View Full Version : Poll:Which Avengers have had the worst costumes ever?

A discussion on another thread, made me think of this, I think it could be fun to see what you guys think of the Avengers and what could be considered their lamest costumes.
Of all the Avengers past or present, which member has had the most unfortunate, cringe-inducing, WTH, unbelievable sartorial nightmare-costumes ever, in your opinion?
If you choose other, details and/or pics are encouraged.
Here's some visual aids for the poll choices:

Wonder Man's green and red costume and Hawkeye's Goliath are pretty up there. Janet is pretty hit and miss with the latest wasp costume being the best bar none.

I can't see the picture--but yeah. And Wasp certainly had her share of bad costumes over the years. However, the real stinkers was when the Avengers tried to capitalize on X-Force by having them wear body armor torsos, head gear, and carry BFG's. Even Captain America was wearing Liefeld-like headgear at one point.
EDIT: But from the one's we've got to pick from...that's a real challenge (plus they make my eyes hurt.) :)

The Black Knight has had 800 variations of the same costume, and all equally bad. So has Hawkeye.
The Swordsman actually has the worst of Black Knight and Hawkeye's costumes in one horrific combo.
Wasp is allegedly a fashion designer, but you wouldn't know it going by her atrocious costumes throughout the years.
Jack Of Hearts' costume makes him look like a sentient mass of superhero vomit.

Hawkeye's skirt and anything the Black Knight puts on.
When some of us think "Black Knight", we picture a scary bad guy riding on a steed. His image is one that makes the hero gulp. Now, picture Dane with or without his bomber jacket.
The image is some idiot at your local shopping mall informing customers that the fish and chips place is now open at the food court. Waving his sword in the air to attract more attention.

Definitely influenced heavily by the S&M/bondage crowd... Herc isn't that far away either, but definitely Goliath II was into bondage. Just look at the fishnet stockings and black cap lady that he used to hang out with!
But I got go with Jack of Hearts and the worst outfit... and Gilgimesh would have been right up there also, except, I never considered him an Avenger... just a tourist stopping over for the night. ;)

I just want to know why in God's name the Avengers ran around in bomber jackets for awhile in the 90s. Not just Black Knight, but also Crystal, Sersi, and Black Widow.
Hawkeye's skirt is definately up there as far as bad costumes go. Not too fond of Wonder Man's christmas color costume either. Another hall of shame vote goes to Hank Pym's Dr Pym outfit that was a blue hat, red scarf and blue jacket.

Jack Of Hearts: I liked Jack's original costume, but I can understand that it was too difficult for mediocre artists to draw.
Hawkeye: The skirt costume for Hawkeye was a mistake, but it looked decent when Barry Windsor-Smith was drawing it. I didn't like the brown Plantman look from the Heroes Return era.
Black Knight: With his basic armor and tunic, Black Knight looks decent. But when he started wearing white boots and/or the brown bomber jacket, that just violated common sense and too many fashion rules to count here.
Wasp: Complaining about Wasp's costume is like complaining about the weather in Missouri… wait a while and it will change.
Deathcry: I voted Deathcry for worst costume, although all I remember is her cynical resemablance to Wolverine.
Quasar/Marvel Boy: In comics, you really can't go wrong with a blue and red costume with yellow accessories. Quasar's costume have been okay.
Mantis: I dunno, I kind of liked the grass skirt look with the chinese fingercuff wristbands.
D-Man: I don't know the origin of his costume, but it looked like he found Daredevil's original costume and managed to squeeze into it before he
started doing steroids (or Power Broker treatments, whatever) and never took it off again.
The Swordsman: In hindsight, lavendar may not not been the best choice for costume color, but otherwise it was a decent costume. If it had been
gray, that would have been decent.

That looks neither sleek nor modern to me. In fact, that's the costume one of the bk micros wears on the first post of this thread;

Well, if it's enchanted plate armor, wouldn't it have to be clunky-looking? There wasn't any sleekness in the armor medieval knights wore. And I think that's the whole deal with Black Knight. He's supposed to resemble a medieval knight in some fashion. Hence the "Knight" part of his name.

Really, at the end of the day, these are all opinions. It's not like it is fact that Hawkeye or Black Knight have bad costumes. So let's just take it for what it's worth: very little. Maybe it's the colorists for issues that the color has appeared lighter  . Maybe it's readers looking at him from lavender-tinted glasses! :p Always looked like regular purple to me.

Let's use the logic of pro-Black Knight costume fans. What do you expect a hero from Ancient Times to wear? Gil is a warrior from his time period. They didn't have our modern fashion sense back then. If you updated his costume he just wouldn't be Gilgamesh, the first hero. He would be another guy in spandex. We have enough of those guys.
He has to have his cowhead, too, because Gil is not a modern hero. Just like the Black Knight. Though I don't think Gil would wear a bomber jacket and jet around on a sky cycle of some sort and then expect others to claim his attire is true to his roots.

I agree that Kang has got a terrible look. It only makes sense if you assume that fashions change *a lot* between now and his home century. Everything about his costume is dismal, especially the hip waders. Sadly, Tony Stark must have been very impressed by Kang's superior technology, because he has been using a similar hip wader boots in recent years.

I dunno, "worst costume" is definitely subjective, and a lot of costumes have had worse versions and better versions.
I like the character of Hawkeye and I still think the (fortunately short-lived) skirt thing was horrible, and the (Janet Van Dyne designed) Goliath costume not much better. I like the classic costume form, though various colorists have played with the schemes over the years - I tend to like the darker blue and purple version the most and the paler blue and light purple version the least. And I love the Ultimates black and red version. Don't care for the House of M redesign with all the bondage buckles and padding and too much purple. The eye mask thing has been amusing over the years, too, from a little mask with the suggestion of a wing-wedge thing at the top to the full face mask with the huge wings in Heroes Reborn (yuck).
The Wasp has had some eye-openingly bad cosumes over the years. For sheer cute factor, I like her original red-and-black costume with the pointed hat and the little skirt, though it'd look strange now. Her current costume is good, but the white one with the blue-trimming with the one bare arm and one bare leg is one of my least favorites. There was a green one in there somewher I wasn't fond of, too.
The Yellowjacket costume is a great visual design, but I wasn't fond of the "Dr. Pym, Adventurer" red coat look. His later Giant-Man costume, somewhat like the Hawkeye-as-Goliath costume but without the bare midriff and a differnt color scheme was interesting, though the giant bumps looked odd.
The Black Widow always looked best in her "Emma Peel" black catsuit with the belt and gold bracelets - didn't care for the gray one, and much as I like the character, those fishnets tights were awful.
A lot of the "time legacy" characters - Hercules, Gilgamesh, Black Knight - had trouble looking suitably modern yet not modern. Thor in his more classic costume pulled it off, but Thunderstrike didn't quite make it. Black Knight usually has too much "stuff" on his costume (ala Jack of Hearts) and Hercules and Gilgamesh always look like they should be very, very cold in a NY winter.

The bomber jacket is gone and the sky-cycle is not part of a costume, which is what we're discussing.
Nope. We are discussing the worst costume. Bomber jacket fits. Just like Hawkeye's skirt or an old Wasp costume does. Plus his fans want to have it both ways. His costume is ok to them because it's a Middle Age deal, but yet Dane flew around on a sky cycle and his weapon was a light saber. Both are futuristic items.
So, is Dane a future hero or a Middle Ages one? He started off with a ray blasting lancer and a sword that he only used the blunt side off and then progess to sky cycles and light sabers. What a mess! I bet Santino created his look.
Well, at least he is carries a shield now and there is no "BK" on his helmet. Justin the Shining Knight comes closest to what a smart dressed horseman should look like in comic book form.

I hate all these costumes:
Sue Storm's "sex-bomb/4-shaped-boob-window" nineties costume.
Gilgamesh's cow head.
Scarlet Witch's Search For She-hulk and gypsy-princess outfits.
Every single one of Black Knight's costumes.
Jack Of Hearts. Also an all-time, all periods dud.

This is the allegedly modern costume.
As you can probably see, it's the same costume he's always worn, but with added extra-large, extra clunky shoulder pads/armor and very modern-looking ;) pseudo-metallic gloves and a loincloth instead of the underwear.

Tastes is hard to determine. But in my view, I think Cage is upset that Black Knight got his fish and chips order wrong. That modern costume with the Quarterback towel is ... not as great as some fans make it out to be.

I'm trying to work out whether Thunderstrike is good or bad? His sleeveless jacket is typically 90's (artists tended to add jackets to established classic costumes to make them more "modern". See Rogue, Black Widow, Cap, but thankfully not Spidey, he got a hoodie!) but the ponytail is almost unforgivable. He looks like a biker/construction worker, not the conduit for a GOD!

RE: Stonegold
I know Thunderstrike was a contruction worker, but unlike most heroes he tended to wear his profession on his sleeve. The equivolent would be Spidey swinging in with a camera dangling from his neck (or more recently a mortar-board on his head), or well Murdock wearing a nice pinstriped suit over his costume. I'm not saying it was wrong of dear Thunderstrike, but it was certainly odd.

Actually, Spidey's new duds resemble Iron Man's more than the Spider-Armor ever did (or maybe Spider-Woman's) :D
And technically, the Cap Armor worked on the same principal practically as Iron Man's. For Tony, it acts as the world's most beefed up pacemaker, while Cap had to wear it to stay alive as well.
But enough fanboy nitpicking. Bottom line: armor on a superhero who doesn't normally wear armor sucks. Especially if they're drawn by this guy:

Hawkeye
Cyclops (In fact all the original X-Men but Cyclops wore his until 1990!!!)
Jean Grey (X-Factor)
Black Canary (DC)
Captain Marvel (DC)
Captain Marvel (Marvel Secret Wars Female Version)
Black Knight

Wonderman (Not any more, he was exonerated by Mothmonsterman. Until i find pictorial evidence, Wonderman is officially not on this list)

and of course Father Time.

i've never equated comic book illustrations and costumes with sexuality...despite the claims of doc wertham. i do agree that comicbook female footwear can be completely unreasonable for fighting but it is one of the smallest suspensions of disbelief the reader is asked to make. kiss had ridiculous footwear and still beat the phantom of the themepark, and that was in real life! :)

I love garish, gawdy, outlandish, nutty, theatricality in superhero get-ups. What I hate is when they try to un-superhero the looks. The era leading up to Onslaught was the most stultifying Avengers period ever. The tendency was to make them all look the same - tights, boots, no shirt ( for the guys), long hair, stubble ( also for the guys ), and a headband. And the leather jacket jag got tiresome real quick.
I'd take the red and green Wonder Man ( complete with absurd Hostess cupcake swirls on his belly ) any day over the boring "realism" of mid 90's look of the Avengers, where colors seemed to be a no-no.
