"No underachiever, but rather one of the last living comics masters and a tremendous influence on many of the great talents working today in comics and animation, Alex Toth has been in the hospital the past several weeks and can use some words of encouragement, humor and appreciation. This message courtesy of the offical Toth Fans site run by Dave Cook. Please send your kind messages (I would think postcards are the way to go) to:

Alex TOTH, room 407
c/o Belmont Village of Burbank
455 E. Angeleno Ave.
Burbank, CA
91501-3083

Please, no requests for drawings or autographs. Just let him know what your work means to him and that you're thinking about him."

Okay. As an admirer of clean, uncluttered linework, including Paul Grist, Paul Rivoche, Xiame Hernandez, Steve Rude, Mike Allred, Tim Sale, Jeff Smith, Matt Wagner etc... Toth was the granddaddy of them all, and I'll certainly be wishing him and his family all the best.

I'm also betting there are folks around who aren't aware of this man's tremendous work and fantastic legacy, so if anyone wants to share any Toth memories or raves, I think it'd be nice to have a bit of that here.

I'm also thinking, and this is directed to the Moderators, that this could possibly be one of those 'all forums get this' message, because I'm sure there's folks on Classic Comics, or Oddball Comics, or Film & TV, who would love to express their love and admiration for one of the finest and most influential artists in comics history.

Damn. =(

This is one of the masters, kids. If you don't know him do a google - he's done a little of everything and anything.

That's a shame. I've only ever seen glimpses of his work but I hope he has a speedy recovery. My thoughts are with him and his loved ones.

He also did the great model sheets for the 70's Super-Friends TV show. If you get the chance to see his actual drawings (including his Jor-el and Lara), they are far better than what was aped in animation. He's a great talent, a giant in the medium, and I wish him a speedy recovery!

Wow...thats just a few miles from my house.

Hope the guy gets better, never read or looked at his work, but still a sad thing to see a fellow human who people respect in bad shape.

you say you've never seen his work, but chances are pretty strong you have. i don't think there's anything he hasn't done... comics, storyboards, designwork, the whole hanna-barbera line, everyyyyyything. plus, half the comic artists in the world worship this guys work as one of few people to really have an effect on everyone in the industry.
there's will eisner, jack kirby and him. (and a few more, but i'm not writing a book, so don't ask for all their names and biographys, plus i'm not counting the younger generations, frank miller, scott mccloud etc.)

O.O.

Oh wow, I just looked him up and wow, I remember so much of his art in Hanna-Barbera, I was a big time Space Ghost and Johnny Quest fan when i was a little kid.

Sad news. Alex Toth has passed away. (http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=7425)

I know he was well-respected by his peers in the industry. But I can't help but think that it's a shame that Toth isn't more recognized by fans and the public at large. The guy was one of the industry's greats, and his name absolutely deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the Eisners and the Kirbys.

His Wonder Woman design for the Super-Friends was elegantly simple. She's rarely looked as good, before or since, and Space Ghost might just be one of the best character designs ever. He was a great talent, and it's very sad to lose him.

Wow. I didn't know about A.T. until today. It's pretty sad to see
a very good artist go. My condolences to his family and friends.

For those sick of me pimping my own blog (this is the 3rd board, now), please accept my apologies.

I just wanted to mention that I've done a fairly long tribute to Toth on my blog, and thought some people might be interested in checking it out. http://seductionoftheindifferent.blogspot.com/

Wouldn't it be great if DC published a Best of Alex Toth with a good selection of his work from different genres?

At the very least, we deserve a Johnny Thunder Archives!
