I'm going to the Zoo!

I'm writing this because during my lunch breaks at work (right now actually), I have bookmarked on my computer the page from the Animal Web Cams at the National Zoo in Washington DC. To calm myself down from work, I look at the animals eat, swim, and just be animals. So I thought I would take a trip to the Los Angeles Zoo this weekend.

I haven't to the zoo since I was 8. I'm going for the lions and going to purchase one of those plastic animals from the machines for old time sake.

I've only been to a couple of zoos but the monkeys are always cool!

I remember going to Edinburgh Zoo back in '88 and seeing some sort of gibbons and they had massive noses and were running about nuts!

I was scared shitless in the reptile house though! The sight of giant cobras hissing at me has haunted me ever since!

When I worked in Glendale, I used to go over to the LA Zoo and have lunch with the gorillas at least once or twice a month. Caesar is a very cool gorilla. His son Marcus is the same age as my oldest daughter. They used to have their bottles together in the nursery, sitting on either side of the glass. Marcus used to get very excited that Ash drank the same brand of formula as his.

The great apes are always the best part of the zoo. Though for pure entertainment, you have to stop by the giraffe enclosure and watch the relentlessly horny male get repeatedly dissed by the two females.

I used to go to the Asheboro Zoo a lot as a kid, mostly for school & summer camp field trips. I haven't been back since about 1996 or 1997; it's a several hour drive. I remember it being hot as hell on those trips, but it was worth it to see a lot of the open-air exhibits (like the elephants & giraffes).

The Little Rock Zoo has a lot of River Otters, notably Willie. Willie is awesome.

The L.R. Zoo is really cool though. They've come a long way in the last couple of years and are working on getting African Penguins.

Snakes, I'm afraid.

I dig the other stuff, but I really enjoyed seeing them feed the snakes. It freaked us all out, which was fun.

I said "I'm afraid," because snakes don't seem like a zoo attraction, to me. But they were there, so I guess they qualify.


We got a bunch of great pix at Zoo Atlanta and the Georgia Aquarium. I really dig both.

Yes, several zoos have supervised shows in which patrons are allowed to interact with tarantulas.
