Spider-Man has one of the best rogue's gallery in comics, certainly in the Marvel Universe. He's always been my favorite character overall, and I enjoy his villains a lot as well. I was just curious how many of you would rank his villains. Who would be your "Top 10" Spidey villains, according to popularity, what they've meant to the Spidey/Peter character overall, etc?

Here's my list, according to how much I like them:
1. Green Goblin -- better alive than dead
2. Morlun -- make me an action figure
3. Kingpin -- he's so fat...
4. Dock Ock -- paunchy sick geniuses are cool
5. Sandman -- i love green striped shirts
6. Mysterio -- the only villain that can use his costume to eat cereal
7. Rhino -- was my favorite from the 60s Spidey cartoon
8. Vulture -- always fun to see his dentures knocked loose
9. Electro -- insert AC/DC joke here
10. Venom -- only when accompanied by a good story!

1. Green Goblin (Harry) - He seemed to get under Peter's skin a lot more than Norman ever could. He rode around in public as the Green Goblin and followed Pete home. He kidnapped his own wife, kid and brother in law and subjected them to psychotic mental torture. He generally just liked to fuck with Pete a whole lot more than any other incarnation of the Green Goblin. Plus, he had the greatest death scene in a comic ever.
2. Green Goblin (Norman) - Norman is just a cool villian. While not as conflicted as Harry, he is twice as malicious. During Jenkin's stint on Peter Parker Spider-Man he did some fucked up things to Parker. Plus, he killed Peter's one true love. That's some bonus points right there.
Bored now, I'll do more later.

I have to disagree. Norman was a much more superior Goblin than Harry was. Norman's actions led to: (a) his discovering Peter's identity, the first Spider-Man rogue to do so, (b) the death of Gwen Stacy, Peter's first love, (c) the faking and later kidnapping of Aunt May, (d) the loss of Peter and Mary Jane's child, and (e) he slept with Gwen Stacy, creating two offspring who wanted Peter dead. Harry was just ticked that Peter killed his dad and became the Goblin when he was traumatized.

While I agree that Norman was the better Goblin due to the pure MALICE he possesses, I don't think Harry should be underestimated. Remember the robot parents thing? Not many people do, but that DESTROYED Peter. The man withdrew into a web cocoon for days and attempted to forsake his very humanity, referring to himself only as 'The Spider.' It almost broke up Peter’s marriage and lead to some real lows in his life. Very little has affected Peter so dramatically, usually when faced with tragedy he grieves than moves on, but this time he couldn’t do it and essentially gave up on himself. Who was behind that plot? It was an Osborn, but it sure wasn’t Norman.
Unless it’s been retconed when I wasn’t looking >__>
However Harry often gets a pass because most of Peter’s rage and anger is aimed not at him, but at Norman, he blames Norman for ruining Harry, he rarely blames Harry himself. Since I view Harry as a friend and supporting member of Peter’s life first and a villain secondly, he’s not on my list, but I do think his villainous actions deserve some credit for fucking with Peter’s mind so badly.
1. Norman Osborn. We all know why, I doubt I have to explain it.
2. Venom- Yes, he's this high on my list. Without Venom there is no Carnage and since Peter feels responsible for almost every murder committed by this pair there is no doubt in my mind that Venom deserves to be on this list. He's menacing, occasionally crafty and one of the more dangerous of the rogues. Knowing Peter's ID really adds to menace factor as well.
3. The Hobgoblin- Again, Peter feels responsible for the creation of the Hobgoblin, and between the three major Hobgoblins that's a lot to feel responsible for. Kingsley eluded the law for years, helped destroy Peter's good friend Betty's life and between him and Macendale managed to drive Harry Osborn once more to the brink. They (if could have been Leeds or Kingsley, and Macendale was obviously present) helped to escalate the gang war in New York that claimed many lives. Basically the Hobgoblins are what Norman Osborn would be like if they had a life outside of Peter Parker and Spider-Man, which in some ways makes them ultimately more dangerous to the citizenry.
4. Doc Ock- The guy is a powerhouse AND he's brilliant. He's also, in some ways a fairly well rounded character who is not entirely without a sympathetic side.
5. Kingpin. He may have made the jump to Daredevil, but I still remember him mostly as a Spidey foe, and a very bright and practical one who could hold his own in a conflict. He was really just a strong man, but he managed to control and use many of the meta humans in the area. Unlike the others he never personally terrorized Spider-Man, he's too smart for that, and would be content just to avoid him and go about his business.
You know what? Doing this list has reminded me that Spidey's rogues are kinda in a sorry state. Characters like Electro, who are potentially quite powerful, keep getting misused and re-written, so they never really portray much menace. I can't even get to ten *scratches head*

My top 10 list.
1.Green Goblin(Harry):Harry has many chances to turn into a much more deadly foe. Thanks God,most of Spidey-writers use Harry in good storylines and didn't turn him into a carbon of his father. The last appearences of Harry was a masterpiece and his death scene was execute so well that it is an example how to kill a classic character and cement his legacy to Spider-mythos
2.Green Goblin(Norman):Norman Osborn deserve to be the number one of my list.He was the first who learned that Peter Parker and Spiderman was once and the same,he killed Gwen Stacy leading to the end of Silver Era of comics and his presence torment Peter and Harry lives.I don't have a problem with his return to life(and really i was happy seeing old Normy to be the mastermind behind the clone mess...and that's was the only good part in the whole saga)but using him all the time, the Gathering of five storyline and putting him to have kids with Gwen makes me to put him in number two of my list.
3.Doc Ock:I always loved mad scientists and Ock was one of my favourites. His plots were cheesy but they were a good chance to see him fighting Spidey. All the battles between Spidey and Ock were classic.Definetely one of the best villains in Spidey's Gallery.
4.Hobgoblin(Kingsley):The original Hobgoblin was truly a badass villain. He was not crazy like Norman(something that makes Roderick more dangerous),he has other people to use as scapegoats and stand-in(Donovan and a brainwashed Leeds)and a longtime mystery about his secret identity. And he is one of my favourite villains.
5.Mysterio:A classic villain of Spiderman. He has a cool costume and great abilities(expert in special effects, master of illusions etc).Too bad he was killed in Daredevil stories.
6.Scorpion/Venom III:A worthy opponent of Spiderman. He deserve a spot.Knowing Peter's secrets and becoming the new Venom gives him many points to induct him to my list.
7.Chameleon:Current Chameleon was a joke right now(brother of Kraven, crazy and 90s crappy stories thst ruinned him)but from 60s-mid 80s Chameleon was a criminal mastermind. His powers and his plans force Spidey to use his mind insteed of raw power to beat him.
8.Vulture:Good aerial combats with Spidey and i always find interesting to see an old man with wings to steal jeweleries and banks :D
9.Shocker:When he's written good, is a worthy opponent for Spider-man.
10.Kraven because i loved the "last hunt" story.

1. Doc Ock - My favorite Villian of all time. I love his octopus arms, such a awesome power. He is a scientist gone mad, what could be better.
2. Green Goblin (Norman) - Complete nut case, but a smart one. Thats what I like about him, and his name.
3. Venom (Brock) - He is kinda like Spidey's evil twin I think.
4. Hobgoblin - I don't care which one, but the Hobgoblin is so badass.
5. The Vulture (Toomes) - He may be an old geser, but he is cool.

I'm pretty sure (d) no longer exists in current continuity, does it? I have no idea. You'll have to enlighten me.
Norman most definitely did kill Gwen Stacy and that did screw Peter up, but Harry inflicted more psychological damage on Peter without killing someone. Plus, Harry was Peter's best, and some may say only, friend. To have your best friend fucking with you, in the guise of the man who killed your girlfriend, has got to hurt. It seemed like Harry created more nefarious schemes to destroy Spider-Man as well. He slandered his name his name in the media without getting caught. (Actually, that might have been Norman. My memory is getting hazy.) He compromised his secret identity by following Peter on his glider almost every day. Where as Norman was only the Green Goblin some of the time, it seemed like Harry's every waking moment was dedicated to messing up Peter's life to the extent Harry thought Peter screwed up his.

Er, stepping in a bit, while the above may be true, Harry would never have been put in a situation where he would be psychologically weak enough to become the Goblin had it not been for Norman's influence over his life. Every act Harry committed was out of a desire to live up to Norman's standard. Plus, Harry never quite managed to really do anything. Yes, he tormented Peter a bit, but so has Venom, really. And Norman pulled a "slander via the media" bit as well - I think it was called 'SpiderHunt' or something equally forgettable, but the crux of it revolved around Norman releasing a video of Spidey beating Norman - in his penthouse, without the Goblin suit - quite brutally.
I'd go as far to say that the biggest "win" Harry ever managed was actually his own death. That was really the only something that deeply harmed Peter and had a lasting effect.
Besides, without the elder Osborn, Harry would probably have ended up a well-adjusted being. Not to mention that the death of MJ and Peter's baby is still in continuity - it was referenced during Mark Millar's MK run.
Anyway, my own personal list:
1. Norman Osborn - For many reasons listed in the thread.
2. Doctor Octopus
3. Harry Osborn
4. Hobgoblin
5. Venom
6. Electro
7. Scorpion
8. Mysterio
9. Sandman
10. Kingpin
BeastieRunner

6. Spot
5. Venom (Brock)
4. Green Goblin
3. Mysterio
2. Lizard
1. Electro
Top 10 in actual threat to Spidey order (IMO):
10. Kingpin (take him off Daredevil for awhile!!)
9. Shocker (When he's written well, he is a good opponent for Spidey)
8. Kraven (Last Hunt was fantastic)
7. Chameleon (When he's written well, he's the best mastermind)
6. Electro (When he's been done right, he's been awesome)
5. Venom Symbiote
4. Norman
3. Morlun
2. Lizard
1. Doc Ock

This was quick so it might be flawed but whatever.
1. Green goblin
2. Doctor Octupus
3. Venom
4. Kingpin
5. Electro
6. Sandman
7. Mysterio (He's not that great, it's just, when I was like 5 or something, I always pictured Mysterio when i thought of Spider-Man fighting a baddy)
8. Carnage
9. Kraven
10. Uh....
Venom
04-14-2006, 07:30 AM
1. Venom (Eddie Brock)- He's the dark, twisted, evil twin version of Spidey. He is what Spider-Man would've eventually become if he gave in to the Symbiote's dark desires. Venom knows most of Peter's intimate secrets and certainly knows how to strike him where it hurts from threatening Mary Jane to beating Peter within an inch of his life saying he'll make him suffer until he begs for death.
2. Carnage- His only goal in life is to break the world record for most people killed by one person. He has no emotion and only lives to bring suffering in anyone's life who encounters him. This is the true nightmare of a bloodthirsty alien Symbiote merged with a human who pretty much lost his sanity when he was a boy.
3. Green Goblin (Norman Osborn)- What can I say? The king of Spider-Man villians. This guy has done it all to try and screw Peter's life up as much as possible. Norman really knows how to test Peter to his limits. He killed Peter's first true love, he masterminded "The Clone Saga", he faked Aunt May's death, he's probably still got baby May, he's made Spidey the most hated and wanted man in New York at one point, he put Flash in hospital. Here's the one that tops it all off, he slept with Gwen and had her children. This evil genius has done it all and who knows what he'll do next to further mess with the web head's life.
4. Kaine- The example of why humans shouldn't play God. The original clone of Peter Parker and a tormented man that's slowly dying but dosen't know when his time's up. All his powers have evolved beyond Spidey's powers. His spider-sense has evolved to something that triggers him seeing future events. He's just a villian that is really misunderstood.
5. Hobgoblin (Roderick Kingsley)- The person Norman Osborn could've become if he hadn't gone insane. Kingsley has it all, money, power and superhuman strength. He is a clever mastermind and for years made everyone believe that so many other guys were the true Hobgoblin. Kingsley is definitly a character with true potential and with 8 years absence from Spider-Man comics think of all the new stories that writers can come up with to bring the Hobgoblin back to terrorize the wall-crawler's life.

My list is:
1. Green Goblin (Norman Osborn)
2 J. Jonah Jameson (toned down in the last couple of years but is responsible for a few of Spidermans villians)
3. Kingpin
4. Doctor Octopus
5. Electro (ever since his show of power in Marvel Knights)
6. Venom
7. Carnage
8. Hobgoblin
9. Scorpion (J. Jonah Jameson creation)
10. Spider-Slayer (this could also be considered Jameson or/and Spencer Smythe who created them but I still think the storyline that has Jameson and Spiderman handcuffed to a bomb as one of the best spider tales I've read)
Bullrog
04-15-2006, 02:56 PM
1. Kraven
2. Morbius
3. Doc Ock
4. Green Goblin (Norman)
5. Lizard
6. Hobgoblin (Macendale)
7. Electro
8. Rhino
9. Sandman
10. Venom (Brock)
Mister Mets
04-16-2006, 02:04 PM
1. Norman Osborn/ The Green Goblin- Espeically since his resurrection, he's become Spider-Man's archenemy.
2. Doctor Octopus- Probably still Spider-Man's best known enemy, and the one he's fought the most.
3. Venom (Mac Gargan)- Venom's great as the anti-Spider-Man. I love the way the symbiote twisted him, and think he's immensely scarier/ better motivated with Mac Gargan as the host.
4. J Jonah Jameson- He's single-handedly responsible for the public's low opinion of Spider-Man, and has had a tremendous impact upon the entire Marvel U.
5. Doctor Curt Connors/ The Lizard- He's got cool powers, and I love the fact that Curt Connors is one of Spider-Man's greatest allies when he's
not the Lizard.
6. Kingpin- While primarily a Daredevil enemy nowadays he's had some excellent Spider-Man tales, most notably "Spider-Man No More", Wolfman's last Spider-Man/ Kingpin fight, and the Ultimate Spider-Man battles.
7. The Hobgoblin- He's probably compelling because Roger Stern's first year worth of stories showed him steadily becoming a more dangerous foe.
8. Fusion- His powers aren't terribly original, but I love his motivations, viciousness, and the way he used his abilities.
9. Mysterio- Just because of his powers.
10. Sandman- Just because of his great powers.
Dark Soul # 7

1. Green Goblin(Norman): He´s done pretty much everything a villain can do to his arch-hero, certain things some wouldn´t believe. He started out as just another weird-looking bad guy with a costume gimmick who wanted to take over organised crime and show his power by defeating Spider-man. Later on he was revealed to be the father of Spidey´s best friend and he has developed an obsession with Spider-man. Because of that he has constructed grand schemes to destroy Spidey´s life over and over again.
The scarey thing about norman is that you don´t know what to expect from him or what his motive is. Does he want to torment, kill, test or mock Spider-man, or "proof" that he is supperior or is it all of the above.
And he probably knows Peter better than he knows himself.
2. Dr.Octopus: He´s kind-off a dark mirror version of Peter in origin and the science department. While Peter became a hero Otto became a power mad lunatic. He´s also caused some serious harm to Spidey and his family and friends. On is kill-list are Betty Brant´s brother and Captain Stacey for crying out loud.
3. Venom(Brock):He's the dark, twisted, evil twin version of Spidey. All true and well said. I would also like to add that Venom´s twisted sense of justice always made it seem like there was actually some hope of redemption for his crimes, which he saw as grand tasks.
These are the tree top spider-man villains IMO. After them the list can change at a seconds notice.

1) Doctor Octopus - I always enjoy a good doctor octopus story and like the visuals of the 4 metal arms. plus the aunt may relationship was gold.
2) Norman Osborn - done so much stuff to Spidey he deserves a high place in the list.
3) Mac Gargan - great as the scorpion espicailly in his origin story where he was essentially a better spider-man i kinda like him as the newest Venom espicially in NWTD.
4) Venom - good visuals, can match the spider-sense and is the best villain not created with the original batch.
5) Electro - i likes villains that are powerful and he definetly ticks that box was great in Mark Millers MK Spidey when he went all magneto on spidey's ass.
6) Kingpin - i liked the organized crime stuff in the essential volumes and great jokes in ultimate spiderman.
7) Sandman - spiderman beat him by hoovering, nuff said!
8) Morlun - a villain that could find spider-man anywhere and didnt tire thats such a good threat to spider-man.
9) Lizard - such a great villain, who's also one of spiderman's closest friend as Doc Connors.
10) Rhino - a simple villain but cool and fun, i've always wondered if rhino could impale spiderman with the rhino horn on his costume

1. Peter's Luck- The way that life keeps screwing him over is ultimately his worst enemy.
2. Green Goblin- Needs no further explanation.
3. J.Jonah Jameson- The worst part of his hatred is that he knows Spider-Man does'nt deserve it and actually feels some (private) remorse for the things he does against him.
4. Doc Ock- He can be best described as an evil Peter. A clever man who uses his knowledge and gifts to his own benefits. Also the way the arms can think for themselves is just creepy. It's like Peter's fighting five enemys.
5. Original Venom- An insane antihero with a burning hatred for Peter. Peter knows that Brock wants to be a good guy so he wants to help him, after he's stopped him from trying to kill him. Also the way Venom does'nt show up on Peter's spidersense means he can be around any corner.
6. Carnage- What happens when you give a psychopathic serial killer superpowers. You get a Spider-Man villain. He's the ultimate disastor zone for Peter, Carnage can lose interest in the fight and wade into the bystanders in an instant.
7. Black Cat- I love it when she's playing the bad guy. She confuses Spidey so much. She won't stop stealing so Spidey just turns a blind eye to the Cat's actions these days. He does'nt want the headache involved with taking her down, hell hath no fury like the Black Cat arrested. Ultimately by not taking her down everytime she steals something it's another victory over Spidey.
8. Original Kraven- Clever enough and deadly enough to turn Spidey's head completely upside down.
9. Rhino- Class 80, almost invulnerable. The scary thing is what the Rhino could do if he thought things through first. Spidey knows this and it scares him too.
10. Kingpin- This man represents one of Peter's worst nightmares, with great power comes no responsibility.
Honourable mentions- Vermin, Lizard, Scorpion.

1) Green Goblin. This guy changed the rules for bad guys forever. This was a villain who had TEETH. He hurt Spidey in a way no one else could, and forever stands at the head of the pack. No longer could villains get away with cackling madly and silly deathtraps. They had to EARN their place in a hero's rouge gallery.
2)Doctor Octopus. A great villain. Genius scientist, with a deadly apparatus that allowed him to go toe-to-toe with Spidey. Doc Ock was the one villain for the longest time that could challenge Spidey on his turf, and push our hero to the edge. Spidey needed to be on his A game to take down Doc.
3)Venom. Terrifying. I was AFRAID of Venom as a kid. He had the same sort of edge that the Green Goblin had but upped the ante by having the ability to block Spidey's extra sensory powers allowing him to strike anywhere at anytime. He was the scary monster under the bed, come to terrorize Spidey at his weakest moment.
4)Hobgoblin. A frightening reminder of a deadly fallen foe. With all of the Green Goblins' strengths and none of his weaknesses, Spidey once again had to rise to the challenge to take him down.
5)Carnage. A bizarre, blood red monstrosity that looked like a nightmare cross between Spider-Man and Venom. With all of Spidey and Venom's powers and then some, with none of Brock's feelings about fair play and the sanctity of life Carnage came across an an unstoppable force of nature.
6)Electro. An awesome elemental villain. Spidey's powers are enough to allow him to survive a fight with Electro but not to beat him. As with the best of the Spidey villains, it is the Peter Parker side that would think up a way to beat this guy rather than his spider powers.
7)Sandman. Another elemental powerhouse. Fisticuffs were never enough to take this bad guy down, forcing Spidey to out think rather than out fight his opponent.
8)Kraven. For the longest time, he was a C-list baddie. But in Kraven's Last Hunt, the Russian Huntsman brings the fight to Spidey like no other villain had before. The true tragedy is that Spider-Man never really beats him, he is simply the victim of Kraven's obsessive madness.
9)The Rhino. Big, grey, and mean. A good thing he isn't too bright or else he may be higher up on the list. Again, Spider-Man's strength and agility would not be enough to take him down and would have to rely on outthinking the grey brute.
10)The Vulture. Taking the the skies, the Vulture always had the high ground over Spider-Man. There is always an extra level of danger when Spidey takes on the Vulture, with the threat of plummeting to the earth below. People may joke about his age, but think of it this way: If he can go toe to toe with Spider-Man while in his seventies, think about how much more dangerous he would be if he was a younger man.

I've voted for the Jackal in my top ten and nobody else has.
Not much love for the Nutty Professor (Warren) I guess.:frown:
I wouldn't count the Jackal as a odd one because he was the main Spidervillain for quite some time and everyone knows the infamous clone saga. When i started looking through the lists in this topic i expected greatest hits in Spideys rogues gallery and this is what i got except the odd that seemed to be in each list i mean what is Fusion doing here?::biggrin:
1. Norman Osborn/ The Green Goblin
2. Doctor Octopus
3. Venom (Mac Gargan)
4. J Jonah Jameson
5. Doctor Curt Connors/ The Lizard
6. Kingpin
7. The Hobgoblin
8. Fusion
9. Mysterio
10. Sandman
This is also how i came up with my odd-only list earlier in this topic.

My list.
Before I started I decided to limit myself to one only one Goblin, so I didn't have half a dozen of them cluttering up the topic and making the whole thing look like a bad Dungeons and Dragons encounter.
10. Sandman.
9. Lizard
8. Kraven the Hunter
7. Carnage
6. Electro
5. Kingpin
4. Venom
3. Mysterio
2. Dr. Octopus
1. Green Goblin (Harry not Norman.)
near misses for the list
Rhino
Scorpion
The Swarm
Mister Mets

Because he's a nazi made out of bees. That's really all he needs.
Swarm's always been a personal favortie of mine every since I saw him waaaayyyyy way back on the old Spider-man and freinds cartoon.

Until recently, I believe his only appearances were way back in the old Peter Parker, Spectacular Spiderman series in the late 70's/early 80's. He was certainly memorable but I confess I never considered him classic ---tho it is hard to argue with your logic!!

He may be a Nazi comprised of Bees, but damn is his honey delicious. You can't taste hate, baby.
1. Green Goblin/Norman Osborn
2. Doctor Octopus
3. The Lizard
4. The Kingpin
5. Mac Gargon (as scorpion but I prefer him as Venom)
6. Eddie Brock(the original venom who may end up becoming a Zealot Anti Hero)
7. Mysterio
8. Sandman
9. Kraven the Hunter
10. Vulture
And my pick for favorite Post BND Villain is...
Mr. Negative. Here hoping we see much more from this two toned terror as Amazing continues.

He appeared a few times in the 90s; he was part of the Leathal Foes of Spider-man series and showed up as a villain in The Secret defenders. I also remember an appearance in Spider-man comic either during the late 90s or early 2000s.
