Hi,

I'm interested in buying some of the Marvel Essentials. But I'm not sure what's in them. I understand that there are the essential stories about particular heroes and such in them but are there actually complete comics in them? Or only parts of them? On some websites it says that they contain, as example, issues # 1-20. So they do contain 20 complete comics?
Thanks in advance!

Sorry if there is already a similar topic.

In black and white, though. I don't mind it, but it's a turn-off for some people.

Thanks for you fast answer. Were the original comics also in black and white?
And where can I buy the USA versions?

The original comics were in color. They use black and white for this type of reprint because it's cheaper.

Try amazon.com, I guess.

www.tplist.com (http://www.tplist.com) is a good resource to see what Essentials are avialable under which title, and which each volume reprints.

The Essentials start with the character or teams first apperence and usally go from there. For instance the Essentail Avengers 1 starts with issue 1 of the Avengers and went issue 24 or 25. Essential Avengers 2 starts from where 1 leaves off and goes for another 20-25 issues, and so on and so on.

On the other hand something like Essential Moon Knight kinda jumps around as far as books goes collecting his apperences in the order they came out in whatever book he showed up in. So in the Essential you have issues of Werewolf by Night, Marvel Team Up, Marvel Two in One, Hulk Magazine, and then finally the first 10 or so issues of the first Moon Knight series. You see this in most of the 2nd tier books covered in those Essentials.

Don't let the black and white scare you. Honestly alot of the stuff looks better in B/W just because coloring was so heavyhanded back in the old days.

Such as... The Shadow! :D

While they are cheaper I prefer to spend the extra cash on the Masterworks and get the book sin colour.

I do understand the appeal though... but some of the recent Essentials seem... odd. You can get most of the series in the quarter bins. I just got 12 issues for $3.00.

AND they are really not containing only essential storys, they are reprints of the whole run from the begining.

So look at the dates when the original comics in the book was made to understand what type of comics it is.
Even that Marvel is very reader friendly from the begining so can you note a diffrent between the early 60s stories and the late 60s-70s stories.

Yea I agree with this 100%. You can really see the way the stories have changed from Darevedil numb1 one to E Daredeilv number 2. Same with the Spiderman Stories.

Uncanny X-Men Vol. 2 collects stories from: (30 comics) For May 3rd
X-Men #25-53, Avengers #53 – 528 pages

Now THAT'S interesting... I hadn't realized they were the same page count. And yet there are more issues in volume 2... odd. I wonder if that means volume 2 will be omitting the backup stories about the origins of the X-Men that ran in the second half of the book for a while. Maybe they're saving them to supplement the third volume, if/when they do it.

Thanks in advance! You can see the cover art, etc., on Amazon and other sites. The paper is newsprint, the same thing they print newspapers on. It's a basic square-bound trade paperback with particularly cheap paper.

The interior art varies from volume to volume and even issue to issue within a single volume. I've read mostly Essentials of issues from the 70s, and the reproduction of the original artwork is generally clean and sharp, but there are one or two issues where they apparently didn't have the original artwork or films to work from and the quality is noticeably worse.

In Essential Fantastic Four 3, there are a number of issues that have greyscale "coloring" added, which appear to be from a secondary source. The quality is pretty poor on these issues. Fortunately, it doesn't include any of the Galactus stories but it's still a disappointing number of issues at the beginning of that volume. I don't know how common that is among other Essential volumes of the 60s as that's the only one I've bought and it's scared me away from buying any more.

But is the newsprint, like a normal newspaper, gray or "modified", white?

I got a few essentials and ive noticed since they started charging 16.99 for them there has generally been more pages (except godzilla) and better paper quality, also the books seem more sturdy than the older versions.
