Can anyone tell me where Gilgamesh appeared prior to joing the Avengers? I only have his Avengers appearances and I'd liek to read more on him. Are there any internet links that would tell me more about him?
I know a lot of people would rather forget he was ever an Avenger so please don't derail the thread with your distaste for the Forgotten One.

Who? Never heard of him! :D (Sorry, I couldn't resist!)
As for his background, he had never appeared in a Marvel comic to my knowledge, prior to his appearance in the Avengers. Nobody seemed to question his appearance at the time, though the fans were puzzled a bit to say the lease. (Perhaps this was the first attempt at "forgotten history" that we have now seen used in The Sentry, Kulan Goth, Age of Apololips, and Marvel: The Lost Generation.)
I believe that he was a figure from some other pantheon... and was introduced as an attempt to introduce that history or set of gods into the Marvel Universe... but I would read the letter pages immediately following his appearance to see just what the creators of the time told us, first hand.
Hope this helps.
And, for the record, I don't think he's been used again since...

He was an Eternal. He appeared in THE ETERNALS and THOR before his Avengers stint.
This (http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix2/gilgamesh.htm) should cover pretty much everything.

Dude you hit it out of the ballpark this site looks awesome. Thank you. This has every appearance. So sweet.
Does anyone know with the new Eternals series coming out if they will release a classic TPB of the original series?

They're releasing an oversized hardcover, but I haven't heard anything about a trade paperback.
