And do so very well, in my opinion.
Check out the song & video here. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=vfUnbEYbpLg)
As a lifelong Queen Fan & someone who has been listening to the Flaming Lips a lot over the last year I give this two thumbs up!

What....video....is....this?
For a cover that doesn't really do anything new with the song being covered, that wasn't half bad.
(except for the parts where the singer couldn't hear himself)

They didn't really put their own stamp on it, but it was still a pretty decent cover.
EDIT: Which is exactly what Core said. Dang it!

Oh, I dunno. They managed to suck the life out of an excellent tune by doing a video with a nekkid chick in it. That's kind of new.

Yeah, Coyne is WAY better.
No. He's really not. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a huge fan of Queen but how can anyone deny Mercury's superb vocal abilities?

He doesn't have have the most techinically perfect voice, but Coyne has more emotion in his voice and it's way more unique and he has way more range. (compare yoshimi to early lips)
Not that Mercury is bad, but he can't compete with Coyne

More range? If he does he sure as hell doesn't show it here, the original went a great bit higher as well as a great bit lower. He also doesn't have an ioata of Mercury's power. I'm also not seeing the emotion or unique arguements at all, or at least compared to Mercury.

Mercury's got a pretty standard rock voice. Coyne went from a garage rock shouting to his current voice which is so unique i don't even know what to call it.
Coyne is having fun singing...he's not whiny at all...i can see a lot of modern artists being called whiny but not the Flaming Lips.

Sorry, but I hear the lackadaisical whining in Coyne's voice, too. Mercury's singing was much more bold and exciting than this. To be specific, I found Coyne's singing to be weak, shrill, raspy, and empty of any convincing emotion. He should stick to the Flaming Lips songs, which are generally better than this mess.

Have you ever actually heard any Queen? I ask this because you seem to be picking up something the rest of us aren't.
When various artists were being interviewed backstage, Robert Plant was the one who admitted that the rest of Queen had actually slowed down the songs & lowered the intrument volumes because nobody there (that includes David Bowie, Elton John, Axl Rose, Roger Daltry, Liza Minelli & Plant himself) could cope with performing at the same speed/volume as Freddie.
If Robert Plant can admit that, then the benchmark has been set pretty high.
So, much as I love the Flaming Lips, Wayne Coyne isn't even in the same stratosphere as Freddie Mercury.

I mean, it's entirely subjective.
basically, Queen sounds really generic to me while the Flaming Lips sound really innovative. Maybe the entire sound of the band is affecting my opinion of the singer.
the emotion in Coyne's voice on The Soft Bulletin is amazing. And it goes to show his range...how different he sounds on something like "Race for the prize" and something like "Jesus Shootin' Heroin."
I won't say that Mercury isn't in the same stratosphere as Coyne, but Queen certainly isn't in the same stratosphere as the Flaming Lips.

Heh.
I'd love to hear Wayne Newton's take on it.
Or Wayne Hancock, maybe?

The Flaming Lips blow Queen out of the water in my opinion. The Lips are far more innovative and have a far more diverse catalogue. Not to mention that they flat out sound better, whether they're doing garage rock band or a dream pop.

Dude, Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the most innovative songs of all time. And that's not really an opinion. I mean, it starts out with a pretty standard, arena rock opening. Then it suddenly changed into a straight up Oprea. After that went on, it changed into complete hard rock section. And look at the key changes too E flat major to F minor to A major in just one section of the piece. Not to mention, this song includes a full classical piano. Now that's innovation right there.
Also, Queen practically created Arena rock and they were one of the forerunners of Glam rock. Can the Flaming Lips say they did any of that?

I'd have to agree with that. I don't know every Queen song, and I don't know every Flaming Lips song, but of the songs I do know from each, the Lips are far more diverse. Freddie Mercury had a great set of pipes, though.
Anyway, if I had to choose, I rather listen to the Lips rather than Queen. The reason being the Lips can run the gamut of emotions: from cheery stuff (like the Yeah Yeah Yeah song or She Don't Use Jelly) to rocking (The W.A.N.D. or Talkin' 'Bout The Smiling Deathporn Immortality Blues) to completely depressing (Ego Tripping At The Gates Of Hell or Mr. Ambulance Driver)

Glam rock, Arena rock, progressive rock, oprea, hard rock, Rockabilly. The list goes on and on. You can't call Queen not diverse.

You're right, and nowhere in my previous post did I say Queen wasn't diverse. I said the Lips were more diverse than Queen.
It doesn't mean that Queen is any less of a band, it's just that the Lips are more experimental. Queen's oeuvre is a little more traditional, but they still expanded the boundaries of rock. Thankfully, Queen wasn't REO Speedwagon (or insert you favorite shit band that just played it safe and never tried anything)

Although I love the Flaming Lips' music, Wayne Coyne's "Hey kids have you seen how ironic I am? / I think I'm gonna barf" face and his "let's wave my hands like a Punch & Judy puppet and pretend I'm dancing" body attitude make me want to knock his teeth out with a sledgehammer.
