Buried mentioned this a couple of threads down but it had not escaped my notice. Geoff Johns turned Kal-L, Alex Luthor and Superboy Prime into Parallax. In other words he turned to versions of Superman, including the original version into cackling deluded baddies.

Way to go, Mr Johns.

But don't blame him. Blame me too. And also Buried to a lesser extent.

Lets go back about seven years.

Buried had a thread about "How would you bring back the Earth-two Superman from his paradise dimension". It was a writing contest and somehow I won it. Cei-U (a poster who is an artist) thought it was so good he wanted to draw it if I wanted to write it. I said yes. Buried Alien wanted in as well, so the three of us were going to bring back Kal-L.

This was all very public as was the growth of the plot.

Somewhere Geoff Johns was watching and taking notes. "Bring back Kal-L...Hmmm."

It came out that saving an ailing Lois Lane was part of the story.

Somewhere Geoff Johns was watching and taking notes. "Superman strives to save an endangered Lois Lane....Hmmmm".

Cut to several years later...

Johns is writing Flash and everyone loves him except for me. I started a thread attacking Johns for the mass slaughter of civilians that occurred in each issue. Flash is supposed to be a hero, I insisted, heroes are supposed to keep the mass slaughter down.

My main target was the villain Cicada who could sense a powerful Flash aura on anyone Flash had touched. Cidada harvested that residual Flash energy by slaughtering the people. So anyone Flash touched, dated, saved was a target. There were so many dead victims that they had to open up auditoriums to stack them.

To me this was ridiculous, and it made a laughingstock out of any claim to heroism by Wally West. It turned him into a public menace.

The thread blew up and spawned other threads, especially since Geoff Johns was posting like crazy all over the thread. He wanted to spread the word that from now on everything had to be ultraviolent.

Then he surprised us with his take on Grodd the Gorilla. A new Grodd obsessed with eating humans and always gurgling up a bloody froth, for some strange reason.

What I'm trying to say is that Infinite Crisis is Geoff John's revenge on me for taunting him about his 'Flash-proof Guillotines' and his bloody-mouthed Grodds. Kal-L walking around nostalgic about the good old Earth where evil was controlled, not let to run wild. John's is using the IC to rub it in our noses we that wanted a lower body count in comic books. Kal-L is a villain here, really, just another well-meaning Parallax.

And Zero Hour sucked too. Johns is ripping off things that suck.

Oh my God what did I say?

Johns is ripping me off, too. That means I suck too!

darn you, fly, why did you have to go and give Geoff Johns ideas like that? Why couldn't you reserve your idea giving for someone who needs original ones, like say, Judd Winnick?

Geoff Johns (and Rucka, Winnick, and DiDio, to some extent) have turned themselves into Parallax. They dislike the way the universe is going, think it's dark and terrible, so they decide to mess it up a bit, tear it down, and rebuild it to their liking.

The only I'm unsure of at this point is if we should hold Geoff Johns accountable, ala Hal, or if we should look to Morrison's theory that the DCU is a sapient being, and blame it for possesses Johns, ala Hal.

I, personally, blame the writer, but then have have a weakspot for new, parasitic lifeforms.

You know, years ago, I once posted a message on a comics forum like this one that they should bring back Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps.

And, eerily enough, several years later Geoff Johns did that very thing.

COINCIDENCE, I ASK?

My favorite moment in a Doctor Who behind the scenes book, where head writer Terrance Dicks attempted to account for who on the writing staff had the idea to do "The Three Doctors." It was almost laughable, because imagine: an episode featuring all three doctors is such an obvious story to do that really, it's absurd to say any single person had the idea first.

Welcome back, fly. If you left. I haven't seen you around, at any rate. And that was great.

I guess this means that we should revoke Johns's internet connection. Or make sure he's always connected, if he doesn't have broadband. It's definitely one of those two things.

Once, I posted on a message board that it'd be cool if Hal Jordan punched a guy in the face.

And he did!

One time I said it'd be cool if that guy from the Real World came into comics and wrote some kickass GL and Green Arrow!

...Still waiting on that one.

Er... I was kidding. My post was referencing the horrible comic work of Judd Winick, who really only belongs on books like Barry Ween.

Thank you for what has been the most fulfilling year of comic collecting in my entire life. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the inspiration.

I believe in a Multiverse where these so-called "fictions" are reality. The question is, does the writer shape these things or do these things shape the writer. Perhaps you all glimpsed the true happenings of this Infinite Crisis or perhaps you and Geoff Johns have put our universe in danger of being destroyed by creating a Multiverse catastrophe. I am currently trying to find a way to use the current instability in the Multiverse to gain access to some insights in this and to whom the blame truly lies with.

Well it was a huge thread, and Geoff Johns was all over it, and it was about how a bunch of us wished that DC would go back to the old days and not have mass slaughters of civilians every issue.

If I choose to see Geoff Johns parodying me with Kal-L's desire to recreate the kinder, gentler Earth-2 then that's my business.

If you choose to make fun of me then I'll assume you were on Johns' side in that immense flamewar.

(That was back when you could have a flamewar at CBR. Now we have this stupid kinder, gentler CBR or else. Yick.)

If I knew who Judd Winnick was I'd idea him six ways 'till Sunday.

And to think that back in the day some 8-9 years ago, we were mortal enemies at Alvaro's! LOL!

Thanks for giving him the idea, Fly. I may not like everything about the new direction of DC, but, I actually care about going to the comic book shop again.
