View Full Version : Exiles #78, with spoilers, of course

The Exiles are on trial. Hyperion's recollection of them is somewhat jaded and the Squadron Supreme's views of them vary from undecided to hostile. Nighthawk is judging the case. Things are not going so well with Morph's testimony (not his fault -- the worlds the Exiles visited never asked for their help, etc.). Heather is trying to beam them out but Dr. Spectrum is preventing that from happening. She can see what is going on, but can't interfere.
The bugs give her an idea. She has an interface with the team. No, not the Talus. The Timebroker. So she sends him down to be the "attorney" for the team. First, Heather has found out the recent history of the Squadron and reveals it to the Exiles (via some kind of mental process). Using that same process, she informs the Squadron of who the Exiles are and what they have been up to. The Squadron believes what they are told. Then Healther gives them the kicker. The World Government, who is out to get the Squadron, got into power through fraud. The Squadron had always assumed that they had been properly elected. But that is not the case and the Exiles provide them with the evidence.
It appears that Proteus has left the Squadron's Earth and Hyperion offers to join them in taking him down. But Power Princess argues that the world needs Hyperion, but it might be able to get along without her for a while. So the Exiles have a new member.
Thoughts?

Sounds pretty good to me. Power Princess fills a needed slot and adds an interesting alternative viewpoint to the mix.

Since Namora was killed, we've needed someone for the haughy strong woman role.<g> And since Mimic died, we don't really have a super strong character.

I'm glad we got the Timebroker back. I'm really getting tired of seeing all those little bugs. Hopefully they never peer back into the "Crystal place" again, and leave the Timebroker as an ominous being.

Good issue. Wish they would have ported in Beak temporarily to speak on his friends behalf. Would have been amusing to see Barnell getting snatched from 616 again shouting about... "Not again!" only to find out they just needed him as a character witness about the Exiles. :)

Anyone else notice Morph's little Rorschach moment towards the end?
Good issue. Okay. Longshot, Zarda, Spiderman 2099. How long are these new members gonna last?

No clue. The head X-Men books editor has made a few comments about what characters are going to stick around when Claremont's run on the title starts.
Blink, Morph, and Sabretooth.
Other than them, no clue on the recently introduced characters. I'm hoping they stick around at least for an issue or two, since I'd love to see CC write some non-X-based characters.

Good issue. It started out shaky for me but towards the end it became an enjoyable read.
And who is Power Princess?

Squadron Supreme member. Basically Marvel's version of Wonder Woman. :)

that's a good point.. i wonder if he will bring in non-X characters at all! that's always been the fun part about Exiles (which is why people don't like Blink and Sabretooth in the same book)

I am wonderin if the last person in the spoiler list is who we think it is considering who else maybe joining in the future...

I re-read the book last week and I was wondering -- What happened to Proteus. It appears that he's left the Squadron's Earth because it appears that the Exiles are leaving. But why? I thought his intention was to take over Hyperion's body (not that it would be superior to Hulk 2099's for Proteus's purpose, but hey, maybe he wants to look like a Greek God).

Nah I thought he just wanted to trick the Exiles into a fight with Hyperion, I dont he went there to further his own agenda besides that
On another note whos doing art for the next arc? And where are they going next again?

Good stuff. I liked the flashbacks. It struck a chord in me because I just picked up a bunch of Exiles tpbs. I wish we could have seen more from Longshot in this issue, but it was pretty good overall. I'm not familiar with the Squadron Supreme (my loss), but I like them from what I have seen in this book. I wonder if Zarda (I don't much care for her codename) will stay on the team when Claremont comes on board. Claremont does like the strong, female type characters, and Zarda certainly seems to fit that category.

If that were the case, he should have sicced the evil Hyperion on them. That would have slowed them up (possibly fatally) and there would be chance of the "misunderstanding" being cleared up.

Our League exists to serve Justice."

And did you notice the small pic of their headquarters? Excellent little Superfriends Hall of Justice replica!
I loved all of the tiny little jokes they threw in mocking the similarities.
As for Claremont, when's he taking over? This is the first I heard of it, and it makes me nervous. The way he's been sucking on the X-men lately isn't a good sign. They should get a talented writer like BKV, Robert Kirkman, or (my personal choice) Sean McKeever to take over when Bedard leaves.

i like your choices. maybe not Robert Kirkman because he's already on MTU. Claremont makes me nervous as well, and i'm worried it'll become a reality-hopping Excalibur or something

i'm worried and hoping that the ties to Excalibur will be quite light , and not filling the book for like 8 consecutive issues ..
But oh well if the book sucks , just drop it for the Thing , and even if it doesnt sucks , you should get the Thing anyway .

It's a good theory, except (spoilers for Carey's X-Men run) Carey is planning on having the 616 Sabretooth on his team, so he probably couldn't be in the X-Men too. But you're right, it may cause Psylocke some sleepless nights, wondering if the AoA version will revert to type.

He's taking over after the World Tour finishes and they have their memorial issue. I certainly don't think he's been sucking, his UXM is still entertaining, but I'm unsure of him on Exiles... the addition of 616 Psylocke already makes me nervous, since it means at least one of the new recruits (Longshot, S-Man 2099, Power Princess) will probably make way for her (since we know that Blink, Morph, and Sabretooth are all sticking around). We'll see how it all plays out, but if Longshot goes, I may too.

-DYeah, I raied an eyebrow when I heard this news. If it was up to me, I wish Bedard would have continued on Exiles, and I wish Claremont would have started a completely new X-Men concept. Well, actually I would still have Claremont on UXM, but whatever.

If it was up to me, Winick would still be writing Exiles. Still, I'll miss Bedard. He did some weird things and introduced some unpopular characters (e.g. Beak, Namora, and Sabertooth - why's he still there?), but at least he kept the plot interesting...
I still think Sean McKeever is a perfect fit. One of the things that makes Exiles so enjoyable is that it's just a classic "fun" comic book. McKeever captured that feel really well in his Gravity series.
Claremont is still applying 1970s writing to a medium that's matured by 30 years. It worked well then. Now... not so much.

Seconded , while Bedard handled the serie beautifully it doesnt live up to the WInnick era , and i cant help feeling that the Timebroker revelation might have been better with him onboard .

Kind of a slow issue, but still decent.
I too will miss Bedard, but am excited to see what CC is going to do!
