Yes.
Also go for the volume one of the Astonishing X-Men trade. It's pretty good.
You can order the Essential Howard The Duck at any Border's or B&N.

Yes. I am currenty in the process of changing out as many tpbs as I can over to hardcover. Remember support your local comic shop...but Ebay is your friend when you are looking for a of new stuff.

thinking about essential moon knight.
Short of tracking down the actual issues, the Essentials are the best way to familiarize yourself with Marvel's heritage.
A few Essential recommendations that, basically, you can't go wrong with:
Avengers Vol. 3-5
Marvel Two in One Vol. 1
Defenders Vol. 1
Daredevil Vol. 2-3
Hulk Vol. 3
X-Men Vol. 1-6
Captain America Vol. 1-2
Iron Man Vol. 1-2
Thor Vol. 2
Spider Man Vol. 3-7
Spectacular Spider-Man Vol. 1

The most important book in recent Marvel history, to me, is Truth: Red, White & Black. Robert Morales delivers a cool and intelligent look at a tried and true character and Kyle Baker's art is nothing short of brilliant. This comic is so gutsy and stylish. I can't recommend it enough.

i really liked Skottie Young's pencils on this. not the typical look for the New Warriors, but very dynamic

Right now I'm pretty excited because I splurged on trades at Amazon. Anyway what I will be getting is
Ultimates Volume 1 Hardcover
Batman Long Halloween
Ultimate Spider-Man Vol. 6 trade
IDW Fallen Angel 1Trade
Sentry first mini with all one shots trade
Zombies Hardcover
X-Men Phoenix endsong
That should hold me for the month.
I think I'm gonna make it my new philosophy to just by mini series as trades tather than single issues.

I'm gonna hijack this thread. I'm a Marvel reader all my life but you just can't avoid the likes of Superman and Batman (and Speed is my fav. power i.e. The Flash). I wanna start reading Batman but I would feel like im betraying Marvel SO I can anyone recommend a marvel alternative to Batman that is equally as good story and art.

In the past people have said Moon Knight is Marvel's Batman. As for you reasonning for not buying dc just think of it like this. What does Marvel do for you other than you giving them money? My answer would be absolutely nothing so you should go buy what you want.

I'd say Daredevil has been closer to being Marvel's Batman since MK's been revamped into a killer recently.

Secret Wars (not to be confused with Secret War)
Essential X-Men volumes 1-7, plus Essential X-Factor, Uncanny X-Men and Classic X-Men. tpbs that collect X-Men issues from the 60's 70's and 80's. Plus X-Men Visionaries: Jim Lee.
Any Incredible Hulk book by Peter David
Daredevil Visionaries: Frank Miller
Thor Visionaries: Walter Simonson. Essential Thor.
Essential Spider-Woman
Essential Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four Visionaries: John Byrne volumes.
Essential Spider-Man.
Essential Avengers, as well as Avengers tpbs that collect 70's and 80's issues.
I'd reccomend any Essential volume except for Essential Wolverine II, III, and IV.

Sorry to piggyback on this thread but is Brubakers Book of Doom tpb/hardcover worth it? I have the money, I just want to know if its worth the 20 bucks.
Bendis-Maleev Daredevil
This can not be emphasized enough. This book made me a worshipper of Bendis.
And Ultimates 2. Oh Baybee!! It makes me forgive Millar for the travesty that is CW.
Also pick up The Inhumans with Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee--a frickin' masterpiece!
