I don't venture out much into the Marvel Universe. Outside of X-Men, Spider-man, Marvels, and Ennis' run on Nick Fury, I haven't read much at all.
I've read the articles and news announcements about this series. But what, as Marvel fans, can you tell me I can expect from this series?

It's supposed to be very new-reader friendly. Just know recent happenings of the Marvel Universe, I guess.
Know that The New Warriors have a reality TV show and that Nitro is responsible for the death of Captain Marvel (the first Marvel version of Captain Marvel, the Kree soldier). Know about the Spider-Man suit that Iron Man built for Spider-Man.
Just know recent events in the Marvel U.

You definitely will want to read Avengers Disassembled and House of M, but other than that after Civil War you'll probably come farther in to the MU.

I never read Dissasembled and read House of M just knowing Scarlet Witch went kookoo.

There's an upcoming TPB listed on Amazon called "Civil War Prelude" or somesuch that reprints Amazing Spider-Man #529-531 & New Avengers Illuminati Special, but won't be released until after the mini-series has already started.
Also, a scene shown at the end of Incredible Hulk #91 and again at the beginning of #92 is another bit, I suspect.
None of this is probably essential reading, but may help give a bit more background to the larger story.

I'll agree with Manicmatt. If you want the basic gist, Avengers Disassembled is a must. House of M is also another story that spins right into Civil War. Aside from that, you may want to check out Bendis' "Secret War" and the Fantastic Four TPB Vol 3: Authoratative Action, to get a little more insight as to WHY the government is pursuing the Super Hero Registration Act!
as far as what to expect? I'd say to me, it looks as though there will be some really big shakeups. Marvel has brought some heavy hitting writers, some with some pretty low hangers that hopefully won't shy away from going balls to the wall with this. Marvel can bring in a hefty amount of readers if they do this right. To me, it looks as though they are on the right track, let's hope they don't crumble under the pressure! I do however feel that, while there may be lasting repercussions from CW, eventually they will have to return to the (or at least close to the) current status quo! Which I'm sure many fans who currently HATE the idea of CW will then curse Marvel for going back to a similar status quo as before CW. But it's comics, hard to keep everyone happy you know?
But that's just my opinion!

Avengers Dissasembled and house of m are not neccesary to read civil war, just research the events leading up to it a little online and ul be fine.

Yeah, I don't know why everyone thinks these are crucial reading. Just know that Scarlet Witch went crazy, the Avengers went kaput, Cap and Iron Man reform them into the New Avengers, and then Scarlet Witch depowered most of the mutants.
I thought both stories were pretty mediocre, so just knowing the gist of what happened is good enough.
