Last Saturday (March 18th) I went to a book-signing at my local Forbidden Planet (Bristol) where Greg Rucka was there to sign copies of the OMAC Project trade paperback.
I took along my copies of his Atticus Kodiak Novels (Keeper, Finder, Smoker, Shooting at Midnight [technically a Bridgett Logan Novel, but AK is in it] & Critical Space), offered him the first one & said I had the rest in my bag. He gestured me to hand them all over & not only did he sign them all, but he thought of a different comment to write in each one. Anyway, while he was signing these & OMAC I had the chance to chat & ask a few questions:
Firstly, regarding the Atticus books, he told me the new one; Patriot Acts is due out soon & kicks off 30 seconds after the last one (Critical Space) finished. I asked if there was the possibily of another Bridgett Logan book too, to which he replied he'd have to talk to his publisher.
He was pleased when I told him my favourite story in No Man's Land was the one he wrote about Batman & Gordon's rooftop chat where Batman tries to reveal his identity (LODK #125). He said that no-one really mentions that story, then when I added how it reminded me of the end of Batman: Year One when Gordon is facing an unmasked Batman & tells him he's practically blind without his glasses, he said that he thinks Gordon has always known, but decided not to say, which I agreed with.
I then told him how much I enjoyed Huntress: Cry for Blood, especially the way he handled the Question (in the style Denis O'Neill wrote him). I then lead into asking if he would be handling the Question duties in 52. He said he wasn't supposed to talk about it, but said pretty much all the Renee Montoya & Question scenes in the series would be written by him & whenever he writes the Question, it is always the Denis O'Neill version. Probing further, I confirmed that he had read the issue of the Question which the Riddler appeared in (#26), so if the two of them meet up during Q's tenure in Gotham it may be referenced.
Anyway that's when I had to wrap things up as he's signed all my books (He wrote "poor poor Ted" in the OMAC book!) & there was a queue waiting, so I told him about this website & said he should drop by sometime, then moved on.
I found Greg to be very approachable & a pleasure to talk to. I lok forward to reading more of his works in the future, but for now I'm going to have to re-read Critical Space to refresh my memory before his next book comes out.
