Well, they would check cross-border packages, right? ;)
Uhhh....

No.

That "homeland security" stuff is all just posturing to placate the masses. If the US Postal Service will allow letters full of anthrax to be shipped around within our borders, I doubt they'd have trouble with a rock coming from Canada. :D

I'd love to, someday. Unfortunately, in my current financial state, my next family vacation will be to Chuck E. Cheese. :(

Man, I'd love to go there again. Of course, I'd promptly get thrown out for trying to pants one of the animatronics. =O

Great frog and great kids names.

Dinos rock. I'm going out to Dinosaur Provincial Park at the end of the month to look for fossils. You need a guide because it's a protected area--there are dino bones everywhere. Super-cool.

*sigh* I have friends in Alberta and ever since I was a little kid they've told be I HAVE to get out there to see it. You lucky lucky person you.

The dig site we went to was really interesting too: a spot where a whole bunch of centrosaurs drowned, supporting the theory that many herbivores travelled in herds. So there are all these skeletons laid out on the ground. Sooper-dooper cool.

I've read about that spot (or spots similar to it). Many of the bones had fracture marks on them, making the paleontologists suspect that the dinos had been trampled to death. Sort of the dino equivalent of a herd of migrating wildebeasts crossing a river. A couple lose their footing, slip underwater and get trampled by the rest of the herd.

This feels like a FAR SIDE cartoon. We see a cutaway of the hillside showing that the other end of the femur is stuck in a flying saucer wreck, complete with skulls of three eyed aliens.

LOL. Too true. Where's Gary Larson when you need him?

Then of course a mudslide reveals said flying saucer and before you know it the B.P.R.D is investigating.

Greetings. I saw your art work--and loved it, of course. I decided to go ahead and color in two of the black and white pictures. It's my first time actually doing this, but I was happy with the results on the Lobster one and the one with HB, Liz, and Abe turned out alright too. I used photoshop for both. I have never used photoshop to color in anything. I am fond of using it to create signatures, to edit things, and I think for my first time I did a great job. The colors I use added texture to the picture. I am a fan of the Hellboy movie, I haven't read the comics so I just colored everything in a unique way and in my own style.

For Lobster Johnson I tried to make him and the zombies dark. I gave it a very cool look, the zombies being a couple shades of green and Lobster a couple shades of blue. I tried giving it texture with the black paint. It has a real comic book look, I think. I gave it a light background which I think just enhanced the comic book look by a huge factor. This one took me probably 3:30 hours of straight work, maybe a bit more.

http://pic6.picturetrail.com/VOL165/2178562/4246810/67000049.jpg

For Hellboy, Liz, and Abe, well, I had some issues with Liz. I don't like having to do the realistic hair and skin. I made her hair blue, she dyed it. Abe was easy, I wasn't sure what blues to use for him but I was satisfied with the results. I think I could have done better but I wanted him to be unique. Now Hellboy was a challenge and really fun. I actually used 4 or 5 reds on him. I have a darker shade or two around his eyes, inside his ear, on his horns, and around his lips. Before I painted his face he looked like he had lipstick and eyeliner on. I am more than happy with the end result, had I just painted his face the one color he looked like complete crap. This project really put up my skill.

You'll notice I left your signature on them too. I was always thinking about doing the goon. If you have any other pictures I'd like a shot at them. SO, what do you think?

Melly, thanks. Coming from a sculptress like yourself, that is high praise indeed.

This is another old sculpture of mine, recently dug out of the closet. I decided I need to get some of these old projects finished up, so I can start on some new sculptures without feeling guilty about the old neglected ones.

I was originally inspired to sculpt a Luke Skywalker because no licensed figure ever did justice to Mark Hamill's likeness. I didn't exactly nail it either, but it's closer than most, in my opinion. I'll probably re-do it someday...

This is 1/6th scale, and I plan on creating a bust that will fit with the line of Star Wars busts being produced by Dark Horse and Gentle Giant Studios.

I started with the head separate from the body, so I could concentrate on the likeness. If that wasn't right, the whole piece is a failure. Once satisfied with the head, I baked it to keep from ruining it as I worked on the rest of the piece. I made a mold of the head and have made a resin cast to stick on a 12" action figure body. The reddish marks are from using my Dremel tool and polishing compound to get a smoother finish to the face.

The tunic is very roughly sculpted at this point, and will eventually be smoothed by being brushed with Sculpey Clay Softener. I'll of course post more as the sculpture progresses.

How ya plan on doing the lit saber?

JohnThompson
09-26-2004, 12:53 AM
I have already made a saber out of aluminum tubes and a translucent blue plexiglas rod. I've considered what it would take to light it, and although it's possible, I'm no electrical whiz. I think I'll save myself the trouble and just forget the lighting.

gary bolt
09-26-2004, 01:06 AM
John, your proposed use of aluminium and blue plexi tubing sound like it will have plenty of depth and light. Trying to duplicate a special effect from a movie with electric lighting could easily look contrived or cheesy. I vote for low tech.

Maija
09-26-2004, 10:44 AM
Whoa Nelly! The face is pretty close to dead-on pre-car-accident Mark Hamill.

As for the light sabre, maybe you could leave a channel hidden in his arm in case you ever did find a suitable lighting fix. I'm thinking of an LED and a piece of side-glow fiber optic cable inside a clear tube, but I don't know enough about fiber optics to know exactly what that might look like. I may be involved in an artistic application of fiber optics in the near future, so I could let you know if any solutions turn up. In the meantime, I would go with the low-tech solution, since fiddling around with something electronic could be a lot of expensive trial-and-error trying to get a good look.

Wow... no updates from me since September! My resolution for 2005 is to be more productive, so I thought I'd post some updates.

All Sculpey. I've never tried Aves. Is it similar to Magic Sculpt?

I recommended to Ron that he cast the portrait in resin before attaching to an action figure body. I can just picture the Sculpey head shattering after a fall, I've seen it happen enough times!

JT, both of your new sculptures are excellent. You always reply to compliments most humbly but I hope you appreciate the exceptional talent you have. The Ron Boyd looks very realistic and fine and the Betty piece should be awesome. How do you plan to do the hair?

JohnThompson
01-04-2005, 08:44 AM
How do you plan to do the hair?
I sculpted her head months ago, originally planning on casting it for use on a 12" articulated figure body. I left the head bald hoping I could find a doll wig that would work. I never found one.

So, now she's going to be a bust instead. The hair will be sculpted on first by blocking out the hair mass with Sculpey, then using pointed tools to engrave or "rake" lines into the soft clay to give the impression of hair strands. When I'm satisfied with how that looks, I'll brush over the surface with a soft-bristled brush dipped in Sculpey Clay Softener to smooth out the roughness.

Thanks for the compliments, I do appreciate them. If I appear humble its mostly because I can't seem to make any money from my work, so it must not be all that good!;)

Unfortunately the link between quality and income in art is tenuous at best. The glass art world is full of fabulously talented people scraping by and less talented people raking in the dough (I'm generalizing). Financial success does have as much to do with marketing, promotion, and luck as it does with talent. Morna and I are considered successful by our glass art peers but all our friends and family with "real jobs" make more money than we do. We usually are content that we love what we do for a living and aren't dependent on the whims of an employer but some days the grapes taste sour.

Thanks for sharing your plans for finishing Betty. I'm sure I'm not the only person on the board who appreciates the info you share.

This is another illustration I did for a book of Aesop's Fables, "The Bee and Jupiter", done with pastel.

All of the animals go to Olympus to pay tribute to the gods. The bees bring Jupiter their honey, and the god is so impressed that he grants the bees any one request. The queen bee asks for stings, so the hive can protect themselves from all who would steal their honey in the future. Jupiter, angry at their selfishness, obliges with an additional gift: the use of the sting will result in the death of the bee that uses it.

Thanks for the kind words, Tad and Maija. I've been working with pastel off and on for a decade, and I really enjoy it. More than any other medium I feel free to experiment with color and stylized anatomy when I'm working in pastel.

Here's another pastel, done at least a year before I met my wife Dawn. In the dress creases starting within the middle section of the skirt, you can make out the letters "D-A-W-N". Freaky.

I usually use pastels on cream colored Stonehenge printmaking paper, since its archival and has a good tooth. The Jupiter was done on white Crescent illustration board, over an oil wash underpainting. I work dark to light though, so you'd think I'd wise up and use a dark paper, wouldn't you?

Ask and ye shall receive! These are two pieces in progress for oil paintings. You get a real glimpse into my working methods with these... they're sloppy as hell. I wanted to try working in a looser style, so both of these are experiments, just like the oil I did for this past holiday art exchange. I'll post more on these later.

As far as SDCC, I'd love to, but I can't imagine having enough free cash to make the trip this year. Pants.

Thanks, Robert. I really think that having sculpted Hellboy has been the most help. Something about staring at Mignola drawings for hours and translating those proportions to clay, then being able to view the sculpture from all angles has really burned his face into my brain.

Just for you, David. I'll consider it. ;)

Last con I went to was Minnesota's Fallcon in 2001, as a guest (was doing some work for Image's "Big Bang" comics at the time). Earlier that year I was a guest at the annual Superman Celebration in Metropolis, IL. Here's a
link (http://www.supermancollectors.com/johnthompson.html) about that appearance, along with some samples of my Big Bang work.

I love to go to conventions, but they are so expensive. Even when I'm selling prints of my work and drawing sketches, I barely pay for the trips. Maybe I should have a sketchbook printed, do those sell well?

Petersen

I would love to create a sketchbook for the purposes of trading since my biggest outlay last year was purchasing sketchbooks. But I doubt I'll get my act together. But we'll see.

To quote Tad ^ It looks like Sketchbooks do very well.

Hi all,
this is my first message in this forum!...
:)

I just wanted to thank J.T. and others for very inspirational pictures, photos and sculptures! I just couldn't help myself... and now I'm in the process of making my own Mignola-style Hellboy bust (heavily inspired not only by M.M. but also by John Thompson's statue). I have some photos of the tools and process and I hope to post some of them. But there is another thread for those pictures, although my sculpture is not made from Sculpey :) - it's from German-made Cernit...

I just spent a good chunk of time looking at those sites and all I can say is... WOW! You, sir, have buckets of talent. It amazes me that you have created so many succesful drawings, but I'm even more impressed that you explore so many styles and techniques with such consistantly fine results. I've seen many of these before but it was a treat to see so see them all at once.

Welcome, Ivar! I'm honored that you chose this thread for your first post on the forum. I had no idea my influence was felt all the way to Estonia!:D Yes, I will ride Mignola's coattails around the WORLD!!! Mwahahahaha!

I look forward to seeing your sculpture. As you've probably found out, the "Sculpey" thread is good for showing sculptures of any medium. Cernit definitely qualifies!

Thanks Gary! As far as the variety of styles go, its something I've had to do to keep busy as a commercial artist. The more styles I can work in, the more jobs I can potentially bring in.

In my personal projects I like to mix it up to keep it interesting. Every time I see a new style that I like, I want to try it myself.

Thank you, sir! I had to play with the contrast of the scan a lot to get the faint pencil lines to show up, so you're not seeing a true facsimile of the art. This is just some underpainting, and color will be added over this.

I don't know much about your area John. What types of clients do you get wanting illustration in Ads? are they Iowa based? or is your place nationaly recognized?
The agency I work for used to have a large staff of illustrators, with a support staff of art reps around the country to show our work around in some big market cities. This was when the company was more of a graphic design house. As the computer boom hit advertisers in the early 90's, our design staff started growing, while the illustration staff began falling away. Now, we are a full-fledged advertising agency, so we are in direct competition with those same agencies that our art reps used to get work from. We now only have an outside rep in the Minneapolis market.

So, we were nationally recognized at one time, but most of our current clients are in Iowa, Minneapolis, and parts of Illinois that our in-house Account Execs can reach via road trip.

and no fair putting up a big 'ol splash of Emporer Zombie with no more progress shots or info!
Hey, be thankful you got even that! Besides, he should be finished around the time of SDCC, so you will see more shots then. :)

Holy crap thats awesome!

Speaking of wartime vigilantes who slay would be Nazi's...... has anyone else picked up a new mini-series by Image called Iron Cross? It only just came out. I picked it up as the artwork looked interesting as well as the story. Long in the short of it, there is a vigilante running rampant throughout the streets of Germany during the end of the war, slaying Nazi servicemen with some yet unknown agenda. Seems intriguing, though the comparisons to Lobster Johnson are high (pulp hero/anti-hero look). Anyhow, seems promising!

Can it be that you are unaware of the excellent Rocketeer comics by Dave Stevens that inspired the movie...?

In the comics, Stevens used 50's pinup model Bettie Page as Cliff Secord's girlfriend. At the time, the real Bettie's whereabouts were unknown and she was largely forgotten. Attention generated by the comics renewed interest in her career, to the point that she is now a cult icon.

Anyway, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Dave Stevens for re-introducing Bettie Page to the world, and that was my inspiration for the drawing. :)

Always wanted to read the comics but never tracked them down.
I never read the individual comics back when they were originally published (there were no comic shops in my town that I knew of at that time), but I picked up the collected trade when it became available. Great stuff, a mix of old sci-fi serial rocketmen, nazis, and G-men, and then of course there was Bettie Page. :)

Interestingly enough, I went to the comic shop today looking for the latest DH Book of _____, and in a bargain box found an original issue 2 of the Rocketeer story. If they'd had the whole series, I would have bought them all and sent them to you.

The colour is really vivid! The style reminds me of an early 20th century cinema poster. Once again I'm impressed by your technical skill. Watercolours are tricky, acrylics are tricky, and here you go painting with one as if it was the other. Is this a work-up to an airbrushed piece?

Nope, just a time-killer while I was between assignments at work. I was thinking about doing this in oil, but decided to try something a little more spontaneous. I need to get a set of guache colors, I haven't painted with them in years.

Thanks for the kind words!

This is my first real commissioned sculpture (!) -- somebody wants to actually pay real money for my stuff! This is a replacement head (another sculptor did the body) of Burt Ward as Robin from the 60's Batman TV show, to be released as a resin model kit from Burt Ward's website. There will be a masked version of the head included with the kit; I will sculpt the mask onto a resin cast of the head after the original is approved by the client.

Gray Super Sculpey, 1/6 scale.

Thanks David! The secret is to take digital photos of your work at the same angle as your reference photos, then put them side-by-side in Photoshop. You will see instantly what needs to be changed. Just looking at the sculpture in my hand and back to the reference photo is misleading in something this small.

Another big help is that I recently bought some clay shapers (some art stores sell them as "paint erasers"). These rubber-tipped tools are so good at getting a smooth surface, you will hardly need to brush with alcohol or clay softener. I love these things!

But that Burt head is amazing and inspiring, as usual. Congratulations on finally getting some of the kind of recognition you deserve! May there be plenty more in the future.

Those clay shapers look like awesome tools. I've phoned around and only one place in town has them and they're way out in an industrial park, naturally. They've warned me they've got a limited range in stock right now but can order other sizes. Are there shapes/sizes you find especially useful? I think we work at the same scale (though I'm getting all the way down to HO railway scale!) Thanks John.

Despite the picture I posted, I only own one of these. It has rubber tips on both ends, but really the only end I use is the "tapered chisel", the tip is approx. 1/4" in diameter.

I can work the point into really delicate undercuts like eyelids, and I lay the tool on its side to smooth flatter areas like a squeegee. The advantage of this kind of tool is its flexibility; unlike a hard metal tool, if my hand twitches I won't necessarily destroy the fine detail.

Free comics? That's great, I hadn't heard about that before now. You don't need earrings to get attention from guys, though. ;) The turnip shirt sounds like an excellent idea, I may have to make one up for your next con!

Thank you, guys. This next one is a collaboration with my wife Dawn: I painted the linework, and she built the window. This was a gift for a friend of Dawn's on an online artists' group-- the recipient has done a series of paintings depicting Superman and Lois Lane as metaphors for her husband and herself.

Stained glass and lead came, approx. 14" x 20"

The Gollum illo is great-- I like that you chose to portray his sorrow at losing The One Ring (or maybe just sorrow at living underground and eating fishes and orcses).

But that window is FANTASTIC! The Best Comic Book Shop In The World or maybe a fine Museum of Comic Art would have all their windows by Dawn Lee and John Thompson. The glass Dawn chose and the way she laid the grain of it for Superman's suit is wonderful.

I thought it was probably time to dust off this old thread and post something new. There haven't been many spectacular jobs that have crossed my desk these past several months, but I did like this one, used as a brochure cover and poster for a new Dan Gable museum of wrestling. The guy pictured is Mr. Gable himself; Iowan, Olympic gold medal winner, and later head coach of the wrestling team for the U of Iowa (now retired).

That's lovely, John. I love the way you posterized it and the retro colours. It would make a stunning screen-printed poster (maybe when the museum has some money!)
