Also, I get the fact that he's going for a noir look but it can get pretty ridiculous sometimes. If it gets in the way of the story and what the drawing is trying to portray, drop it. My poor eyes will thank you (first issue, anyone?).
Again, I love Sook's style but I just feel like there's something amiss.

Calero I happen to think would make a good, say, Daredevil artist if he polished his poses so they'd be more dinamic but I'm not liking him here. I think it's mainly because of the way his art clashes with Sook's (could you fill me up on what's the story? Behind the two-pencillers at once deal, I mean?) but also because he doesn't quite seem to fit.

Am I crazy? Way too nitpicky? Should I shut up? What's Raimondi doing nowadays?
:(
My love-hate relationship with this book has reached a critical point.

I love Sook's style, i thought his work for Seven Soldiers: Zatanna and the first few issues of X-Factor was brilliant... And while i like Calero's art, i was a little annoyed/disappointed when i heard that Sook was leaving the title and i'm hoping that soon Raimondi will be brought in as the regular artist (the Madrox mini was great!!).

To me, Ryan Sook's art beats the crap out of Pablo Raimondi's. Not that I dislike Pablo, I just think Sook's art is gorgeous and Raimondi's art is above average. I miss Sook, and he's hardly even left.

I think for the most part, Raimondi's art looks better when the characters are farther away. In some close-ups, there's facial distortion that's recognizable in a lot of panels. But yeah, he really is good and all. I just LOVE Sook.

By the way, Pablo Raimondi recently drew Brubaker's Books of Doom, ending shortly.

Ah! Thanks for the heads up.
I'd heard some interesting things about Books of Doom but had no idea Raimondi was the artist.

It's good stuff, if you like Doom. Or if you don't. Good comics is good comics. :)

yeah i agree with the above.

and i think so far Calero isn't doing a good job on the book... i mean take the whole bit where the guy got caught in the rope last issue... it was so hard to figure out

For the people complaining about Calero: you should know that he's only a temporary artist until the (unknown) regular artist gets his/her stuff in gear.

As far as Raimondi's art goes, I didn't care for his renderings of Rhane and Guido- both of whom I feel are very important for the book. Maybe it was me, but I felt the Maddrox mini had a sluggish, depressing feel to it. But hey, if it makes the fans happy and keeps sales high, please bring on the Raimondi.

calero is penciling x-factor until at least issue 12. mike marts said that after that, we'll see. no replacement has been mentioned thus far, though.
i would prefer raimondi over calero, personally.

if i can't have sook, i would take raimondi, i suppose. i don't really think his work is all THAT great, but it is above par for marvel these days.

Umm.. ya. That's basically what I said. Marvel's intention is to get a new penciler, but up to ish 12 it will be Calero. Issue 7 has a guest penciler, Ariel Oliveretti (spelling?), which I'm looking forward to. And that is all from PADs mouth.

Also, in case anyone wants some new discussion fodder: Jae Lee was supposed to be the regular penciler for X-Factor. They switched him for Sook at the last moment (I'm assuming because they gave him the Dark Tower Books with PAD).
