Might as well get this started.
Mike,
Is the series going to come out on time or are there any projected delays you know about at this time.
Gotta have my LTB fix! By the way, I bought both covers for issue #1, something I never do!

I think the REAL question is.... when will Lions, Tigers & Bears make it on TV, it's the perfect animation gig, with a toy and comic tie-in. Just do us all a favor and don't fall off the face of the planet when Hollywood comes knocking... like the Danger Girl team did.
We want our LTB comics.

There are no projected delays that I know of at this point. Jack and I are both up to our eyeballs in other work, but LTB is on course to come out as planned. In fact, I think issue two went to the printer last week, not sure though.

I have a prototype for Ares sitting on my desk right now and as soon as we work out some of the things that need to be tweaked, it looks like we're going to go into production with him. If they sell fast enough, we should have enough money to make a set of all four with when we're done. :)

Well, Hollywood has already come knocking and the series was optioned for film long before volume II ever saw the light of day. First and foremost, this is a comic book series and Jack and I are comic book creators. Besides, Bomb Queen would make a much better video game. ;)

I admit, you gotta give it up to Liam Neeson in Chronic. That was badass.
But I want to know who would play Joey and Courtney. Hopefully they'd get REAL child actors and not these teens playing as kids.

The current plan is to create the movie in a similar fashion to Narnia, with all the animals done via CGI, but the parts of Joey, Courtney, Grandma, Abner etc will be played by real actors.
In fact, in the final battle scene (from Narnia) the Queen has a white tiger in her army that semi-resembles a certain member of the Night Pride, although the stripes are very wrong. (quite like Larsen with the fin on Savage Dragon, I'm a stickler for Ares' stripe pattern ;) )
I've actually spent some time trying to figure out who might do good voice-overs for the animals & Beasties, and while I have a few pegged, I still haven't come up with good matches for most of them. I'll refrain from saying who I'd like to hear in what role, as I'd prefer readers came up with their own ideas as to what Ares sounds like or who is best suited to voice Valthraax.
Besides, it's fun to hear who other people imagine they sound like. :)

Is the first TPB of LT&B still available? I had meant to read it when it first came out, due to several recommendation of how good it was... but I had to put it off. I noticed it came out in TPB form in Febuary, but it's Sold Out/Out of Stock and listed as Out of Print everywhere I've looked. :(

All of you playing along at home will notice that it's $2 more than the first printing, however, you should also notice that it has more pages. A lot more pages. So, check it out. If you already have a copy of the first printing, buy one of the new ones for a friend or family member. If you don't already have one of the first printings, here's your chance to get the whole story and then some. But make sure your friendly, neighborhood comic retailer knows you want it!

So far there are 6 issues out. The first volume of 4 issues (the 2nd printing of the volume I trade is in the newest previews in the Image section) came out monthly last year and the first two issues of volume II came out monthly this year until Jack had to step away. Paul is currently working day & night to get issues 3 & 4 done and in stores back to back, then volume III will come out monthly.

Mike, any idea what's happened to issues #3 and #4?
Sadly, Jack Lawrence had to leave the series back in the Spring and unfortunately, was unable to finish the current mini. It took me roughly two weeks to find a new artist, Paul "Gutz" Gutierrez, to take over. Luckily, Paul's style is similar enough to Jack's that it blends well without looking like he's ripping Jack's imagery.
The downside is that Paul only pencils & inks, so we had to find a colorist. We went through two before we found one who could actually get the job done and he just finished coloring issue 3 about 4 or 5 days ago. If all goes well, it'll arrive in stores in about 6 weeks.
Paul is currently working away on issue 4 and we hope to have that in stores some time in October/November.
I've already finished the plot for Volume III and Paul will plunge headlong into that as soon as he completes v2 #4. Expect to see a much darker story that what's been going on in Volumes I & II. We hope to have it arrive in stores next Spring, with Volume IV hot on it's heals.

Mike getting a lot of well deserved love!
Interesting how the discussion on Newsarama turned into a comic industry debate - that old axe of, "comics for kids in today's market?"
As you know Mike, I'm gearing up an all-ages book... but it saddens me when I see the reaction to all-ages books versus tits & ass books (like mine). It's like I what I said about AGE OF BRONZE. I just can't comprehend why it's not standard reading for everyone. It should be ordered... hell, just on principle. Just to be in stock.
It's like all-ages titles are just a novelty. It makes me mad, I tell you!
Mike how do you deal with it?
Mike Bullock
09-12-2006, 03:02 PM
Mike how do you deal with it?
About once every week or two I get an email from either a child or a parent telling me how LTB has enriched their lives. One guy told me after he returned from a 2-year tour of duty overseas, LTB helped him reconnect with his 3 year old son. Another parent told me how LTB helped their son learn how to read. Yet another emailed me to tell me after picking up LTB for their son he now can't get enough things to read and wants to read all the time. A woman emailed me and told me LTB was passed around her entire family and now they all have a comic book that they all enjoy together. I got an email just last night from a 4 year old girl telling me she was super excited about LTBv2 #3 and couldn't wait for it to come out.
Stuff like that so far outweighs the fact that LTB isn't breaking sales records that I actually don't even give it much thought.
That is, until you pointed it out.
Just kidding.

Damn skippy! [waves his copy in front of the monitor] SEE! SEE!
First off, what's up with that backcover, dude? I buy my books at the store, then open them up when I get home. I like a full surprise. I don't want to see 10 minutes of the movie, leave, then come back and watch the rest.
But those backcovers! Gives away too much info, [cry]
Anyway, nice flashback effect for the Polar Bear Guard. Old school comics style, haha! Also glad to see Orson back. I think I posted this before, but Orson with a stick/staff would rock. The sword is just evil. Orson is a badboy bear with a heart of gold, but he's no killer. He just looks more war-wise with a staff. And he'd have real contact swinging a staff than keeping it "safe" with a sword [smacking Beasties with the flat side of the blade].
The art change works. It still holds true to the style that Lions, Tigers & Bears has built. Hard to get his feel for backgrounds, yet... since most of this issue was pretty much in the cave, and setting up for a battle.
The writing however is horrible. hahah! They need to change that hack!
[runs out the room] I keed! I keed! Gold as usual, Mike.
Actually Courtney is warming up and I have to admit, I like her best when she's being the realist. It counters Joey's imagination. In fact, I wish she was more combative. You know the classic tough-on-the-outside routine, like Orson (perhaps that's why they're big time friends)
Technical comments:
(1) - Damn I love the ink on the cover. All black and it doesn't smudge? What mystery ink is this? At first I didn't want to touch it and leave my oily fingerprints. But as I handled it I saw it was like the monolith in Arthur C. Clarke's 2001. You just can't smear it.
(2) - Why is your book only 2.99? I wish I had such a deal.
(3) - No letters page? It's nice The Grove featured the winner, but where's the letters? And damn it must be nice to run ALL pages, even the back cover without ads (save the inside back cover). You really know how to negotiate, dontcha?
Okay.... get the next issue out and let the battle begin. Part of me wants to see all the Beasties laid out, but the romantic side of me wishes for a positive ending. Perhaps the beasties have a heart after all. If only there was a way to win friends rather than slay enemies. That's just the Disney side of me yappin'.
EDIT
Oh wait... Disney films killed the enemies, too? Never mind, wipe 'em all out! Burn that beastie flesh on the spikes of the city gate!

Chances are we won't solicit v3 until the entire series is completed so as to make sure it comes out in a timely manner. With that in mind, and taking Paul's health issues into account, I'd expect it to start coming out late in '07, if not early '08.
As for the movie, they're still laying the groundwork. Hollywood, it seems, moves even slower than Comicwood.

Lions, Tigers, and Bears Wins Angouleme Prize
For Kids Title
February 02, 2007
Image Comics' Lions, Tigers, and Bears, by Mike Bullock and Jack Lawrence, won the Angouleme Discovery Prize for readers from 7-8 at the Angouleme International Comics Festival in January. The Angouleme show is one of the largest comic conventions in the world.
The Image trade paperback edition was released in the U.S. in September; the book was originally published by Alias.
U.S. retailers have noted Lions, Tigers, and Bears as a great way to reach out to younger retailers.
Congratulations, Mr. Bullock!

Paul's health has taken a turn for the worse, which is heartbreaking. It seemed like he was finally getting everything under control, but his wife emailed me and told me he was not doing well, but they were hopeful he would improve soon.

The lineart for LTBv2 #4 is now completed. Bob Pedroza is coloring the final page today and Dave Lanphear will be furiously slinging letters all over the pages next week. After that, it's off to the printer and into your hands by way of the friendly neighborhood comic retailer.

I don't think I've ever heard of this Kevin Myers though -- what else has he done? Also, is he just on the covers or is he doing interior art as well?
Oh, and I still want Night Pride plushies!!!

Kevin's first published work was in the POPGUN v1 anthology from Image. Really neat stuff. I highly recommend picking up that book (and you can find some Tigerman in there as well, straight from LTBv1 #1).
The new interior artist is Michael Metcalf. You can get a sneak peak at what he's doing here. (http://www.imagecomics.com/messageboard/viewtopic.php?t=41180)

Michael is working on LTBv3 #3 right now and hopes to be done soon. Once he's done with #4, we'll be soliciting it. So, we're expecting an in-store date around December or January.
In the meantime, Secrets of the Seasons v1: The Gimoles is landing in comic shops tomorrow. Please let me know what you think once you've checked it out. :)

Wait until you see what he's doing on LTBv3. Currently, he has a handful of pages left to ink for issue #3, then it's on to the finale.
After that, we'll either revisit the SOTS world or go further into the Stuffed Animal Kingdom, we haven't decided which. I'm leaning towards having someone else work on Volume II of SOTS, but I do so love what Michael did with v1.

Hey Mike,
I know it has been a while since I last talked to you, but I was wondering....
I know you do the Phantom over at Moonstone. So I got to ask why don't you create a family based Phantom comic that centers around his family, like you do for the Lions Tigers and Bear mini series ?
Also if the reboot is suppose to be a few years after the last arc, does that mean that there is a new Phantom out there or is it the same one, and if so is the family going to play a minor role ?
Thanks for your time I hope to hear from you soon.
