I thought I'd jump on the bandwagon and start a thread of my fan art....

because..... umm.... I can?

This is my first ever attempt at a Hellboy painting, a blend of the comic and movie elements:

Next up, the art I did for last year's holiday exchange. This is pen and ink on bristol, 9" x 12"

If anyone wants to color, please do. EL, no fair just coloring Abe.

My first attempt at a Hellboy bust. I decided to make my own because at the time the Bowen bust was impossible to get for a reasonable price. I used Super Sculpey over an armature of aluminum foil for HB, and clay over wood for the base. Overall I like it, but if I did it over again he definitely wouldn't be so smooth. My inspiration was a panel from Wake the Devil, when Hellboy is following the blood trail of the Nazi cyborg to Guirescu's dad.

Gorgeous stuff. I'd say more, but uh...I'm already up too late from working on costume stuff, and I have work tomorrow.

One question though - how the heck did you get that Hellboy sculpture done with Sculpey so smooth? I can't make Sculpey work the way I want it to for the life of me. Even after kneeding the stuff for awhile, it still doesn't like me. Perhaps it's just that I don't do sculpture all that often and just haven't had the practice...but do you have any tips?

Your fingers alone are the best tool for smoothing large areas, but for tight details use a brush dipped in Sculpey Clay Softener (formerly Sculpey diluent), 91% isopropyl alcohol, or odorless Turpenoid. The Clay Softener has the slowest effect, and Turpenoid the fastest. Use sparingly- too much of any of these liquids will melt fine details. Brush until smooth, progressing towards softer bristled brushes.

After baking, you can also sand the clay. Wet/dry sandpaper works the best.

Thankee, sir. I don't smoke, but I'm thinking I may need to start a lunchtime sketch program. Not today, though. I'm buying the Hellboy DVD today.

The logo on the base was easy. I took black & white art to a shop that makes rubber stamps. Makes perfect raised lettering for stuff like this. I just glued it to the base and sculpted around it to blend. I'm an old Aurora model kit fiend, and every kit had a character nameplate, so its ingrained in me. Glue fumes still take me back to those days...:)

My two oldest brothers shared a bedroom growing up, and the younger of the two had ALL the Universal monster kits built and painted, lined up on top of his dresser. That was what got me hooked. I could never paint like him, but building models was one of my fondest memories of childhood.

One day, my brothers got into a fight, and the oldest knocked all the kits to the floor. Only Drac came out unbroken. The rest were sadly thrown away, and never replaced:(

On a happier note, here's my Screw-On Head sculpt:

Wow. That's really lovely. I like the Art Nouveau style.

Damn, you're a master of lines, 'specially as you don't do that digitally.
Thank you! I worked almost exclusively in scratchboard for the first several years of my professional career. I worked in a style patterned off old engravings, so I am very conscious of line quality. Throughout the early 90's I was swamped with scratchboard jobs. The style eventually led me to do a couple of stamp commissions from the US Postal Service, but I haven't touched scratchboard much in the past several years. Its a dying art. Most clients want digital art or photography now. :(

I'm glad you like my drawing, though! :)

You don't see enough of my crap? Well, here's on of those scratchboard pieces I was just talking about, this one is Shiva from Hindu mythology. On the left side of the image, he holds the drum of Creation. On the right side he holds the flame of Destruction.

Too Goddamn many hours! Every white line had to be scratched out of a black inked clay surface.... I seriously don't recall the total hours, but around 40 would be a safe guess.

The color is airbrushed and handpainted on illustration board, and the scratchboard line art was shot on a clear film positive and positioned over the color. If you recall the description of the "blueline" method Mignola used for some of his painted color cover art (from the Art of Hellboy), that is the same method I used to make sure I painted within the lines.

As for the spongebob thingy, I was torn between going into a spongebob-hating fit or admitting to the genius of the mix. Still not sure what to chose. The hate is strong in me. Rah.

Anyways, I love how you have your own style instead of just immitating Mignola as much as possibles.

Thanks for the nice comments, Mara!

Here's where I stand with the Hellboy bust castings for board members:

I have official "OK" from Scott Allie to make reproductions for members here only; price will be to cover materials used in the moldmaking and casting only, not for profit.

Nelson Costa (rhboyd's friend who is sculpting a Hellboy mask on another thread) will make the molds, and may make resin casts if I can't. He can start on molds as soon as I send him the sculpture, but I have no $ to pay for the mold silicone. We have yet to work out how to buy the supplies to get started, but after that obstacle is cleared we can move forward.

I got some advice from board members the first time this sculpt was posted, and have since revised the bust to make his neck thinner and angle the horn stumps lower on his forehead. The pictures posted earlier do not show these changes. Also, on the smooth reverse side of Hellboy's chest, I have added some Mignola-style symbol carvings.

If anyone has any advice for helping this project get off the ground, feel free to chime in!

Have you considered making people pay up front to pay for the costs?

Have you considered making people pay up front to pay for the costs?
I've considered taking orders up front, to determine how many casts to pour (the more orders, the less the cost for everyone), but I can't quote a total cost per piece until I know how many are going to be made.

Another solution is to have a professional casting/moldmaking business handle the job. I have a quote from Earthbound Studios, which would charge $300.00 US for the silicone molds, plus another $14.00 per resin cast. So, for instance, 50 castings would cost each person $20.00 a piece. They wouldn't charge for any mistakes, I'm assuming. Plus, they can handle the shipping to each person as well (I don't have a cost for that yet) I've already tried making my own mold, and did a lot of damage to the original sculpture that had to be repaired. Personally, I'd feel more comfortable having Earthbound handle the job, since they would be insured against damage to my original, and I'm sure Nelson would feel awful if he were to break my sculpt (the clay is a little brittle).

I haven't even begun to cost out what it would take to paint the busts, I don't think I want to offer that service except for a few special cases (I'd like to present the Mignolas and Scott Allie with copies, for example)

JT,

Wow...what a trip through some INCREDIBLE work. I am the VERY lucky reciprient of your first art exchange piece and it is a real treasure! All of your work is so damn good, begs the question: What can't you do? ;)

I have loved the Hellbob from first sight and appreciate the update. Genius! The sculpts are also awesome and you can certainly count me in for one of the Hellboy busts you are hoping to cast. Perhaps put up a Thread for those interested in getting one and see how many would want one, figuring rough costs from there. I know they would be desired by almost all here!

Also wanted to comment on the very nice Mucha-inspired Medusa. Have been a fan of Alphonse for many years and really enjoy it when some one can manage to capture his style so well. Great job!

Thanks for sharing all your work. As said many, many times so far in this thread...keep it comin'!

I love Mucha's work too, I wish I could draw like he did! I have a book of his complete graphic works that I have consulted often for inspiration over the years, and I never get tired of seeing his work.

Below, my take on the "head in a jar" theme. I still have some texturing to do on the neck, and then painting of course, but you get the idea. Life-size Martian head, sculpted over a human skull model. Made with Sculpey, Balsa putty, rigid urethane foam, and....uh.... ping pong balls for eyes. Hey, they were the perfect size, sue me!

If it's the big coffee table book, that thing's a stunner. Alphonse Mucha was somewhat of an oddity: succeeded in the commercial art world while being completely ahead of his time. Adam Hughes owes quite a bit of his success to Mucha (like Stelfreeze to Leyendecker, Ross to Rockwell).

My dear, there are several ways to paint a pinup, most depict fully clothed women. I was serious about the offer, but I wouldn't repeat the rocket theme unless the concept behind it fit. The best pinup would incorporate one of your interests to create a theme, or if done as a gift to Fitz, one of his interests perhaps. Calm hubby down, this is in no way meant as a harrassment. If you were at all interested, I would suggest you search pinup art online to get a feel for what kind of pose, costume, or theme might suit you. If not interested, I'll say no more about it.

Sorry, Weldzilla is incapable of dancing, since he has no legs. The client agreed with the idea of a foot stomp, but would not let me show any sign of legs in the remaining animation. I had to crop some of the frames as it was to keep the pelvic region out of sight, like there was some kind of obscene Elvis thrusting going on.

Anyway, not much of an animation in terms of what people see on a daily basis, but it was fun to do. My 3D software is pretty low-end, and isn't capable of the flashy CGI.

Aw geez, so many people on this board are so insanely talented. Those sketches are amazing JT!

And the sculptures are making me swoon with jealously - as well as want to run downstairs and start practicing my Sculpty skills....

I sooo have to show the Hellbob stuff to my friend. She loves Spongebob.

So if HB = Spongebob, LoJo = Mr Crabb (or whatever his name is) and Roger = Patrick, does that mean Abe would just be Abe? ;)

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

ICBM: I don't think there are any game designers in Iowa, and I'm not in a position to move. That, and I'm such a slave to detail that I don't think I could allow myself to create low-poly models.

Kusanivy: Abe was always my stumbling block when it came to "Spongebobbing" the Hellboy universe. I suppose he'd just end up one of those generic fish characters that populate Bikini Bottom.

Petersen: Thanks! I did 3 illustrations for the book, The Ants/Grasshopper above, "The Tortoise and the Hare", and "The Bee and Jupiter". There are 15 artists involved, each illustrating 3 different fables. I'll post more info about its publication when I get more details.

HBMomma: I always thought Roger sounded like that Dauber character from the old TV show "Coach" myself. ;)

Great frog. Great son name, Clayton Thompson.
Thanks, we obviously like it too!

His little brother is Seth, and for the life of us we couldn't think of a good middle name for him. We had some friends who had just named their baby "Thomas Wayne" after Batman's dad, and as a joke I told my wife we were naming our son "Seth Ronin" after the Frank Miller story. She hates it when I do overtly fanboy stuff, so it was a good gag at the time. She could never think of another name that sounded better, so she ended up sticking with Ronin as a middle name for him. :D

What have we learned? Be careful what you wish for...

Otto66
09-15-2004, 08:14 AM
Seth R.(Ronin) Thompson. Cool. Does he ever use his middle
name or ask you what it means?

Has he started collecting
"Lone Wolf and Cub" and Asian movies?

When I have a child, would you name it? :D

JohnThompson
09-15-2004, 08:41 AM
Seth doesn't care yet about the whole name thing, probably when kids at school start asking "what the hell were your parents thinking" questions, he'll want more details. We bought the Ronin trade to keep for him, to help explain when he's older. Can't wait for that conversation. He'll probably rebel against my fanboy ways and turn into a jock. :D

No Asian culture collecting yet for Seth. He's 4 and is a HUGE railroad train fan though. Its so cool to wath him build these elaborate track systems that wind around the livingroom, weaving in and out of furniture legs.

As far as naming kids, sure! I take no responsibility for the beatings those names may bring them later in life, though...

EL: Your name is similair to mine: Kathryn Elizabeth. (crazy russian bird who enjoyed riding horses-english noblewoman)

JT: Can I join your cult? Is it like that one the man set up where you have to do a good deed evry Friday?
As for baby names, for boys it looks like Hunter, Fighter or Ryder. Maybe Logan but it's a bit popular now. For girls, Elektra (yes, spelt like that as in the comic, not the legend) or Athena. I quite like colours like carmen and silver, but Silver Webb?!?
By the way, if I'm having it, I'm naming it so it don't matter what Fitz thinks. I do quite like Seth. It's rather nice.

Good deeds are passe. Did you ever see that movie, "Pay it Foreward"? That's crap. Karma isn't allowed in my cult either. You wanna get to heaven? What have you done for me lately?:p

Unless by "good deed" you mean worshipping me, then its mandatory on a daily basis if you join.:evilsmile

By all means name your kids after gods rather than the macho "Hunter" or "Scout" type names being given out by parents now. Or, since Fitz looks so much like Bruce Willis, you could name them after Demi-gods. :D

Cool! If you're really lucky and discover bones from a new species, they'll name it after you. Since Maiasaurus is already taken, I vote for Rutasaurus!

As for baby names, for boys it looks like Hunter, Fighter or Ryder.

Seriously? My son, the one who drew my avatar, renamed himself "Fighter" a couple years ago. And everyone looks at us like we're totally insane when he introduces himself. (And this is a kid with a sister named Macha. Seems odd that "Fighter" gets more weird looks than that!)

(We named him Patrick, btw. He's the third boy; after the first two kids you name together, you start to get really annoyed with each other. "What do you mean you don't like Ulric??" "What's wrong with John?" You start looking for patterns, anything to wriggle out of having to agree on a name AGAIN. So my hubby pointed out that the first two had names of U.S. founding fathers - Thomas and Samuel - and we went from there. And yes, we considered their wives for names for the girl, too.)

Anyway, I obviously think "Fighter" would be a very cool name. :)

Sorry to quote myself, but I did a search online and discovered there already is a species of dinosaur named Rutasaurus! A recently discovered skeleton from the Aswam Valley dig site suggests a very unique looking creature, judging from the skull. Here is an artist's rendering:

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

That's awesome! Well shopped, too. There was a second that it just seemed like a really bizarre dinosaur.

As for collecting fossils, I'd pick one up for ya if it wasn't going to cost me a $10,000 fine. I'll just be looking. You need to have a special permit to collect fossils in that area. It sure is tempting though. Last time I was in there I found a crocodile tooth and part of a turtle's shell in a microwash (a small sandbar in an ancient stream where bits of dead animals would wash up and be fossilized) as well as numerous vertebrae and ribs from large herbivores, probably duckbills. They're everywhere, just like regular rocks. At one spot on the trail there was a huge femur sticking out of a wall of earth and everyone got really excited. The guide was really casual about it: "Oh the paleos know it's here. If it was scientifically significant, they'd dig it up."

The dig site we went to was really interesting too: a spot where a whole bunch of centrosaurs drowned, supporting the theory that many herbivores travelled in herds. So there are all these skeletons laid out on the ground. Sooper-dooper cool.

Your next family holiday maybe, JT: http://www.cd.gov.ab.ca/enjoying_alberta/parks/featured/dinosaur/flashindex.asp

This feels like a FAR SIDE cartoon. We see a cutaway of the hillside showing that the other end of the femur is stuck in a flying saucer wreck, complete with skulls of three eyed aliens.
