View Full Version : The I-Beat-Deathstroke-to-an-"Operation: mindcrime II"-Review-Thread Thread
I think the disc starts off good. "I'm American" and "One Foot in Hell" are pretty good tunes.
Then things start to go downhill; the middle of the disc is pretty standard stuff. Lots of good music, but the lyrics just don't support the music at all.
It picks up again near the end. "A Junkie's Blues," "Fear City Slide" and especially "All the Promises" are good. "Promises," I can't wait to see Geoff Tate and Pamela Moore sing live. Moore is good in her parts.
Ronnie James Dio is also good, but under used.
In the end, it's that most maddening of discs. One that shows promise, but ends up middle-of-the-road.

Operation Mindcrime II... it could have been a good idea about a decade and a half ago... maybe.

I heard about half of it and couldn't listen to anymore. It was never going to be as good as the first one obviously, but what I heard completely lacked the anthemic, grand nature of the original. It didn't seem to have the flow or cohesiveness of the first one.

Guys, I haven't taken it out of the wrapper yet. Should I return it to Tower?

It is a direct sequel to the first one, meaning is it a continuation of the story line in that one. Or is it a new one?
Haven't bought it yet. To be honest, I'm not sure that I will. I loved Operation Mindcrime - its one of my favorite albums of all time. But I don't like the first song "I'm an American" off this one.
Maybe when I can pick up a used copy I'll get it or maybe sooner if I hear some other stuff off it I like.

Operation:mindcrime II doesn't give you a hint?
LOL! :D
Yes, it's a direct sequel set approximately 18 years after the first album.

I wish you guys woulda told me to return it.
8 songs in, and I wish I woulda spent the $13 on cheap porn.
Maybe I've just grown out of Queensryche. This is the first I've heard of them since Promised Land, which ALSO let me down.
Could the missing Chris DeGarmo be that detrimental?
... and, NO WAY is this band worth paying $35 plus surcharges at the House of Blues.

I guess I'm in the minority with Deathstroke. I dug this album. It does what Queensryche has always done. Push things forward. They didn't do a complete return to the original Mindcrime, soundwise, and they shouldn't have. Queensryche has never been a band that has looked back, musically, and said let's do that sound again.
People seem to forget that Chris Degarmo was the one who wanted to make the major sound change that was Hear In the Now Frontier. He left, but the band pushed on, though he returned, slightly, for their Tribe record and made no impact on the writing at all.
At the end of "I'm an American", I wasn't sure if it was Ministry or Queensryche. The producer did contribute heavily to the writing of this album, but the band wouldn't have let him if the guy didn't bring something that they liked, and if you can make your way through a couple of songs in the middle, the latter part of the record delivers, and as a whole, it's still one of the better albums I've heard all year.

I'm one of those that completely agrees with you and your review. The original was one of my favorite albums of all time. The sequel is a worthy successor that doesn't feel like a rehash.
Best album I've purchased in a long time.

By the way, Queensryche will debut on the Billboard album chart at #14 with first week sales for Operation:mindcrime II of 44,000 copies
