View Full Version : Wow, the OYL books are flying off the shelves

Are REALLY flying off the shelves. I stopped in during my lunch hour today to get some comics, and man are the OYL books just flying off the shelf. Last week I missed Nightwing #118, this week Catwoman #53 and Manhunter #20 were completely sold out, and I got the very last issues of Robin and Hawkgirl. Hopefully DC goes back to press on the three I missed out and I can grab them down the line. On a side note, Black Panther #14 had one copy left, so X-fans must be picking that up due to Storm, Squadron Supreme #1 looked to be doing ok sales, which were partly inflated due to a Variant, and either New Avengers #17 had a variant, or not so many people are buying it at my store cause they had a TON, a TON of copies left. I was shocked how many copies they had left, so either they over ordered or people in my LCS are not buying it.

My local comic shop never has extras of anything, so I'm lucky if I can scope out any books not on my pull list after Wednesday.
I noticed that there are a few OYL books on the shelves from time to time, but they don't really stay there for long (as opposed to the inevitable backstock of stuff that gets overordered, like the Superman/Captain Marvel mini).

Yeah, that Superman/CM mini appeared like it was WAY over ordered, same for Superman/Batman and Astonishing X-Men at my store. I would LOVE to get my comics on Wed. like others, but my schedule doesnt work out for that and I never know when they get their comics either. Before they have gotten them as early as noon, other times it isnt until 6 at night.

With the exception of Nightwing and Outsiders I've been pretty pleased with all the OYL books I’ve read. Both recent issues of Robin and Adventures of Superman have been the best reads I've seen in years for both of those respective books. The only one year book I’m indifferent of is Birds of Prey but that’s just because I don’t have any clue who the new characters are besides Shiva. I’m sure I’ll love the book once I am familiar with the invisible chick and the crime doctor.

Basing what you see in one store does not make this a viable assumption.
What you are seeing is based on some intangable elements. First off,What did the CBS owner ORDER? The amounts? To say there were alot of New Avengers is nothing new,as it is a consistant top ten seller, thus owners will ORDER MORE than lets say the next issue of Manhunter or Nightwing, even with OYL going on. Second off,not all comic stores GET the variants,or do NOT order enough from Diamond to be worthy of the variants. Third,You DO have to consider the fact that OYL,along with the Storm/Black Panther events, just that..EVENTS. They will NOT substain the books in the long run. They are there as jump-in points to show new readers what they are missing and to give long time readers a treat.
Your opinions(and remember, thats all this is)seem to be more geared toward yet another round of DC vs. Marvel, and that the only way Marvel is having sales is due to events or variants, and if they are not, they will have a TON of issues left(as you point out in New Avengers). IF this IS NOT what you wanted to convey,i just wish to point out that after reading your post, that is the tone that i got from it. It felt inflated by your personal views(not a BAD thing). You like DC. You like OYL. But you then drag Marvel into the mix, give a couple of examples of their books with luke-warm responses at best, state variants as a factor at least twice and then make a assumption(which may be true either way, many stores over-order certain books, and some books do not get the auidence they have in other stores or regions).
My point,after all of this?
You like OYL. Great! Glad you like them! I like some of them myself.
Bashing either Marvel or DC comics, turning into a Marvel vs DC/DC vs Marvel,or even suggesting that is not so great. Why? Because it just really REALLY easy to make this into a flame war. And there are NO winners in one of those..just endless posts, many of which will go off in tangets and pinpoint little bits and ultimately NO ONE sees EYE to EYE on everything.
Remember, this is my opinion. I do not even suggest that you even AGREE with me on this. Just be knowledgable about it and remember that actions have consequences. I am hoping no one turns this into a flame war,as i am NOT bashing your opinions, and agree with some of them. My main concern is how you presented your facts and how you made assumptions(and as i pointed out, your assumptions may be 100% on the mark). It is quite possible that New Avengers outsold every OYL DC title your CBS orders, but the same shop may of ordered extra DUE to this large sell-thru. It happens. The best thing to do is to ENJOY what you like, and praise what you do like.
Me? I like OYL somewhat. I am looking forward to Civil War. I am getting a little bit weary of Infinite Crisis(it feels neverending now...),and i have and still enjoying Supreme Power/Squadron Supreme. I did NOT buy any variants this month. And i am NOT looking forward to the marriage of T'challa to Ororo. It feels,in my opinion, stunt driven. Then again,i may enjoy it after the fact.

I wasnt trying to start a big DC vs. Marvel thing, it was more a post that I was ticked off slightly that I missed out on some comics I wanted. And I also realize that my comic shop isnt the only one around, heck X-Men is one of the stores lower selling titles compared to books like X-Factor and the such. And I do think a lot of Marvel's top books are being geared sales wise by variants and events, but I said the same thing about DC when everything had Crisis tie-ins. I mean, I enjoyed Ms. Marvel #1, but lets face it chances are orders would have been lower if it didnt have a Mike Turner variant cover, and my store DID get those. It isnt a DC vs. Marvel thing at all, I think both create good comics equally. Though I will admit I may be bias about New Avengers, I just stopped buying it last month due to the complete WASTE of 9 pages by Bendis, I dont like paying 2.50 on a college students salary to get 9 pages of splash pages, no matter who drew the thing. That said I flipped through #17 and it looked much better than last month....I might get it at a later time.

Cam, whenever you walk into your pub, everyone calls out "NORM!!!" and the barkeep hands you your usual. You never even get your drunk ass off of the stool, so my question is this: Have you ever ordered a fridge filled with comics?
Didn't think so.

I usually have to duck a barstool thrown my way and serve my own beer after I push the dead/unconscious bartender out of the way.

Nice to know that you aren't going to let a little thing like the death of your fellow human being keep you from your alcohol.
