Written by Gail Simone; Art by John Byrne and Trevor Scott; Cover by Ariel Olivetti

The startling adventures of the new Atom begin in this series based on concepts developed by comics superstar Grant Morrison, written by Gail Simone (VILLAINS UNITED) with art by John Byrne (ACTION COMICS) and Trevor Scott (THE AUTHORITY) and gorgeous covers by Ariel Olivetti (SPACE GHOST)!

Strange things have been happening in Ivy Town since Ray Palmer disappeared. In fact, it appears that the the whole town's been experimented on for decades. Enter Ryan Choi — the young hotshot professor who's filling the empty slot on Ivy University's teaching staff... and who inadvertently ends up filling the old Atom's super-heroic shoes!

Can Choi make a difference in a town more creepy and mysterious than anyone ever realized? And can he live up to the towering legend of his predecessor?

I'm glad they're keeping the "Atom as College Professor" angle even with the new Atom.

It was one of the things that made the Atom unique and I think it will make a new Atom easier for old fans to take.

Now... Y'Know what would make this really cool?

If Grant Emerson was a student/occasional ally at Ivy University. He's the right age and I think it would show his life getting back on track some after all the stuff he went through in Grayson's TITANS and INFINITE CRISIS.

He could be a part time super-hero, it would tie together the various Atoms and, bringing him home somewhat to the "Atomic Family", he could have a really unique role in relationship to the lead member of the "Atomic Family" when compared with Robin, Supergirl, etc.

Plus... Uhm... I really like saying "Atomic Family" as a play on "Nuclear Family" and it would be cool to see Grant as the fresh, young member of the Atom corner of the DCU, which might get him into the Teen Titans. Also, since Grant's dad was a college STUDENT when he was the Atom, you'd have Ray's heir as professor and Al's heir as student. It's also nifty role reversal for Ray's successor to teach Al's successor.

And... well, I think Atom Smasher may occupy a darker place in the DCU so it'd be nice to see a bright spot connected to past Atoms.

And dagnabbit, I just think it would signify the Atom coming into his own as a DCU property to see the various Atom characters form a "Family", the way Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and the Flash have.

And the nifty thing is that unlike any of the above groupings, all of the Atom-related characters are fairly unique in terms of powers.

The Rogue's Gallery already has Jean Loring/Eclipso and Chronos... And it sounds like Gail's run will be fairly fresh, introducing NEW characters and settings.

So, really, if in the second year or so, we start seeing hints of Ray Palmer, Grant Emerson, Al Rothstein, etc. and maybe some kind of female Atom-type with Ryan Choi as the nucleus of the Atomic Family, I'll be ecstatic.

You better hope they weren't just about to do that, because they'd have to change their plans now.

Or maybe they will do it...

Either way, I hope Gail doesn't read this and go "Shit! That's heaps better than I what I had planned".

Because that would suck.

(I haven't said 'suck/s' on a message board for ages. Good Times!).

The Atom?

I was expecting Gail to be put on Wonder Woman or something.

When she was announced as the new Atom writer I was a bit disappointed at first.

After reading what I have about the series and having a lot of faith in Gail, I reckon the book will actually be good, even if it takes a couple of months to start up.

Nice hair.

No really, it makes the costume work for me.

Clearly part of Ryan's character is that he has no style.

Looking forward to this, really I am

Ryan Choi? Any relation to Grace from the Outsiders?

Ryan Choi? Any relation to Grace from the Outsiders?

Yes, because this is comic books, where anyone with the same last name must be related.

I always hated that.

That would be nothing less than awesome. I don't care if Gail had something similar or wholly different than this planned. She must do this now.

I still wish it was Atom Smasher under the mask. instead of Namor.

What do you mean that's not Namor, look at the hair! ;)

And it seems they still haven't fixed the costume, though he did say it'd be an evolutionary process...

Hey, if Sandman and the Green Goblin can be related because they both have Nixon hair...

I can't wait until the big reveal when we learn that Nixon was behind Jackalgate.

Coming soon to a comic shop near you. Mark Millar. Bryan Hitch. BUY IT.

So apparently the new Atom is just like a magical girl. The middle stage of his transformation to his superhero identity has him naked! (S'true, look at that promo picture.)

What are the odds Gail gets a joke out of that?

Recently I've come to think that John Byrne is two parts lunatic and three parts marvelous draftsman, so I'll be happy to pick it up.

Alan Moore is insane, too.

Have to love the phrase "Towering Legend".

And I think the word insane should be reserved for people like Dave Sim.

Byrne is just stupid, not crazy.
