I'm on the fence about whether I'm going to stick with this game or not. At the moment, I'm not sure that it's worth the $15/month to me. I think I need to get into some more consistent grouping situations soon.

That said, anybody else have to face Dr. Vahzilok on a mission yet? He's pretty scary; only a level 14, but he's an archvillain who hits for -162 a pop, and all of my attack moves in conjunction barely harmed him at all. I think I'm going to need the entire combined power of Crime's Best Remedy to take him on, assuming that there's even enough firepower on the roster to take him down yet-- he's THAT tough.

Flight is just awesome. My first mission after getting that power was something in Faultline, and cruising over all the destruction was just too cool. Got that "hero shows up too late to save city" vibe.

Anyone shooting for flight, my advice would be to quickly invest in a few high level Endurance Cost Reduction enhancements and combine them. Flight, while fun, is a big Endurance sucker.

I took leaping at 8th level, but haven't figured out how to use it. I love Jump Kick. It's fun, fast, and does knockback like a shotgun. Slash sucks, because it's slow and an endurance hog, but I'll need it at higher levels, because it does much damage and hits well after Slice softens up their Armor Class/Physical Defenses. :) :D :cool:

At level 8, you can only have Hurdle or Combat Leaping, not Super-Jumping. Toggle on Combat Leaping and you can jump extra far, but not superhumanly so. I suspect, with Hurdle, you'll get even further. Hurdle is always on.

You can get Super-Jumping at 14.

Aaargh! UPS is driving me crazy. My copy was delivered to Richmond yesterday (a fairly short distance away from me) and (based on the tracking) has been sitting in their facility all day. That is one zone where super speed is more of hiderance than a help.

I really wish they would add a horizontal feature to Super Speed like running up walls or something.

In the major update that is coming in the first week of June, there will be tailors added to the game. For a price of influence, you can make small alterations to your current costume.

There is a Bow set for Blasters and a Spear set for scrappers that I heard was in the game during beta but was later taken out. Those might show up in the big update or maybe not.

I haven't heard about the stretching powers, but I know they want to continue adding new power sets and even a new archetype before the City of Villains expansion comes out next year. I love that this is already a great game that continues to get better as it goes along.

I hope some of the things in City of Villians will be added to City of Heroes. One thing I have been mentioning is the ability to make a Supergroup HQ or your own HQ. You could get anything form a mansion to a dark cave to a space ship.

Alter Ego mode would be cool also. Especially for the whole roleplay type of thing, you could get out of costume and basically be a normal citizen. The heroes wouldn't really even be able to tell that you are a hero unless you do something out of the norm. This would also add to the roleplay thing.

Another thing I think they should add is something similar to contacts but more sort of like friendships. Either becoming friends with real people or computer ones. If you save them over and over again they will help you out. You can even fall in love with someone which would inturn cause more harm to that person like in real comic books. Just something to make it feel more like a comic book.

Multiple costumes would be cool too and I am not just talking about SG. Some people say they reach a certain point in a story and something happens. Maybe someone they love dies. This causes them to go into a darker path or something. New costume or something.

These are great ideas. I would also like to see some more characterization added similar to a real RPG like Champions. I would like to see psychological disadvantages added and am thinking about giving one of my characters one like won't fight with or against Dark Powers for example.

I spend much time creating and experimenting with new characters and was very happy to discover last night that some Tanks have sprint. I'm lookin forward to improvements in the game, because I only enjoy playin Scrappers and Tanks, and except for Katana, Martial Arts, and Super Strength I feel all the other attacks are extremely lame for either speed or visual reasons.

I downloaded the software you guys recommended on the old board, and realize I should do "save as" a JPG file, but can't figure out how to use it. How can you use it in the game when the game occupies the entire screen? :confused: It would really mean very much to me if someone could please lay it out for me step by step so I can share my character's costumes, especially since I'm a late night player and have not been able to hook up with any CBRers yet. I ADORE my scrapper, and have three of them total.

Grendel is a magic scrapper with dark melee and regen.

I know what you mean about ranged attacks, but my biggest problem is chasing down folks who are fleeing battle. Ugh.

For attacking without getting blasted to smithereens, I do several things, where possible:

1) I check out what each of the targets is before I attack. If I can find a group without ranged attackers at all, that's my top priority. Barring that, I take on the most dangerous ranged attackers first. (So, for instance, Nacht Fire, then Nacht Force, then Nacht Rocket and Nacht Grenade guys with the Fifth Column.)

2) I charge with a target pre-selected and an attack preselected, which makes it fire the moment I'm in range. I also bought Kick with a pool power, since my Dark Melee doesn't have anything that would prevent a ranged attacker from firing on me, and Kick has a slight chance of causing a knockdown on those gunners.

3) The AI in CoH isn't perfect, but it does rely on line of sight. I move the mouse around (in 3rd person) so I can sneak up on enemies without them spotting me. Dropping onto them from above, or rounding a corner suddenly gives them very little time to fire on you.

Obviously, this doesn't work everywhere -- Perez Park is a nightmare for scrappers -- but I find it works extremely well in urban areas and especially door missions.

You are quicker than they are, and want to hit them as quickly and as often as possible, not just to down them, but also to interrupt their attacks. I only attack with Brawl and Slice. Brawl doesn't do much damage, but it's very quick and interrupts their attacks. After you take down the first guy, double click on Brawl. This will target and punch the next attacker, then quickly click on Slice for a quick combination. Look around corners very slowly, especially in alleys. If you see trouble around a corner or any physical object, stop, make them come to you while you're loading up attacks, limiting the number who can attack you and eliminating being attacked on 2 sides at once. Try to get in a good rhythm with your combinations, just like boxing, and you'll do well. Also, some of the Hellion machine gunners and shotguns are 5th or 6th level, hit well, are hard to hit, and take much damage to bring down. Wait until you're 6th level, then attack them.

When you hit 2nd and 4th levels, don't take Hack, because it's slow (for a "fast" attack) and an endurance hog. Take Focused Senses and Agility which makes it harder for ranged attacks to hit you. Also, (except for Agility which needs Defense Buff and Health which needs Healing), only use and buy +5, +10, and +15 Endurance Reductions (not the Rate Reductions), because you don't have much endurance and it doesn't regenerate quickly. Sell everything else. At 6th level take Combat Jump, so you can keep up with the bad guys. Then at 8th level, finally take Hack, so you can do more damage to bigger guys. Never take any moderate speed attack, because it's just too slow for our type of defenses.

I play 2 martial arts scrappers and at 5th level each of them only died 6 times, because I played stupidly and didn't follow my own advice. Good luck and I'd love for Ronin9 to hook up with you. I'm on every night after 9 PM PST. :cool:

So, I log in last Thursday, for the first time in about a week, and I look at the SuperGroup and nobody is on. So I play around for a bit and then I notice, hey I got an extra diamond thingy on my character's name. So I mouse over and....What? I'm SG leader? How'd that happen?

Anyway, what's the normal times you guys play? I've run into Quickstep once and Conn Seanery once as well.

I'd guess that the original leader quit, and it passed to the next on the list (similar to what happens on teams when the leader drops out). That, or they just decided to make you the leader somehow.

I don't blame anyone for having anything else to do, but yeah, there's a definite lack of activity (at least when i'm playing) on the Victory server. If anyone ever wants to team-up when i'm online, just send me a tell. If i'm on, it's usually sometime between 7PM and midnight. Conn's a lvl 14 Controller, at the moment.

I'm having a blast. After almost 8 days of waiting for my mexican store to sell them, Joe Grendel pointed me into the right direction and I subscribed and downloaded.it. Damn, I don't sleep much, but who needs it?

I got 3 characters on the Guardian server.

Guapo Mendez, a level 14 mutant dark-dark defender, with Fly. It rules.
SCWhite Knight, a level 2 technological scrapper with a broadsword (hasn't seen much action lately)
Mexican Eagle, a level 4 magical blaster with electrical powers.

All part of The Panthaeon and we kick butt daily. Well, except for last night when we had to do a timed mission where every step of the way were 8 to 10 level 13 5th columnists. I mean every-step-of-the-way. Our group was made up by a level 12 controller, two tankers (one 13, and her 12 sidekick)two blasters (13 and 11) and me. We got killed so bad, it was funny. I'm close to 2000 xp debt. I'll make them up tonight, though, because I want to get to level 13 and get some more enhancement slots for my powers.

I almost made level 12 this weekend. Kept having problems with this mission where I was supposed to kill a bunch of Circle of Thorns and retrieve a jewel. I did so and got no mission complete. I scoured the entire mission map, nothing left. I left, went back in, did it all over, same thing. It's really, really annoying.

But beyond that, all is going well in the game. I'll try and get on early in the evening to team up with you guys soon. Most of the time I'm playing between 4-9 in the morning.

What is the deal with Task Force Missions and why are they always down?

I didn't know they were down, per se. I did know that they're bugged, so that finishing them is dicey and the reward is missing.

It's supposed to be fixed in the patch, which I hope is coming very soon.

Because I intend to take my main guy into level 16 but only halfway or so, so that I don't miss out on the 1st Task Force mission. The way I understand it, you can't do the first one past level 16, but I could be wrong, or mis-informed.

What I DO know is; I have a couple of other characters that I can spend time on while Dredd is down, and I can always drag him back to help someone out and if he gets close, just suicide him. Good influence, anyway.

Has anyone else gotten a mission thaqt gives you temporary powers? I just started getting them last week. I absolutely love them! It gave me temporary ranged powers for my scrappers. After I completed the mission I got it for, I was able to keep the power for awhile and I just had fun with it. I was able to complete a hard mission pretty easily just by having a ranged power.

Man, I love this game.

Yeah one mission pissed me off, i died 2 times in one day and I havn't died in a while. The first one was a fluke when a CoT High Level Boss blew himself up infront of me. Not the normal boss, this guy looked different.

The second was a mission that I had but went with some people. I am a level 14 and they filled it with level 16's. I accuentally hit the "r" button and ran into my death.

I just played Demo Crown halfway to 4th level and I love him so much I deleted Qui Chang Caine and Samson1 to create more time for him. A Samurai, an Egyptian Ankh Mage, and a War Mace wielding Democratic Knight! What more could I ask for? :rolleyes:

Seriously though, I've got the newbie character creation thing out of my blood and am really comfortable with these 3. I'm gonna play Demo Crown up to 6th lvl (CBR posters can always check my sig before logging on to see who I'm currently playin) and then Ankh Mage up to 14th lvl, because I've got plans for him. :evilsmile :evilsmile :evilsmile

P.S. I went through this thread and deleted all the attachments to my deleted characters for everyone's greater convenience.

The scrapper's been having a hard time, too. Usually takes a lot of damage before he can get close enough to give some back.
Take a page from Batman or Spidey, comics' two top scrappers: Don't let them see you coming. Attack from over the tops of roofs, attack from around corners, get Sneak at level 6 if you need to, etc.

Door missions are filled with all those great things to climb on for just that reason: You too can leap down from above on a group of thugs inside an abandoned warehouse. :D

The pink hands are from an energy power that gives you a knockback punch, Tadhg. You get a new title at 25 and see a lot less human enemies, including elementals and ghosts at higher levels, and even aliens.

Macul, I bet money the guy you're told to talk to is the coroner outside the hospital, not an NPC inside it. Re-read your mission information and check your map.

I created the second 4' foot tall character who has Regeneration. I also like my Vulcan Porcupine with Spines and Regeneration, because of the poison and the Regen the longer the fight goes the stronger he gets and the weaker you get. He's my anti-hero. You could do the same thing with Dark Powers, but I hate the visuals. :cool:

I might not be continuing with this game. The crashes have gotten way too ridiculous. My System is well above the requirements and a bit below the reccomended in some areas. I have an ATI 9200 instead of the 9600.

Has anyone else had this problem? It really started getting worse for me since the last update. It is at the point where I log on, the game freezes right up and I get the dump report.

My next billing cycle is on the 10th of June. If I can't get this cleared up, I am leaving the City of Heroes.

hhmm...ya know...I'm right there with you. LITERALLY. I also have a radeon 9200. Other than this game I NEVER have system crashes. They have also gotten tremendously worse with the recent update as yours has. At this moment I can't even log in with my main character. He died and as I was zoning out of the hospital the game crashed. Now when I log in with him I just get a black screen for about ten seconds before the game crashes. Very frustrating.

I can live with an occasional crash. That is my tradeoff for not paying another $200 to upgrade my video card, but it played pretty good for me all month and then started acting up right after the last update.

Also, for the price I paid for the game and the $15 a month that they ask, I would think that they would support the game a little better. There is no toll-free tech support line, no live chat, the message board doesn't seem to be manned by any tech people and the e-mail that I sent didn't even get an auto-reply.

I really love this game, I have set everything else aside to play it lately, but if it aint gonna work, there are plenty of other games that do, ya know?

I have a brand new Dell 3.2 Ghz with a DVD Burner and DSL and it was crashing every time I logged in, then I updated NVidia (the link is in my sig) and no more problems.

Who says there aren't good names left. I'll never have a 7th level character again. I'll just keep training new ones up to 6 and doin the same missions over and over again so they can all get +5 Combat Jump. Argh! :( :confused: :o :eek:

I logged on today and didn't have any really problems. But I did notice that you have an ATI card, during beta, ATI cards seemed to have more problems than NVIDIA. Usually an updated driver is what's called for, but that may not be your problem. Usually if you let them know, a fix will be forthcoming in the form of a patch. But you have to let them know what the problem exactly is.

I don't think you can do that. If that was the case and with that many characters you could create, you could just pay for one account and have like 50 friends make heroes. I doubt the two heroes are on the same account. I think it is possible to create an additional CoH account under PlayNC but it would be another CoH account.

I haven't played COH so I'm just guessing, but on another MMORPG we had, we had two accounts, knew several others who did as well, for the purpose of being able to have multiple characters on at once (admittedly usually for buffing purposes) but we were able to do it on one computer.. .can't remember how though.

Copy the program to multiple folders on your harddrive, and run multiple instances of them. You can do this in EverQuest and World of Warcraft. Haven't tried in CoH.

Also, just found this out about Test Servers. Basically they are used to test the new upcoming stuff. I havn't seen anything new though but here is how you do it.

1. Copy your CoH updater Shortcut.
2. Paste the Shortcut but rename it like "City of Heroes TEST SERVER".
3. Go to it's properties and look at the target where it has the directory.
4. At the very end of the tag line type in " -test". No quotes and there is a space before the dash. Put this after the quoted directery already there. So it would be like "C:/Cityofheroescrap/game/cohupdater.exe" -test

It will give you an update which might take a while. Also they have the teaser trailer to City of Villians up on the main COH website, looks pretty cool.

I've been doing some reading and it seems 90% of the crashing problems(Even those that didn't start until after an update) are fixed by updating the drivers. And remember with the Radeon's catalyst drivers, you have to unsinstall the previous version before installing the newer version or else you'll open yourself up to a whole slew of problems. I really like my All-In-Wonder card but the rigamarole you have to go through just to update drivers borders on the ludicrous.

I've got two questions. One, is there any way to cancel missions? I've got one that apparently requires me to be lvl 7. And I'm not.

Two, is there any way to get the camera to rotate in front of you? For badass screen shots mostly. I've got to get my characters up here. I came up with a couple decent ones.

No way to cancel missions. If you don't have any other contacts to get other missions from, your best bet is to just work until you get to level 7

I started a few new characters, but unlike John S. Osen, I didn't kill the old ones. John, does the "S" stand for "Slaughter"? :)

Anyway, I never have any luck with tells, so I quit doing them. I did see PurpleKnight1 run by me awhile ago before Osen killed him. I didn't know how to say hi to him at the time, I was too new.

I have a controller named Gold Bullion and a Defender named -O. When I get him to level 15 I am going to put Awesome in front of it just like Butter's robot.

My main character is still Doc Snow over in Victory. I've had a good many things keeping me busy lately (such as a burned out monitor). I'll be getting a new video card tomorrow, so I'll see what positive effects that has.

Doc Snow is a Level 13 Science Blaster.

I also have a Level 3 Magic Tanker over in Victory by the name of Winter King. One thing I've noticed about tankers are that it really stinks when the bad guys run away. The best strategy I've come up with is to select, choose follow & keep going 'till they turn and face me. I wish I could use melee attacks while moving.

Another option is to master the art of the chase. I think I've finally learned where to stop running after I queue an attack to actually hit the runner. Usually it's about 4-6' in front of him. Of course this does nothing for the jumpers or the ones that run up the fire escape.

Finally got COH yesterday.

Made my first guy a scrapper (Spines/Inv) and got him the level 5 doing a few missions.

The only downside is that I thought he looked cool in the character generation screen, but compared to everyone else in Paragon City he's a little plain! hehe!

Anyway I am very impressed so far. Not a lot of social interaction yet, but plenty of fighting so all is good :)

I wanted a character with Wolverine claws, so I created a character that I was going to name Scratch. She would have claws, regeneration and SUPER SPEED! Of course, that name was taken on every server. Same with The Scratch. Pfft...

Then last night at 1:14am, I came up with the perfect name.....THE SLASH! (Flash/Slash....Get it? Yay!) I got out of bed and desperately tried every server. This process woke up my husband, who I'm pretty sure hates me now, but it was all for nothing. I am a late clever name maker. TOO LATE.

I know, I know, no one thinks I can settle on 1 character, but I wanted to play Larry Da Ax Hen up to 6th level and with the help of some flash grenades he defeated a Bone Daddy and 5 6th level Deaths Heads by himself at 5th level and I celebrated by buying him 6 +10 Damage Resistances for only 660 apiece so he's the 1! I can't wait for 7th level. :) :D :cool:

It's all about the percentage increase. Depending on your build and archetype, you can see a couple points increase or virtually none. I have Blazing Aura and Damage increases don't appear to help much there, but that's because the numbers you see are the rounded numbers, not the actual damage. The damage you do is actually in floating point numbers, so if the Damage increase doesn't jump the rounding, you won't tend to see much difference in damage done, but it's there.

Definitely, Higher level bosses seem to have a resist against TP foe. I've never seen it work, though It may just be an accuracy thing. (I don't have it and not many people that I've grouped with have it either.)

Worth a shot, for sure. I haven't had the chance to use it in a situation where there were differing levels of foes yet.

I was thinking that it might work if you could use it from a vantage point that isn't easily accessible, say from a rooftop without fire escapes.

BTW, on the CoH website they have the first Features Trailer Vol. 1 which last under a minute but shows off the titans and I think a new zone. The titans are HUGE!!! I still think it is funny that there are two huge mechs and a someone fighting them but civilians are just walking around like nothing.

No. No you don't. There have been a lot of "breakouts" in a lot of different zones. I ran into some Rikti in Steel Canyon last week, for example. I'm not entirely sure why, but I think it has to do with the "ambush" phenomena of the game. Sometimes, when you're adhering to a particular storyline and you're hot on the trail, you'll accept a mission and the next thing you know, you're ambushed. By several of the types of enemies of the mission that you're about to undertake, at oor around your level.

My guess is that someone was in KR (helping a friend or on a door mission) and called a contact and accepted a mission against thes guys. Boom, high levels in KR.

I don't think Willie and the others actually went LOOKING for these guys.

I gave them wide berth, but forgot all about them and was running past them a bit later.

It took them about a second and a half to wipe me out.

Yeah, I just took a door mission in Steel Canyon. A timed door mission so when I accepted it I was on a 75 minute clock.

So I run by butt off to SC, from King's Row (I'm lvl 10 at the moment) and I see a bunch of green Trolls(well they conned purple), and I think to my self damn this is going to be a problem because the mission is .7 miles away from me. So I'm running trying to give wide berth to everybody and I'm getting hit by Clockworks, Trolls, Lost and something I didn't recognize but didn't try to stick around to figure it out. I burn through 8 of my 10 inspirations just making it to the door of the mission, Which I beat.

Now I'm stuck in Steel Canyon with only 1 inspiration left and another .7 miles to safety. I feel like I'm left alone in an ocean. It feels like one of those cliffhanger episodes where the hero, almost killed himself trying to beat the bad guys only to have a big reveal at the end of an even worse bad guy(s) waiting in the wings for our battered and nearly broken hero...Man this friggin' rocks.

Edit - it was actually Skyway City not Steel Canyon, though I ended up in Steel Canyon after I posted it. And I must say, definitely not for the solo lvl 10 hero.

I saw some lvl 16s in KR. I had a cool mission just before gettin Resist Elements. It was a building Hellion mission and I'd wiped out everyone, but the fiery leader Inferno. I took 8 potions right before the fight and we both fell at the same time, but I had rez so in my mind I won. I've gotta do my Perez Park missions and see what's there. I can't believe you don't have to be level 7 to go to Port Independence, because it's brutal. Except for the actual Mob guys in Port Independence (I love it when they beat on the Nazis), mobs is a very stupid word for gangs of villains like Hellions and Death Heads and I'll never use it. I've never been to Bauman. Is it a high level area and what's there? :confused: My sig contains a link to a picture of the character Dr EEG I'm gonna play up to high (20+) lvls. X-Ray is the coolest power I have played so far, although Dr EEG's Empathy powers are very powerful (I love watchin Psionic Lance curve around and hit it's runnin away target.) , and I like to use Force Field in between missions. :) :D :cool:
