Hi, Folks,

Tony Bedard here -- writer of EXILES, NEGATION, ROUTE 666, SPIDER-MAN: BREAKOUT, ROGUE, KISS KISS BANG BANG, and assorted other funnybooks.

This is my new home on the web where I hope to swap viewpoints with you about comics, entertainment, the world and pretty much anything that pops into your mind.

I want to thank Jonah and the many fine folks at Comic Book Resources for giving me this (virtual) space. I've been a daily visitor to CBR for a while now, and it's pretty much the best comics website out there, so I'll try not bring down property values around here.

Now, let the posts begin! Ask me whatever you want. Tell me whatever you want. I'll return the favor, and hopefully we'll have a lively exchange here until comics go the way of 8-track tapes!

You're Exiles Run has been great!
I'm glad you will be staying for a few more issues. The Wolverine Idea seems like it will be awesome!

Will all your extended stories be drawn by Paul Pelletier or will Jim Calafiore be drawing some of them?
You can't lose either way :)

Welcome to the CBR Land of Madness Tony Bedard!

Here's my hopefully easy to answer question.

If Crossgen hadn't gone down the tubes would you have stayed with Mystic? Did you have a lot of story plans that went for naught?

Gads I miss your Negation stories. And you we're doing pretty well on Rogue before they yanked the carpet out from under you.

Hey, Tony. Welcome to CBR.

I do have a question for you: What current book of yours would you recommend to a reader of your old CrossGen stuff?

Your Exiles run has been awesome, especially loved Namora. My question: When did you know Claremont was to be taking over Exiles? Some time part way through the beginning of World Tour?
Thanks

Welcome to CBR Tony. The only work of yours I've read is Spider-Man: Breakout and I enjoyed it. I like how you wrote the U-Foes and Crossfires crew motives and characters. I also like how you gave Spidey detective skills. I hope you get to do more Spider-Man projects.

Why exactly are you leaving Exiles?
Your run started off slow but after the AOA crossover kicked in, it became my favourite.

Wow! Nice response and lots of questions. Some of these questions probably deserve their own threads, but I'll just go ahead and try to deal with them here one by one.

SAMURAI: yes, Paul and I are doing more EXILES issues together. After I'm finally gone from EXILES I will use every dirty trick in the book to steal him back. I consider Paul one of my best friends and collaborating with him is a pleasure. He always delivers 150% of what I ask for in a script. I never have any doubts when I'm partnered with him.

DREAMER: Comics are pretty much my sole income. Luckily, I've had a good amount of work these past few years and so my wife and kid haven't gone hungry. I've also recently completed the screenplay for an animated feature which is in production and I'm starting on yet another one, so there's more to me than just comics. But comics are my first love.

MILHOUSE: you have the best avatar on the web! I knew Chris would come aboard EXILES back around the first of the year, so World Tour was already planned out. If I had it to do over again, I would probably have shortened World Tour, but I'm pretty happy with the results. We'll get back to more fresh alternate realities soon enough!

DON C: I'd recommend picking up EXILES, starting with issue #69 -- when my old NEGATION partner Paul pelletier came aboard. I would also GREATLY encourage you to pick up my new Image book RETRO ROCKET, which just launched last month!

DEATHSTROKE: my favorite thing about MYSTIC was my old art partners Brandon Peterson and Aaron Lopresti. As for Giselle herself, I ran out of stories to tell about her, to be honest. It happens sometimes.

ERIC SELLERS: I love it when someone actually posts under their name. My extended run on EXILES will be with both Pelletier and Calafiore, so I hope you'll enjoy both flavors.

And there ya have it.

Now let's start some more threads and really get this party started!

Were you ever given any clue as to what the resolution of the Negation War would've been and who was going to survive/die?

Hi Tony; another huge Negation and Route 666 fan here who misses those books dearly (as guys like Don and Deathstroke will tell you). Like Exiles, really like Retro Rocket, thought your brief run on Rogue was pretty good too. Looking forward to more stuff from you, especially with Paul.

I got Retro Rocket, it was OK, but not really the type of story I would read, no matter who was writing it. I've been thinking of picking up Exiles, though. I'll have to be on the lookout for some trades.

Hi Tony,

I like your new digs, looks like I've got a new bookmark to keep up with your adventures!

I've been collecting yours & Paul's Exiles (ok, so I get the ones in between too :P), so not disappointed to hear we'll get some additional issues from you guys. PLEASE do as you promised and get Paul to follow you to another book. Annihilation is ramping up the cosmic scale again, so I have to wonder if you could ever get anything close to the splendor that NEGATION was in any other place... be nice to see you be able to work with A-Lo again too. :)

I'll keep reading and checking in on you. Thanks for being one of the best! Always a pleasure to read a Bedard Book! :)

Yeah, I haven't quite been able to storm the ivory tower of Tom Brevoort's office yet, but I'll give it another go once I get a few more notable projects out there.

They're the ones doing Annihilation and whatever other cosmic stuff is happening these days.

Glad you're still hangin' with us, Camax. We'll have to split the atom again and come up with something as fun as NEGATION!

Welcome to CBR Mr. Bedard

I have enjoyed your dialogue assists in Uncanny X-Men so far. My question to you is this. If Marvel asked you to give them a pitch for the regular writing job on Uncanny X-Men, which X-Men characters would you use in your pitch if you could have any of the X-Men Universe characters you wanted to use?

Thanks, Badger Boy

Red Jack

Oh, thank GOD!

I've been dying for a way to at least get a note to Mr. B. for years!

I have to know how Negation would have played out. You've probably been asked this a billion times so maybe you have a FAQ about it. if so, just refer me and I'll head out.

That was, hands down, my favorite mainstream title, perhaps EVER.

I can't beleive you're leaving Exiles but that disappointment pales before the grief at Negations's loss.

Thank-you so much for Obregon Kaine.

Tony Bedard
04-24-2006, 07:38 AM
Red Jack,

Negation would have ended with Kaine tricking Charon and Danik, the two opposing "gods" of the CrossGen universe, into exposing themselves to Appolyon's secret weapon -- a bomb that would turn them back into regular humans. Then Kaine wouldhave beaten them both senseless with a toilet. You can find the toilet floating in space in the first issue of NEGATION WAR. Seriously.

Kaine would also have given his puppy, Chomper, to Komptin, as a way to make up for the death of Komptin's other dog. They wouldn't have become friends, but there would've been some sort of mutual respect between them eventually.

In Dragonball Z terms, Komptin was the Vegeta of the series.

I'm very glad you enjoyed NEGATION, too! It remains a creative high-point for me. Now go pick up back-issues of NEXUS and you'll see the comic that inspired me.

Badger Boy,

If I had a shot at Uncanny, I'd probably gravitate to the X-Men I loved back in the day: Wolvie, Colossus, Kitty, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Rogue.

As for stories, I'd try to give them more new villains, and underscore the original themes of being an outsider and of prejudice and intolerance.

Basically, I'd want to do what Joss Whedon's already doing much, much better than I ever could. ;)

At least you would have spared us the awfulness of Danger. ;)

Nexus was crazy good too but, you'll pardon me if Negation remains the apex.

You can't blow your own horn but I sure as hell can. If I can get my scripts half as crisp and chock full of character development, plot motion and action as that, I'll consider myself to have arrived.

With the exception of BATTLE CHASERS and the oft-delayed PLANETARY (distant third and second respectively and for different reasons) there has never been a single comic series I looked forward to more nor one whose passing I lamented more. Only when the entire MILESTONE line went away was I as deeply affected.

No more Shassa. Ever? Come on. How much does that bite?

Tell me Pelletier is actually a nice guy (on top of being a freaking GENIUS) and my day is made.

Tony Bedard

Pelletier is the best!

When I was in college back in a dark time we now know as the Eighties, the Cold War was still going strong and the threat of nuclear annihilation was every bit as palpable as today's fear of al Quedas with boxcutters. My ultimate friendship test back then was to imagine being in a post-nuclear holocaust scenario, reduced to bands of hunter-gatherers. Which of your friends would you want in your "nuclear squad," and which would you be forced to cast out (because they can't pull their weight, are untrustworthy, or generally lack balls)?

Paul Pelletier is first-string nuclear squad material. If I had a sister who was available, I'd want Paul to marry her. He's that solid of a human being. No bullshit, straight-talking, hard-working, funny, and insanely talented.

Yeah, Pelletier's a good guy.

Hey Tony! First, just wanted to say that I have become a big Exiles fan cuz of your run and I thank you for that. Quick question about World Tour. I'm curious to know, were there any other realities you had in mind for World Tour before you settled on what you chose?

Tony Bedard
04-27-2006, 07:25 AM
Y'know, I would've liked to have gone to the Ultimate universe, and to the Ultraverse, but neither one was possible. Also, if I had it to do over again, I probably would cut two-four issues off the Tour. But these things are learning experiences sometimes.

Glad you're liking EXILES. We have some really fun stuff coming up!

I'm a huge fan of Negation, and loved your runs on all of the Crossgen titles.

Did the character "Winslow" that was blown to bits in the first issue of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang have anything to do with me? :D

KISS KISS BANG BANG was a miniseries I did at CrossGen -- our take on the James Bond superspy genre. Mike Perkins and Drew Hennessy did the art. In fact, Mike came up with the basic premise.

It was supposed to run six issues, but we only got five out before ol' CrossGen ceased publishing. The sixth issue was all written, drawn and even lettered, but it never saw the light of day. Arrgh!!

And, no, it had nothing to do with the Val Kilmer thing.
