I've heard it and I DO like them a lot. If you like Neutral Milk Hotel, another group you might want to try would be The Mountain Goats.

I love The Mountain Goats. Also they're from my town.
I've never heard of Neutral Milk Hotel and, being that their band initials would be NMH, why are you referring to them as NMT?
Just curious.

T is near H on the keyboard, he might have mis-typed it.
I've been hearing about Neutral Milk Hotel for months now, but I haven't gotten around to looking into them yet. What do they sound like?

Neutral Milk Hotel are cool. When I lived in a cabin in the woods two years ago we played them constantly for about a month, when I hear them now I can still smell our old shack. I've got two albums, the one which has King of Carrot Flowers on it and a live album. I recommend these guys they're pretty good.

Sounds, I'm not sure if this will suffice, but the best way I can describe it is folkish lyrics, with slow rock acoustics. And the singer has a very mello voice. Try it out, good stuff. NMH or NMT, which ever fits your fancy... =)

In The Aeroplane Over the Sea is the best album of the 90's. No Doubt in my mind. Neutral Milk Hotel is one of my favorite bands, and the live Jeff Mangum CD is great too.
They're a fuzz-folk band, basically, with some psychedelic tendecies, I suppose. Mangum's a great lyricist and guitarist with a catchy voice.
Too bad they don't exist anymore.
The Mountain Goats are also good, though I need to hear more of their solo stuff.

I understand the lead singer of neutral milk is touring the deep south, recording blues?

Jeff Magnum is, I believe, fairly involved in the Elephant Six collective, which has produced a bunch of pretty neat bands, including Apples in Stereo and Elf Power. If you like Neutral Milk Hotel, Elephant Six is certainly worth looking into.

Jeff Magnum is one of the most brilliant singer/songwriters ever. I have In The Aeroplane Over the Sea on vinyl and listen to it all the time.

I think this band gets talked up alot, but I don't get it. Nothing really earth shattering for me.

LOL @ pitchfork reviewer
I'm of the opinion that both of those albums are overrated. To me, Loveless isn't even the best shoegaze album (Slowdive's Souvlaki is Aeroplane's closest competitor to me) and OK Computer isn't even the best Radiohead album (Kid A and Amnesiac are stronger to me...of course that was the 2000's, though)

They get talked up a lot, but they deserve it. Their Fuzz folk, neo-psychedelic and almost irish sound is totally unique. Mangum is a brilliant guitarist and one of the greatest lyricists ever. It's Mangum's lyrics that really sets them apart for me, they're beautiful imagistically and they have a powerful meaning without slapping you in the face with it. The trumpets are cool too.

My mother gave me this record for Christmas back in 1999. I love it. I mean, I reaaaaaally love it. I don't know if it's the best record of the 1990's but it's surely in the top ten.

XO and Either/Or - Elliott Smith
Summer Teeth - Wilco
Electro-Shock Blues - Eels

I haven't heard Electro-Shock Blues All of those albums are very good, particularly Wilco's. I'm not the biggest Pavement fan in the world though. And I think XO is overrated, his S/T and Roman Candle aremore enjoyable to me. My 90's top twenty would be something like:
1. NMH - In an Aeroplane Over the Sea
2. K-Rino - Stories from the Black Book
3. Slowdive - Souvlaki
4. The Flaming Lips - Clouds Taste Metallic
5. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
6. Modest Mouse - This is a Long Drive...
7. Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun
8. Yo La Tengo - Painful
9. Playa Fly - Movin' On
10. Belle & Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister
11. Calexico - Spoke
12. DJ Shadow - Endtroducing...
13. The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
13. Latyrx - The Album
14. Ride - Nowhere
15. Wilco - Summerteeth
16. Moose - ...XYZ
17. The Flaming Lips - In a Priest Driven Ambulence
18. Elliott Smith - Either/or
19. Radiohead - OK Computer
20. K-Rino - No Mercy
