I got Born in the U.S.A and liked it and today while cruising a normally shit-tacular music store I found the three disc Essential Bruce Springsteen for fifteen bucks which seems pretty good.
What record should I get next?Whats the real standout point in the Springsteen catalouge?

Whats the real standout point in the Springsteen catalouge? It's gotta be Born to Run, followed by Darkness on the Edge of Town.

My own private bare bones must-have Springsteen:
1. Tunnel of Love
2. Human Touch
3. The Ghost of Tom Joad
These cut to the heart and soul of Bruce's sensibilities as an artist and include some of his most accomplished and mature recordings.
&
4. Tracks, a four disc treasure chest, worth its weight in gold.

Agreed here.
Although it may seem expensive, shell out the extra cash for the Born To Run 30th Anniversary box set (with fries). You not only get the album remastered, but a live concert DVD from 1975 that will blow your head off.

Oh, and once you're well and truly hooked, PM me and I'll sling a few of the better bootlegs your way.

Wow thanks. That's very nice of you.
I'm flying to England in five days so I'll have lots of time to kill listening to music on the plane.

Have you ever had Howyadoin and the other guys listen to the live version of Backstreets from '77?
Bruce had not quite worked out the break in the middle of the song that would become known as Sad Eyes on the Darkness tour, and his story of feeling betrayed and abandoned was longer and, incredible as it may seen, even more emotional...
I wished God would send some angels
and blow this old town into the sea
yeah I wished God would send some angels
and blow us all away...

Not yet. I did send howy the ultimate version from Winterland earlier tonight. I do like the March 25, 1977 version you quoted - I'd rate that probably a close second after Winterland.

This all sounds awesome. Those lyrics cut to the bone. iS that in the live version of "Backstreets"? That's one of my favorite songs. I'd also recommend his first two albums-genuis work. Loose as a goose, but oh-so-cool.

Yeah, that's the version he was doing in early '77.

Damn, that strikes me as an almost impossible task based on the quality of his live performance

True. Even if you limit it to one or two shows per tour, there's always plenty of heated discussion about which two are the best. Even in terms of sound quality - there are five very good-excellent quality radio broadcasts just from the Darkness tour, and four of those are considered "must-have" shows.
