Mongul in Infinite Crisis as a major player?

Okay, I remember reading in Wizard recently one of the creators of Infinite Crisis said, essentiaslly, we would see the return of a major badguy who has been absent from the DC univrse for a while. I assumed this would be Darksied, and there was that shadowy fella lurking around the remains of the JLA Watchtowere in IC #1.

Then, when all the Anti-Monitor tech popped up on Alex's machine, and the Superboy Prime Figure adds canme out, Anti-Monitor seemed the likely baddie refrenced above.

Well, now we've got one issue left, and neither of them has made an appearance in ernest. Then, I see a picture of a Mongul Figure as Part of the Initial Wave of Infinite Crisis Figures.

So Mongul is the mystery bad guy? Did I miss something? I never thought he was in the same league as Darkseid and Anti-Monitor? And does anyone
have any thoughts about how he might fit in? I am perplexed. :confused:

You might want to reread IC #1...Mongul is not only present, but he has a big fight with the Big Three that breaks up their little blame-fest!

Arghh! Completely forgot about that! Thanks! But still, that's it? That one issue appearance is enough to merit a figure along w SBPrime,Alex, Powergirl and the ubiquotis OMAC? It just seems odd. And, is he the returning big bad guy? If so, how does he fit in at the end here?

Yes, that is Monjul, Jr. The original Mongul was killed by Neron a few years back.

Ah, yes, but so was Mongul, Jr. in OWAW. I don't think they ever explained his return, much like the recent appearance of Despero or the supposedly-in-continuity-JLA/Avengers appearance of Starro.

The bigger question for me is why the hell they were killing off so many major powerhouse villains in the first place?
