Hey all, I'm a new member, I've posted these images over the last few weeks on a handful of forums in seperate threads but figured I might as well dump them into one instead of flooding the board with new threads.
Hope you like it.

I'm no pro and would never claim to be, but these are good. I have an affinity for pencils so I think those are my Fav. But I also like what you did with the light coming off the armor in the last one. VERY COOL!!!

My. Freakin’. God. =O Those Guardians of the Galaxy covers made me happy. And by happy I mean “happy”. Whoa!
You sure those aren’t for a real revamp? Man, only thing that’s missing to accompany that art is the story; I’d read that Guardians of the Galaxy revamp.
The rest is amazing, and the Ice Age sequential is really funny.
Kudos.

PsychoZeke- Glad you like them. The truth is that it was actually done as a pitch for a new Guardians series that I was told got rejected a few months back. Story of my life. The whole story was planned out and it would have been sweet. The story wasn't mine so I can't say anything about that but this is how the book and characters would have looked as I was slated to draw it.
I also pitched New Warriors a good while back which I was proud of at the time but that was rejected due to the new direction they went with the Skottie Young version as I wanted to make it darker and they wanted to make it a cartoon.
Still trying to get my big 2 break any way I can.
Glad you like it and the scrat.

Dude, it's not often I say "Image Inspired" and not mean it as a knock, but you're pinups/covers show everything I loved about the over the top energy of early Image guys without the lack of style that often came with it.
And you sequential pages (cute ending btw) show you're more than just a pin-up dude.
You're GotG redesigns are very shafty. Modern, cool, but not a complete departure from the originals.
Good work, and good luck!

Seriously! You are like Liefield with a sense of proportion! Killer stuff.

BoosterBronze- Thanks alot for all the compliments for my work. I'm glad that you feel that I have a range as an artist with the sequentials, normally people do get the perception that all I can do is pin-up art because I am Image inspired. So thanks!
TroyCarlson- Thanks as well to you, Troy. It's great that you like the work. As for the shirt, I couldn't tell you wear to buy one at, Hot Topic maybe?

Ray- His name is SCRAT! And he rocks.
I threw together the sequential purely to show clear storytelling ability. I popped Scrat in there because I felt if I can make the 2 pager funny as well I figure that'd be a good way to wrap it up instead of going nowhere with it.
All I know about "Mike Jones" is the phrase "Who is Mike Jones?". I have no clue who he is.
Good to hear from ya, Ray! You going to Chicago this year by any chance?

Hey all,
Here is a new redesign I did of Namor and Namorita. Before anyone says it, yes, I am aware that they are cousins. They're just close.

Namor looks dynamic, (and a little like Amazo) but Namorita just looks like some dame in a swimsuit. And they are royalty, so kissing cousins is kinda normal.:)

True to form, it appears Namorita's about to stab him in the back. [/will not use smiley] Seriously, it's a great rendering/redesign for the character (except for the glove).
What exatly is Namor wearing on both arms ?
Jon Malin
04-20-2006, 02:52 PM
BoosterBronze- Thanks!
Solaris- Thank you very much, I'm happy that you like it...and Namorita SHWING!
Chocolove- You are the ONLY one to catch, on any board, the visual with the knife that she is going to stab him in the back(though I got a few replies saying she was going to stab his butt). It's supposed to be subtle for sure but you got it and that's really cool for me. The concept I wrote for this has Namorita making a powerplay against Namor.
Namor is wearing what I considered a form of royal armor.
-Jon
Nice work, got more Namor stuff? I like this version of him.

It's a fair compromise between the shorts and the black costume, maintaining Namor's primary look while taking a more sensible approach. It's just odd seeing Namor wear so much clothing. :p And good luck breaking in with the big two.

Hey everyone, just reporting the news.
I've returned from Chicago and I blew the talent search, I didn't make the list and never came close to a review/interview.
I'll never know the exact reason I was passed on by every department at DC. I felt the art was at least at a level for an review, guess not.
Thanks for everyone's help.

Awww... That's so sad. I liked the art a lot. The perspective seemed a bit off in a couple panels. But I have seen them be pretty lax on that stuff. Better luck next year? :(

08-07-2006, 12:19 AM
I think your work is pretty good, but as others have mentioned, there are some perspective problems.
Unlike the others, I don't see this as a small thing. Perspective is the basis for almost all the other aspects of art. Without it, the underlying structure of everything an artist draws will most likely be wrong.

Jon, your skills speak for themselves, and they are vastly superior to my own (so I'm not sure if I feel qualified to comment). I'd be interested in whatever criticism you've gotten from the Big Deuce, cause this stuff seems right up their alley. I'd also love to see your work on something that's not in the superhero genre (although action packed is good!). Sometimes it's not a question of skill level, but of establishing an unique, innovative look. perhaps a change in subject matter will inspire some new stylistic influences.
Sincerely,
SmittyX.

Dustin- Thanks and yeah.
Affinity- Thank you very much.
SmittyX- I've been completely ignored by DC. I never get past the talent search submission box with them. Never met or talked with a single editor.
I have a Marvel contact and he has kept in touch and doesn't have any criticism for the most part(he thought Kitty's hands were a little large) but I still haven't been offered any work, instead I keep doing sample pages for him. I'm under the impression that I'm zeroing in on a project finally but we'll see.
foxfire- GREAT! Now get into Marvel or DC!
Pheonix-NoRelation- I wish, but I don't think Joe Q has ever seen my work. I believe it's handed around to a few of the lower level editors. I don't know for sure.
twilight- Thanks.
Iangould- Not for X-MEN, I was going to work from a sample script for X-MEN but since my chances are pretty much zero for doing an X book out the gate my Marvel contact is switching me over to a sample script for a book that I might actually have a shot at drawing one day.
Balian- No, this is all I did for the X-MEN.
spoon_jenkins- Yeah, give me some work, MARVEL!
13th- Thanks, I'd appreciate the support.
Kaos- I don't know, I wish I knew why I was asked to draw the X-MEN in the first place if my contact knew there was almost no chance for a newbie to draw them.
Ontir- I did. Was pretty much laughed at when I asked if they would need a fill-in guy or maybe an artist for back-ups after he leaves.

Well, never give up on that, these are seriously great drawings.
But did you show them panels? they don't care much about splash pages, they want to see what they're going to be paying you for.
Because if your panels are as good as your full pages, I can't wait to see them.
Jon Malin
09-06-2006, 01:13 AM
kmeyers- Marvel asked me to do these Character studies, I didn't do it on my own. Marvel has been seeing my sequentials for a long while now and was planning to have me work from an X-MEN sample script following these studies.
Upon the realization from my contact that the chances of me doing anything with X-MEN is remote, he is now planning to send me a sample script for characters I would have a better chance to work on.
Here's some of my seqs...

Great work man! I REALLY like your stuff. It's definitely better than some of the stuff they're publishing at the moment!
a few hints though, constructive, promise:
Page7, the first3 panels are fantastic, but with the last panel, Scott's face looks a bit flat. With close ups like that, just add hints of contour. I know a lot of guys leave that up to the coloring, but it will make your pencilling stronger, and you give them the option to follow YOUR portrayel of his face.
Page8, Same thing with white queen's face. You have a solid side profile but not a lot of features as there need be. Don't get me wrong, it's not something WRONG, but something that would make it work better. I struggled with the same thing (I'll post a page on my 'Phreak's sketchbook' after this for you to check out). My personal opinion is just that one should never become complacent with doing as other artists do, but rather aim to do it differently or better. This page is powerful though, and Wolferine at the right bottom in the reader's face works perfectly. Emma might just be a bit 'posed' behind him.
Page9: Is perfect, and works for me, and having read the comic, I kinda know what was happening too.
I think your work is great though, and I personally wish I could draw such clean pencils! Anyway, keep up the awesome work, and keep us posted.

Affinity- Thanks, yeah I felt the same way after I drew it. About a week later I went to a comic shop and found a copy of the actual issue and it was sweet seeing the different approach.

SamuraiJack- You'll certainly see it colored. I had a request for a high res for coloring about a week ago, I figure another week might be a good guess, depends on the artist though.
13th- I don't believe it took more than 5 hours. Glad you like the work.
Kaos- Thanks, I'm really looking forward to seeing it colored. I believe he's going to give it a painterly look so it'll be interesting.
Ontir- Rob is a big influence on my work.
You can see more of my work in the Supreme comic I drew(Supreme Sacrifice #0) or the 2 Nitrogen books I drew. If your shop doesn't have copies they can order them or you can get them at the Arcade booth or JayCompany booths in SD or Chicago. Beyond published work, I should have something new posted pretty soon.

Hey man, you definetly have a future in comics in my opinion.
Kind of an Olivier Coipel feel to it, but not a copy-cat, so it`s great!
I don`t know about Marvel, but you should be able to walk into somewhere in the industry and build from there. Good luck!
In a critical way, my problems are Emma at the bottom of page 8. And the last panel on page 9 with Scott coming to reality is a little dry.
But in no ways should these be changed. It takes time to perfect your craft, and pretty much every proffessional artist out there has a bad panel or picture once in a while. You`re good man.

Three criticisms:
First, Wasp's stance looks really weird. Even when they're not supporting her weight, her legs shouldn't be that wide apart.
Second, Iron Fist is essentially pimp-smacking Ultron. Some people might find that silly. I'm not one of them, but still.
Third, Cage looks too "shiny," and he's not really doing anything.
Other than that, I like it.

Provided he'd activated the Iron Fist first, I guess. It's just the image that some might find silly.

I like the bitch slap myself. It's also very well executed. This could be well into the fight between the two and Ultron is almost finished and so Iron Fist theatrically bitch slaps him to convey to all around that the fight was easily won, that Ultron is basically a bitch to be slapped. That's some message.

In an attempt to cut off the 2 questions I KNOW I'm gonna be asked....

2. Where did her clothes go?
Let me provide my answer---

I appreciate that someone put all my old art threads into one thread but it's all a bunch of dead links. The thread can stay and I'll post my new stuff in here if you'd like but please start it with this piece or people won't get this far treading through page after page of dead links. Pretty good; though I have to ask if you have a problem with characters from about knee's on down.
Because that seems to be about the cut out point for each of the characters.
Aside from that its pretty good.
Jon Malin
05-26-2008, 07:31 PM
Taz- Thanks, I have fun doing that stuff. I get to basically shut my brain off for a while and just have fun.
Gumbo Maximillian- Actually yes, you see I only taught myself to draw from the knees up. If a foot could make a fist I'd draw it.
Actually I draw knees and below all the time. As a matter of fact, most of my pages are only of feet to knee shots and people are like..."I guess you can't draw from the knee up".
If only I could marry the two....
