I listen to songs in German , Assyrian and Arabic because I like the music but I don’t understand what the hell the performers are saying. I was just wondering if I was alone in listing to music that I don’t understand.

I like Rammstein (German), Nightwish (some Finnish songs) plus some classical music like Andrea Bocelli who mostly sings in his native Italian. Even some songs in Scottish Gaelic are quite nice.

Yes, I do but I voted that you are weird because...well you are ;)
Do they count though if I understand the other language?

The nice thing about Ramstien is that a lot of their lyrics are in English so you get an idea what they are saying. Also since they are such a popular band in America all of their stuff is translated on the internet.

My girlfriend listens to songs in Spanish and French, at least. There may be more (other than English). She speaks Spanish pretty well, but I don't think she knows French.
Anyway, I listen to stuff she's played for me or around me, but I don't seek it out (except for a cd she made for me).
Really, I guess it's not all that different from digging most Reggae, at least for those who don't understand that particular patois.

I'm big into Buena Vista Social club, and I have NO IDEA what they are on about. Still great tunes with a great vibe though.

No idea what they're saying, but I love their music.
Um, they sing in French, in case that wasn't obvious.

I love a variety of spanish/hispanic music, but when I listen to it, my brain treats the words as sounds rather than words--I'm not concerned with the lyrics, but the euphony (and, to a greater extent, the rhythm)--it just sounds so f'in great sometimes.
Also, I *adore* Edith Piaf, even though I don't speak French. When I hear her sing, though, I almost feel like I understand it.
And I dig opera but, again, it's more for the sound/emotion rather than the content.

Asian Kung-Fu Generation.
Awesome band. Seriously, I got the album because of the name, but this is some intense rock and roll.
And no, I have no idea what they are writing about.

That's how I am with pretty much all music - even if it's in English.
Hell, there are PLENTY of times I have no CLUE what the hell the artist is saying, despite the fact that it's supposedly in English, but I dig the hell out of the tune. Stevie Wonder's just one of many whose lyrics often elude me.
I have frigged up MANY of his songs, I'm afraid.

some of my favorite chill out tunes are in languages other than English, i can even sing some of them word for word, of course i have absolutely no idea what i'm singing (except for the Girl from Ipenema where the song is sung first in Portugese then in English)

I just heard it in a movie last night. Next Stop Wonderland. Awesome Brazilian soundtrack.

Which is better, that or Mas Que Nada?

I used to for awhile, but then I got burned too many times by finding out what the lyrics meant later and then hating myself for liking a song with lyrics I totally disagreed with.

Oh, fuck. I like that one a lot, too.
"Mas Que Nada," depending on the version, makes me dance in my seat more, but I probably get more into singing along to various renditions of "The Girl From Ipanema."
And by "get into," I mean "singing badly, but with lots of force."
Oh! And when Dean Martin sings in Italian, I melt a little.

I really dig Ozomatli, who sing their songs in Portugese, Spanish and in English. A local band Babaloo does the same, but I think they throw in another language to boot. Not that I understand any of it, but the music is tight which is all I care about.
My girlfriend (who is bi-lingual, speaks Spanish) listens to a lot more which by proxy means that I do as well. Band called Manu Chao makes some lovely music, tho I dearly wish I knew what they were singing about.
More now than ever do I regret taking French instead of Spanish in high school.

I don't actively seek them out, but I love the rock singer Doro Pesch, who's German, and at least one song on every album of hers is in German.

Another Rammstein fan here. However, I have ventured out and gotten translations, and they're not that hard to sing along with either.

Hell, I can't understand most of the music in my own language. When is someone going to tell some of these singers not to eat the microphone.
I voted for weird, but well, that's another story.
I've listened to some opera. I'm not really a fan, and I know nothing about it, but I like what I hear.

Yes, but mostly in languages I know. I like a few scattered songs in languages I don't understand at all -- I went through a bhangra phase a few years ago, and I think I spent about a year listening to Ashley MacIsaac's "Sleepy Maggie," which is in Gaelic -- but almost all of my non-English listening is pop music in Portuguese or Spanish. I love some old school Brazilian Tropicalismo stuff, especially Caetano Veloso, and some newer things, too -- Legião Urbana's "Quando O Sol Bater Na Janela Do Teu Quarto" is one of my favorite songs of all time.
I enjoy Shonen Knife's Japanese songs, but find their English stuff much more entertaining. Let's Knife would probably be one of my Desert Island Discs.
I like stuff I can sing along to in the car, and it's a lot easier when it's a language I understand. Although it's also fun to bellow along more or less phonetically to something like "99 Luftballons." :D

They are magnificent, aren't they?
Spanish (BVSC and others), Finnish (Finntroll), Japanese (Geinoh Yamashirogumi), Latin (choirs), Gaelic (don't remember who), German (Pale 3), and that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Yes. I don't own any of their CD's, but I like Rammstein. E Nomine is another really good German group, but sadly very few people have heard of them. I've also got a small amount of J-pop.

I don't understand German either, but almost every rock group from that country sounds like their songs are about marching on the Polish frontier.
I like J-pop and old school French ye-ye, primarily female singers, but I'll listen to almost any pleasant voiced female pop singer in any language.

I don't understand German either, but almost every rock group from that country sounds like their songs are about marching on the Polish frontier.Yeah, I remember that from the original Live-Aid concert - they had some German supergroup (a la USA for Africa) doing a fundraising song, and everybody made similar comments about it. About the only thing I can think of that doesn't sound like that is the German version of "She Loves You" that the Beatles did.
As for me, I've got a bunch of Spanish-language tunes - Los Lobos, Cruzados, stuff like that. And I'm playing Seu Jorge's Portugese version of "Rebel Rebel" right now.

Big Warren Zevon fan, and there's no way the fact I can't speak the lingo will stop me enjoying 'Laissez-moi Tranquille' and 'L'Amour De Mi Vida'.
yes, but only, mostly, Shakira.

Yeah, mostly Japanese. I also take choir and solo singing college classes that tend to involve lots of songs from dead white Europeans of various countries.
