View Full Version : When and where can I pull Dan Slott's Thing?

I'd like to try this book out. I need to normally buy trades, as I just can't financially keep up with all the books I'm interested in every month. But in the case of the Thing, it sounds like a book I'd want to support, and I'd hate to see it get cancelled, while higher profile books not near the level of quality stay on the shelves.

So my questions are:

1. Where's the best place to get copies of back issues? I know this sounds like a no brainer, but I live about half an hour from the nearest shop, and it's back issue selection leaves much to be desired. I usually check out midtown comics, but they don't even have a few of the back issues. Any other sites I can check out?

2. Can I pretty much pick up any issue and enjoy it? Is there a good jumping on point?

Thanks for any help.

When I buy comics online I only use mycomicshop.com or milehigh and they are both pretty good. mycomicshop is a heap cheaper though.

As for jumping on points, issues 6 7 and 8 are all going to be "done in one", issues 4 and 5 are both "done in one" and issues 1-3 are a three parter.

I would say of the issues already out 4 and 5 are the best, but 1-3 are a lot of fun, especially if you were a fan of Two-in-One

LiveWire World (http://livewireworld.com), of course :D

you can contact the retail manager Slively through CBR, by PM or, better still, e-mail

Any issue from #4-#8 on jumps on fine as they're stand-alone tales

Well, I won issues 1-5 on eBay for $15.

Now I'll start getting it at the local shop, if I like it:)

Very funny title. I wonder what Mrs. Slott would have to say about it? :D

I don't think Dan is married yet.

You can jump on anytime, but the first three issues sort of flow. Issues #2-3 form a pair. Issue #5 just came out this week, as I recall.
If you buy your issues from a comic book shop with an advance pull list, you'll help save the book. If you buy from a newstand, you might find last month's issue.
If you buy from ebay, you might score a deal on the first five issues, but it won't help the future of the series.
(And I fear it may be too late for anything beyond issue #8, if I read this forum correctly!)

Jump in wherever, only 5 issues out now and its going to end. Im pretty sure 8 will be the last.

1-4 is the first entire story though if you just want those to read and see if you like it.

Well, I finally got my copies of Thing 1-5 from ebay.

The first three issues were kinda boring to me, and the writing was okay, but nothing laugh out loud. Just kinda cute.

Keep in mind, I'm not a huge fan of grim and gritty. I wasn't turned off by the light tone. I was looking forward to it.

Now, issue 4 is another thing altogether. The Watcher scene alone was worth it. But I kept finding myself laughing in this issue. "I think I COULD build this!"

The MAIN draw to this issue was the MESSAGE. It spoke to me because I've struggled with trying to buy happiness lately. I love fun comics with positive messages. It's too rare nowadays. Sure, some comics cover controversial political issues, but not many give positive messages about basic lessons we can all learn from. This is the kinda comic I'd buy musltiple issues for and give them to friends.

Now I can't wait to read issue 5. And I called my local shop and added Thing to my list. Well, I didn't HAVE a list, but now I do:)

Amen and halleujah :D.

I haven't read the first 4 issues yet but may seek some or all of them out when I have the opportunity ;).

I'm getting this series myself using a Marvel-ous sub. Based on past experience getting subs for Spider-girl and New X-Men, I've found these subs to work pretty good. Sure I've gotten a couple slightly damaged issues but it was nothing major.

And their arrival timing is awesome. Generally the comics arrive later the same week they come out or early the next week (DC subs tend to run a little later, usually arriving 7-10 days after they come out).

I don't mind waiting a few extra days to read a comic. I haven't been able to get to the LCS on new comic day in years so I just get them and read them when I can.

Better late than never ;).

Not sure if you'll be able to get a subscription to Thing, as it may be getting cancelled.

Well, maybe if Marvel gets enough interest in a subscription, they'll get the message?

Believe it or not it was 1 of 9 new comics added to the current subscriber sub solicitation form recently (it's on the flip side of that thick piece of cardboard that comes wrapped with the comics) :D.

When I saw I had the opportunity to potentially get 12 issues of this comic's tasty goodness for one easy payment of $19.97 it wasn't hard to seal the deal.

Just sent the sub out earlier this week though so it may be a bit before I see my first sub issue of this comic.

And if this comic does end prior to the sub and Marvel doesn't automatically pick a comic to finish out the sub (I'm guessing they'd pick a F4 comic due to Ben's roots) then I'll pick a cool comic of my own. But I am a longtime F4 fan so I wouldn't mind getting one of their series.

But hopefully the comic will last at least as long as my sub for it if not longer.

One big source of luck I seem to have is for all the time I've been subbing comics (been subbing DC comics for 7 years, Marvel for 1) I have NEVER had a comic be cancelled while I got it as a sub ;).

Yeah, along the way I've not renewed some subs but most of the comics I used to get are still plodding along.

The distinguished competition's JSA (which I subbed for 5 years before dropping out) is about to end but I think it's on the verge of a reboot, not a stint in limbo.

The lone exception to this rule is Spider-girl, which may be ending with issue 100 (just one issue into the renewal) but I've gotten so much enjoyment out of that series I couldn't miss the opportunity to get 100 in the mail (sure to be awesome). If Marvel rolls that one over it'll likely be into another Spider-comic but if I have a choice I'll consider my options.
