View Full Version : Captain America Anniversary Special Issue

The current creative team of Ed Brubaker and two other artists have produced a $3.99 special 65th anniversary issue that stands outside of current continuity... but may lead into future storylines. (Note the double epilogue that foreshadows stuff.)

The special is arriving in comic shops today, and features not only Captain America but Bucky, and Sgt. Fury and the Howlers as well.

My LCS held me a copy, as I have Cap on pull, so I got it at a discount as I ran to work. ;)

My silly boss seems to think that I am supposed to do work at work, and so I have not been able to read the issue....yet.

What do you think of this issue.
Is it as good as the Winter Soldier story arc, given that it is a one-issue tribute?

Is there room in the Marvel schedule for an ON-GOING WORLD WAR II series featuring Captain America, Bucky, Sgt. Duffy, Capt. Sam Sawyer, the Howlers, Sgt. Nick Fury and the rest of a supporting cast?

Yeah, now there's the real question, what was Doom doing in Germany 550 years ago?
Here's the real answer. He wasn't there (unless Brubaker wants to **** around with time travel).

My guess, is that it's the exact same type of setting and story, in today's time. They find a map to one of Doom's uber weapons, like how they did with that really dumb robot with the heart.

Wow!

I really liked this issue...the technology shown and the dialogue seemed at times kind of hokey, but thats the way its supposed to feel, it really brought an authentic feel to the times

And this explains to me who that girl was with the Bucky in that picture in the last Cap issue....I thought that was Bucky and Sin for a minute, now I know that it's Gretchen/Black Bird. I'm looking forward to see how Bucky handles this the next time we see him, because we now know the real reason he was in that little town was because of her...

how much of the issue is new material?

It is ALL new material... an untold tale of WWII of a joint mission between Sgt. Fury and his Howlers and Captain American and Bucky behind enemy lines ....with all except the final two pages which are set in modern day.

Remember how the flashback sequences in the Winter Soldier story arc established important relationships to the modern day story? Well, the entire 36 pages of the back-story are the main feature here in an original story, and the two page epilog brings the story forward to modern day.

I would view this as essential information for the tapestry that Ed is weaving, though this special edition can and does stand entirely on its own.

This is NOT one of those 100 page Monster reprint books that Marvel has thrown out regularly whenever they want to celebrate a "milestone" with two reprint stories and an 8-page new tale that feels thrown away. ALL THIS ISSUE IS NEW.... just set in the past.

I like it. And those who have read "Marvel Super-Villian Team-Up" may be able to shed some light on if this has ties into that continuity, or if this is wholely new cloth. I think there was a reference to "Sleepers" that is a tip of the hat back to Jack Kirby's amazine four parter in Tales of Suspense. :D

PS: Don't judge a book by it's cover. The cover may be symbolic, but it has NOTHING to do with the story inside. I saw no connection, except that it evoked sort of a World War II morale poster feeling. But none of the cover background characters appear in the story.

Its a good books also some *spoilers below*

It’s nice to see that Ed acknowledges what the enhancement of the SSS did to our Super-Soldier.

As he has Captain America run over 5 miles to the nearest Doctor to help save a wounded Bucky. As Captain America states when he has to, he can run a mile over a minute. That’s like 60 mph, while carrying Bucky and wearing *chain mail*. As the regular soilders state why did they not make more people like Captain America, since the war would have been won much easier.

Cap also withstands an explosion without it showing most of the *shield* absorb the impact. Cap is defiantly a Super-human and its nice to see him do it as well not just Ultimate Cap. As Captain America has done this since day one.

What a GREAT issue!

Favorite of the week.

I'm a fan of stories set in the golden age which was one of the reasons I LOVED Bru's new Cap series... those flashbacks rocked. And now this... GET THIS MAN ON AN INVADERS TITLE SET IN WORLD WAR 2!

Great stuff Ed!

Ed, was this an idea you pitched for the anniversary or were you approached about it?

Who's Black Bird?; I've never heard of her.

Also (though I haven't read it) in the issue of Wolverine where he fought Bucky, Bucky was apparently bailed out by some woman, is it Gretchen?

I was glad to be seeing Pulido illustrating another comic. I loved him on Robin: Year One and his fill-ins on Human Target.

Frozen, and mostly the serum. The super soldier serum keeps him young as well. Fury has had access to the Infinity Formula, which retains his youth. Dugan on the other hand, I have no idea about.

I really enjoyed this comic. Captain America & Red Skull work soooo well within the World War II setting, it's a shame Marvel doesn't do this sort of thing more often.

Although, that was a pretty crappy robot design. It cannot be beaten! ....um, unless you just smash the glass container in his torso with the heart floating around. Gee, thanks scientist guy, Cap could have never figured out something that obvious on his own.

Not one of Doom's better works. ;)

Yeah, Ed really makes Bucky one cool cat.

Great issue, really really enjoyed the art and how it matched the setting. It looked alot like Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier book but set in Marvel time. I got a kick out of seeing all the old world technology and little subtle stuff like the flashlights, the hugewalkie talkies, and the big goofy looking robot although it was pretty funny how fast it went down.

I loved seeing Fury and his Howling Commandos alongside Cap and Bucky as well, it made for some great action and characterization between them although it's always odd to see Nick without the eyepatch since I've gotten so used to seeing him with it. Interesting epilogue at the end, I agree that it looks to be another similar situation to the old Baron in the past but with a modern setting of Doom being gone. That part in the end would have had to have taken place obviously after Lukin finds himself merged with Red Skull but before Doom touches down although I'm not sure if it takes place during the current arc.

Makes me wonder what the Red Skull wants from Doom castle.

Very cool. Batman and Robin run a four minute mile. I remember reading somewhere that the Supersoldier serum did more than "Peak Human" I don't recall how it was phrased but something like a Human is only able to reach 60-75% of their potential, while a Supersoldier raised that ability to 100%. I could never find that quote again, but this seems to back it up. Olympic athletes can't do a minute mile.

Cap had the serum and he was special. If he was at the Peak Human ability, then ANYONE could train real hard and be at peak human ability (like Batman) Cap was something.... More.

I also admit to liking that cool display of stamina of Cap running fast without tiring quickly. It's one of those things Cap always had in his arsenal but isn't as often used. I think the same goes for his fighting ability in that he wouldn't tire for a good long time way past peak human stamina.

This was a curious book. There were things I liked and things I disliked. Probably what I liked most is that it very effectively captured a 60s Lee/Kirby-esque vibe in the last half of the book. It could very easily have been an issue of Cap, or maybe even more accurately an "Invaders" issue from the 70s. The "big robot dude," the commando action, and even the out-of-nowhere romance between Bucky and the resistance girl all scream "Silver Age" to me. And that's not a bad thing.
On the other hand, the epilogue makes it clear that this is a lead-in to events in the main title. The problem for me is that we are asked to segue between two extremely different "feels." In other words, hmmm...how to put it...imagine that you read an issue of the original Invaders (for older fans) and then that issue led directly into an issue of Mr. Brubaker's Captain America. To me, it's very dissimilar and disjointed. They are entirely different styles.
Furthermore, the art was off-putting. I believe they were trying to capture a "Golden-age" feel, but for me it didn't work. I haven't yet seen an example of someone trying to ape a very different style that turned out right.
Just to touch on the "powers" issue, I don't agree with the whole 60mph thing. The fastest human sprinters make a bit less than 30mph, and Cap should better that by a small margin and be able to sustain it longer. So 35-40mph isn't unreasonable. But 60mph? This is giving Cap superpowers, and that is a big mistake.
Most problematic for me, this book can't seem to decide what it wants to be. Is it a Cap/Nick Fury war comic? Is it a Kirby-esque one-shot tribute issue? Is it a lead-in for events in the main title? Of course, some will say "all of the above." However, the book would have been more effective if it had stuck with a theme throughout -- either be a one-shot tribute, or be a war comic, or be a lead-in to the main title in the same style as the main title.
I also question why this story was told in the "65th Anniverysary Special." To me, an anniversary special should be a one-shot, self-containted story. Of course, that isn't graven in stone anywhere. I just don't see any reason why this particular story should not have been told as a flashback in the main title, for example as in V5 Cap #5, the flashback issue to the Eastern Front.
Despite my criticism, it was generally a likeable story, but it was also a "schizophrenic" story.

Just wanted to say that I loved the issue.

Over the years I have read so many Event" and "Anniversary" issues, and they never seem to deliver good stories. Because of that, I wasnt really looking forward to this. I should have remembered that Brubaker writing means great story no matter what.
So this morning I opened it up with zero anticipation, and was just reading it because I know my friend wants to borrow it, and I was blown away.

Cap has always been my favorite book, but before Mr. Brubaker took over I've never had any interest in the WWII era stories or Bucky, but he writes both so well that I would definitley buy a WWII -era book, as long as he wrote it I think.

Loved the realistic depiction of violence in wartime, and loved the Bucky-Fury interaction, and the Bucky romance made me realize what else Bucky lost due to the war. He never got the chance to have a life, since he was like 19 or 20 when he "died".

I also thought the Javier Pulido art was a nice change of pace, and I enjoyed the Perkins pages at the end. Man his art looks like Epting.

Anyway, great book, 9/10, and Cap continues to be in good hands as Brubaker continues to have one of the great runs on Cap. Hopefully its for 50 more issues.

I'm pretty sure this is a new character, as Cap meets her for the first time in this special edition. I think she's been created for this issue, and her presence (or lack, thereof) will be felt in the main title... but perhaps Ed will weigh in.

I am all but 100 % certain that I'd remember Bucky's love interest if we'd seen her before, so I'm with the concensus that she is a Brubaker inserted 'untold tale' retcon character in this issue, but I dispute that she was created 'for' this issue, and here is why...

In Captain America 16 Cap runs into an elderly lady in the AIM-run small town where he and Sharon stay while following the Winter Soldier's trail and trying to intersect with Crossbones along the way. The old woman had a picture behind the lobby desk she was standing at that looked a lot like Gretchen with Bucky, and the woman had the same exact mole that Gretchen, or Blackbird, has, in the picture. He notices the picture, and asked the woman about it, who brushed it off, saying it was the old owner and his wife from the 50's. Later that issue Cap has flashbacks in his dream to a moled girl with a young man, who look liked Gretchen and was definitely Bucky. The flashback pics resembled the girl and boy in the picture, naturally, and as he's woken up Cap again mentions the photo. Before reading the 65th Anniversary Special I assumed it was Bucky with a wartime lost love, but now I have great faith that it was indeed so, and that it is the now identified Gretchen.

Anyone else notice this, or mention it (I went through the earlier posts on this thread and didn't find any)? I think that, if this pans out like I think, it'll be interesting. If it is the case, how do you think that...

Gretchen, an anti-Nazi resistance fighter, would be mixed up in an apparently AIM-run sleeper agent town? A counter-spy? Something else? Is the old woman her? Was she once there? Was Bucky looking for her? I am very curious...

Who was the guy at the end in the car? The one with Red Skull in his head... I forgot his name.

Indeed Cap's peak human isn't like say Bruce's prime with just training. Cap is the peak of human capacity as a new man the world has *never*seen before quote from Doctor. To further evaluate the good Doctor that made the serum also stated. Quote...Cap is the *next* step in human evolution... End of Quote. A pure man from an era were regular men can do his type of feats. Which of course is far ahead of men like Batman.

Some say runing 60mph is powers but I say *no* thats just what a human at maximum capacity can do in the marvel universe of course.

I agree completely, Ronnie... and that's what I was driving at. I haven't had both issues in front of me to flip between at the same time, but I caught the connection and think that's the whole point of the special edition... to establish who this character was to Bucky...and hense, to Cap.
It is my specualation that: the Winter Soldier is either there in town, or WAS there in town, or has threatened AIM to leave his former love's town alone OR ELSE... and they are recruiting Cap to try to back Bucky off or rid them of the Winter Soldier's threat, etc. Or, perhaps the threat is simply Crossbones and Sin tearing up their town and disrupting things. Perhaps it has become a stand-off between them and Bucky...

As for what the Red Skull might be looking for under the castle, well, i should think that's a blank slate for Ed to write upon in the future... but it could be: Doom's time machine.... a possible joint project from Marvel SuperVillian Team-UP (a little help here guys? I've never read them...) or a failed cosmic cube... or the remains of the robot to be brought up to date? or to restore the sleeping robot?
I WANNA KNOW WHO'S BRAIN THAT IS INSIDE THE CHEST CAVITY! That could be important!!!!

As for which order to read this in, I don't think it makes that much difference, but to get the payoff for both the epilogs, I think after issue # 17 or at least #16... and CERTAINLY after #14 so that you can interpret the point of what the last page takes for granted that you already know. (You know...Where the Skull IS.... in Lunkin's head!).

As for Nick Fury not aging, much.... he has taken the Infinity Formula to slow his aging. Capt was frozen with the super soldier serium... Bucky was in a cryotube...periodically... But Dum-Dum... he has suffered a heart attack in an earlier issue of Capt. America drawn by Mick Zeck and at the time, it was thought that he died. Turns out he is in Intensive Care and may have been forced to retire. Anyone else recall this?

How could that have not fit into 2 issues of the New Avengers?

And Cap's 65th Anniversary was special enough to warrant a special book I tell ya! I'm actually quite glad they didn't slap a bunch of reprint material with it... the fact that it was a 64 page original story that dealt with Cap's history AND tied into the current books was, IMO, fantastic.

but! i think Brubaker could've cut short some of the bits with Fury and the Commandos and fit it into the next issue of Cap, and saved us all $4.

Yeah, there's a lot of truth in what you say.
With some reworking, splitting the book at the proper point, this could have filled two issues of Cap, but it made for a nice, self contained story/issue. But if Bendis had written it, maybe three or four issues... and still not resolved what they found under the castle or were looking for....

I'm still thinking that Kronos Corp is looking for Doc Doom's time machine... or another platform... something that explains how his robot got back in time to be burried there... and then, the fun will begin... Time Travel stories anyone?
Can you say, save Bucky again? How about, eliminate the buzz bomb drone plane completely... how about recover Bucky from the ocean in time to not get to save him? Russian technology not withstanding, we couldn't have saved him with that serious a wound! Is that better? Should Cap make this decision?
What will the Skull attempt to do?
WHO"S BRAIN WAS IT INSIDE THE LAME ROBOT???!!!! I think that could be a real plot point. Wait and see....

Just read it last night, and I loved it; it's my favorite comic of the week (of course, I get all my comics a week late).

I think the art fit the story, and I found them both (story and art) to be mighty refreshing. I could read issues upon issues with art like this. Color me impressed.

Gotta be a time-machine, and I was wondering about the brain, too.

How did Dugan's hat stay on his head while jumping out of that airplane?

Is Dum-Dum still working with Fury, who's going underground? If so, why would his superiors ever trust him with anything they don't want Fury to know or have access to?
Has this been adressed? Do you plan to deal with this, Ed?

Or has some of this been set up or explained in that Secret Wars series that i totally missed?
