View Full Version : King Kong DVD question
I know Jackson was supposed to be thinking of doing an Extended Edition of the movie, like he did Lord of the Rings. Is that the two-disc edition out tomorrow or is that later on?

If it follows the LOTR formula, then this is the theatrical release. The LOTR DVD's typically came out around May and then the Director's Cuts came out around November, right before the Holiday's.

Jeebus, wasn't it long enough? Seriously, there were whole subplots that could have easily been excised from the movie and made it much tighter.

Of course, then again, I don't know anyone who didn't think the extended version of Fellowship of the Ring wasn't much brisker and better flowing than the theatrical edition, so this "logic" isn't actually as strong as it tends to seem on the surface.

This should be in the "nurges we must deny" thread

When you see the original Kong and see that you DON'T have to create the movie to be unnecessarily long and plodding, then, yeah, you can see that a longer version isn't necessary at all.
Even surviving THIS sucker in the theatre proves it. Lord of the Rings is a different beast, translated to film from one of the biggest bug-killers ever published.

I loved the 3 hour theatrical version so if an extended version is ever released,I'll definately be getting it.

Yes, I'm going to have to give my reserved agreement. Certainly with your statement on the original, which is genuinely one of the great movies of all time.
I do confess to speaking to soon, however. I watched Jackson's King Kong and it is terrible, a complete disaster. Mind you, I don't think the problem is that it's too long exactly... and some added scenes actually could make some of it work better in places... except that it's so stupendous in its awfulness that every minute takes an eternity.
As the saying goes, "Good movies are never too long and bad movies can never be short enough."
The problem here is that the movie just isn't good. It's a jumble of ideas that don't flow, in fact clash against each other at times, the CGI gives all of the action a certain lack of gravity, the tone of the movie shifts radically at times from very old-style to very modern and almost MTV-like and it makes the ridiculous idea that every sequence needs to be bigger than the original, not one T. Rex but three and he keeps Ann in tow, tossing her from hand-to-hand, while fighting them Kung Fu style.
Please!

VERY true! I saw "Ben-Hur" for the first time during the Christmas holidays, a few weeks before I saw "Kong". It was a LONG movie, but I came away having really enjoyed it. Just a very well made film.
Your point makes sense, if you don't like the movie, it being longer isn't necessarily the problem (though the length seems magnified). It's the movie itself.

I think it might have been a few minutes too long, but I would have cut some material from the first hour. I thought the movie felt slow during the trip to Skull Island, but once the boat actually got there, the action shifted into high-gear!
For its flaws, I did come away from Jackson's King Kong immensely satisfied. And I don't think I was alone; when I collected my coat from the back of the seat, I saw a woman, mid-twenties, in a seat behind me, crying.
What didn't quite work: the Heart of Darkness comparisons. Too heavy-handed.
What did work: the dinosaurs(beat Jurassic Park all hollow!), Kong's reactions to Ann Darrow, the human performances in general and Jack Black in particular(who would have thunk he had it in him?).
Favorite moments: Kong and Ann looking at the sunrise on Skull Island, and just before the climb up the Empire State Building when they were sliding around on the frozen pond in Central Park. It was fun to see Kong having fun, and Ann laughing with him, before the Army started blowing things up again! :evilangry
All in all, a ride I plan to take again and again! In other words, yes I will own the DVD after payday!
