View Full Version : Trades for Soldiers...

Hey, everyone.

For those of you that don't know, I work for the Department of Defense, at US Southern Command, in Miami.

The Morale office here is putting together care packages for the soliders from Southcom that are currently serving in Iraq. They've asked for all sorts of things, including books and entertainment (DVDs, etc.).

So, with Augie's permission, I would like to see if anyone has trades/Graphic Novels - in GOOD condition - that they would like to send to me so I can get them to the soldiers.

We all talk about how we're running out of storage room - is there anything on your shelves that you're not particularly crazy about, or don't think you'll pick up again, that you think the soldiers might like? Anything goes - although I assume superhero type stuff might be more recognizable, I'd still like to get a good selection together that they can then exchange and pass around.

They certainly don't need to be mint, but just so long as they don't look like a small woodland creature nested on them. ;)

The one other small caveat is that they not be overtly...graphic. And by graphic I mean sexually graphic. Remember, these books are going to Muslim countries, and the last thing we need is a giant incident over an issue of something painted by Milo Manera. ;)

Please, everyone - regardless of your personal feelings on the war, the soldiers are still people who enjoy some good reading - maybe we can get a few new fans together!!

If anyone has something the might be able to send, please send me a PM or post here, and I'll get you my mailing address.

THANK YOU!!!

Patricia

I'm sorry, Patricia. I wanted to link to this post in the column this week and forgot to do it. I'll write a mental note to myself for next week, though, if it won't be too late. . .

Hey Patricia,

What's the deadline? I've got a few books that I enjoyed but will likely never open again. And, since my country didn't send any troops to Iraq, I have to show my support anyway possible.

If I've got a couple of weeks, let me know where to send them.

Cheers!

Hey this is my first forum reply,

But I am extremely interested in passing along some new tradepaperbacks to the soliders overseas.

Where should I send them Patricia? So that I make sure they wind up in the hands of some hungry comic fans?

We have a handful of trades I'd like to donate. Just let me know where and when to send them.

Are you specifically looking for trades? Because I have an armload of individual issues too...

Hey, I'm a comic book creator (see: http://www.comixpress.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=280) and I just placed a reorder for 25 more of my books, they should be here in about 8-10 days and I would like to send them to the troops.

Also, I have quite a few loose issues that I'm "done" with and could send.

Thanks,

Hey guys, thanks for the interest!

And giant thanks to Augie, for including it in the column.

I sent all of you PMs with my mailing address, so just let me know when you're sending stuff our way so I can keep an eye out at the leasing office.

Trip - got your package yesterday, THANKS!!!!

I wanted to post a public thanks to everyone who has sent materials.

I almost bawled when Chad's box of stuff showed up. :)

A good amount of stuff has shown up; some of them made it in to the last mailing, the next batch will go out soon.

Also, special props to Gemstone - they sent a box of 100 trades!!! :D

I actually *did* cry at that point.

Thanks guys, let's keep it coming.

PS: Those regular book-thingies, the ones with no pictures in them? Those are good too. ;)

Sorry,

What's a PM? I'm new at forums and I suspect it is abbreviated for something.

sorry to be such a square, I'm just anxious to send some good material to the soliders. :p

It's a Private Message. Look at the upper right corner of the screen. Under your name up there, you'll see a count of private messages you have unread.

Regular books are cool, too? And there's still time to send more stuff? Get out the tissues. :-)

Patricia,

E-mail your address to randyoni@onipress.com as we just got several cases of shelf-worn, but good condition bookstore returns and I think we could easily have a case or two of books for the cause.

Great - what is this about accepting normal books as well? Is there anything in particular you/they are looking for?
