I'd just like to shout out and say how much I appreciate the Aussies on the board.

I love their sense of humor, their wit, their uncanny disection of American thought and culture, and most importantly, their love for the comic art form.

and all of them make CBR a better place.

I've yet to meet and Aussie online I didn't like. :D

I know there have been at least two in Australia (needed to send Spike's Christmas presents in boxes).

For all I know, some dude in the outback could be remaking "The Gods Must Be Crazy" with one of them as we speak.

Of course, in a few years time we'll be formally changing Brissy's name to Bris Vegas.

Do they have port casks or is it just shit like shiraz & merlot?

Yeah but port only comes in the dinky little 1 and 2 litre casks (Americans: a litre is around a fifth).

You can get some surprisingly good reds in the 4 and 5 litre sizes. (5 litres is around a gallon and you can buy a gallon of wine for around US$10-12.)

Much cheaper and you'd use it to wash the car.

Actually, about 1/8 of all Americans were criminals that Britian sent. Alot of countries were originally used as penal colonies.

Oh shush, next you'll be mentioning that most of the Australian convicts were Scots and Irish pushed off their land as a direct result of British government policy and transported for vagrancy-related offences that would have gotten English offenders a week in the work-house.

Or that the free settlers during the gold rush outnumbered the convicts byabout 10 to 1.

That said, In Douglas Adams 'Salmon of Doubt' he mentions going for a walk in the British country side and coming across a bridge that still had a sign stating that vandalism would be punished with deportation to Australia.

He also points out what a bizarre punishment it was.
If you broke the law you had to leave the cold, rainy, crowded country of England, and hang out in warm, open Australia.
And if you were naughty at the Sydney colony, they sent you to QLD, so you could get some more sun, and work on your surfing.

I don't remember what the sauce was, actually.

This was probably three years ago now, back when I was a taxi driver. I was near the end of a Sunday night shift, about 3am, and a passenger offered me a slice of his pizza. Chicken and prawn (from Kardinia Cafe). It was delicious.

Well between a third and half of the convicts in the early days didn't survive the voyage out.

The main difference between the convict ships and contemporaneous slave ships was the trip to Australia was 2-3 times as long so they gave the prisoners on the convict ships an extra six inches of bunk space.

Frank Hardy once commented that Australians celebrating the arrival of the first fleet is like Jews celebrating the arrival of the first trains at Auschwitz.

It is done on a state by state basis. I am not sure about the laws mentioned for Queensland but here in Western Australia prostitution is illegal, but brothels are ignored (effectively making only street/suburban prostitution illegal) and I think that they have just started taxing prostitutes, showing exactly where govt priorities lie :)

I saw that in the Yellow Pages while I lived in Australia (Victoria) but I assumed it was the usual American-type escorts (ala The Wedding Date).

Dingo:

That type of thing I like. That way the prostitutes aren't on the streets risking their lives and are less likely to get SPD's etc.

Canberra, the Federal Capital of Australia (no, not Sydney, Canberra! CANBERRA!) has legal brothels juuuuust outside the Parliamentary triangle in the nearest industrial district: we're talking less than ten kilometres from Parliament House. Rules for the Australian Capital Territory is that there are to be no brothels or prostitution in the residential suburbs.

Speaking of Aussies and the Australian Capital Territory:

civil unions for same sex couples to go ahead in the ACT. (http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,18630005-421,00.html)

I thought the interesting bit was that the ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said that "civil union as proposed for ACT law would not impact on the definition of marriage within the Commonwealth Marriage Act which applies throughout the country.

He said legal advice was that the states and territories could not legislate for actual marriage and the ACT had not sought to do so."

I wasn't aware the Commonwealth Marriage Act was so binding. That means it can only be overriden by Referrendum, right?

This kiwi bloke moves to Australia and he keeps getting people making fun of his accent. Anyway, this one time, he walks into a fish 'n' chip shop and says, "Sux bucks worth of fush an' chups."
Dude behind the counter says, "Ah, I can see y'r a kiwi," and has a bit of a giggle behind his hand.
The kiwi decides enough is enough and storms out, determined that nobody will laugh at his accent again.
For months, he practices and practices, until his accent is perfect, finally, he walks in, bangs his money down on the counter and says proudly, "I'll have six dollars worth of fish and chips, thanks!"
The dude behind the counter says, "Ah, I can see you're a kiwi..."
The kiwi is gobsmacked! "How?" he chokes, "My accent, it was perfect..."
"Yeah," replies the bloke behind the counter, "But this has been a locksmiths for the last three months."

And they use the same insults for us.

So anyway, here's a really dumb old gag.

Well here's a dirtier joke about tasmanians so I'll try do that spoiler thing so the kiddies don't see it...
Q: How does a Tasmanian know when his mum's on the rags?
A: His brothers dick tastes different.

Not classy like Pol's, but it made me laugh when I first heard it.

I did not know that.

Don't worry we won't actually have any uranium to sell them for the better part of a decade anyway.

This is mainly a stunt aimed at getting support for an equally meaningless symbolic agreement to sell uranium to India.

See that way Howard gets to be Bush's lap-dog AND gets to embarass the Opposition Labor Party which opposes more urnaium mines.

Yeah, a business which for much of the time in question was OWNED by them.

But no Minister (not even the one responsible for the company that spent $300 million on bribes) had any idea what was going on.

Just because the intelligence agencies told them; the UN told them; Department of Foreign Affairs told them and AWB has produced minutes of meetings where Ministers were present and the bribes were discussed doesn't prove a thing.

I go to comics etc alot and ace comics in the Queen Street mall. I go to these stores to pick up comics I feel like trying out for the first time, pick up any back issues and any TPBs. I order my pull list from a guy who used to have a store, but now orders comics for about 20 of his customers that had accounts at his store. We all meet every 2 weeks to pick up our orders. <CUTS OUT THE RUDENESS BIT! OOH! MY TINY EARS!> Did somebody mention wankers?

My favourite use of that particular word was when the WWE did a tour, Chris Jericho, my favourite wrestler was a heel (bad guy) at the time and the crowd were doing the usual "Jericho's a wanker!" chants.
He looked around at the crowd and said, "Well, I don't know what that means, but if I'm one, it must be pretty good."
He strutted around with his chest all puffed out and told people that he was a wanker proudly.

Twelve months later, there's another tour and the crowd starts with the "wanker" chant again.
He grabs the microphone and yells, "Hey! I looked that word up! And I'm not! I mean... How Dare You!" and had a big tantrum.

There's not many folks'd wait a year for a payoff like that.

Ah. This is no doubt why everyone in the US Navy drools at the thought of visiting Australia.

Well, that and the fact that Aussie women are apparently very attractive.

õ
Or so I've heard!

As a complementary remark, we get quite a few people in the store whenever the Navy's in town (apparently, there's a substantial geek population in the armed services).
Almost without exception, they've been pleasant, enthusiastic, happy and extremely friendly and well-mannered.

And they usually spend shitloads of cash.
Which I ALWAYS appreciate.

And if the answer is "huh?", when are you both looking to be online at the same again? :evilsmile

I went to a store in Brisbane city which was the second story of a building, you went up a small staircase to get to the entrance
Was that Ace Comics? If not what shop was that?

That was us.

Those stairs are probably the only thing standing between half the Brisbane geek community and massive coronaries.

Seeing as there are several Bribsane people here, does anyone have the new address or phone number for Clayton's Comics?

I actually got an SMS from Terry (who works there) today - he said the store's now across the road from the Chermside Westfield.

Oh, I love Ace Comics. They may be hard to get to (I nearly fell down those stairs one time... xD), but they have heaps of stuff.

Edit: Gosh, sorry for the, like, triple post. How do I delete posts here?

Do you know if he's changed his e-mail recently?

I really need to talk to him.

Sorry, I don't know him personally... I'm just the girl that casts him shy glances whenever I go there. :(

I believe that has been proven scientifically.

Oh yeah. When my brother was on shore leave in the 90s, he and his buddies would hit every gaming/comic shop they could find and spend every cent on MTG cards.

That's always nice - but the stuff I remember is like the guy back in about '99 who borrowed our phone to get word about his new baby.

All naval personnel are nuts for dice. It's like they keep losing them overboard or something. They all want new dice sets for D&D.

It would be so cool to visit Australia, but plane tickets are so incredibly expensive.

I totally don't blame you. Just for fun I checked out the prices, I was blown away. Too steep.

I came close a couple of years ago, got the money to get over, but if I did, it'd leave me with nothing to spend once I get there.
I had a bunch of folks offer to put me up and pay for food and stuff, but I didn't want to be thinking about how much I owe people every time I eat a sammich.

Instead, you get to think about SuperNova Brisbane this weekend! Dees was practically half empty this afternoon; she's boxed everything up and sent it on ahead, and will be following tomorrow. So there will be a Canberra connection on the convention floor!

Oh yeah, I'll be all over Supanova.
Anyone who's gonna be there, swing by Ace Comics & Games and say howdy.
If you REALLY feel up to it, buy me a can of overcaffeinated fizz water. 'V's my favourite, but why quibble? I'll be so sleep deprived, I'll drink anything!

Hey, "shout-out" to fellow Aussie Pol Rua for all his help yesterday with an article I'm writing about the comics industry. He chatted with me on the phone for an hour while he minded the store, and it was all really informative.
Thanks, Pol!
