Im new to this forum, and tbh ive been looking for a good Superhero forum to post on for awhile now.

Ive seen several people refer to the regular marvel universe as the 616 universe. (as opposed to the ultimate universe)

Is this an actual reference to Excalibur`s cross time caper where the prime universe (the universe with the origin of the Phoenix) gets numbered 616?

If so this is my kind of forum ^^

From the FAQ (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=1117):1. What does 616 mean?

616 is another name for the mainstream Marvel Universe created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and the rest of the Marvel Bullpen in the 1960s. It's a reference to an Alan Moore Captain Britain story, where every alternate reality had a designated number, and the MU's was 616. There's a good article on the topic at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth-616).

By the way, Alan Moore's CAPTAIN BRITAIN work is available in trade paperback form, and is a darn good read.
