Hate to play devil's advocate here, but aside from the whole "It reminds me of something I can't do." argument, I can't say I'm totally outraged over the requirement. There are plenty of classes we have to or had to take that have served no purpose to us in our adult professional lives. They're not asking the people to get behind the wheel of a car.

I do agree, though, that having driver's ed be a requirement for graduation is stupid in general.

On the one hand, Chicago is one of the few US cities where one can comfortably live without a car.

On the other hand, insuring that all students know motor vehicle laws -- whether they drive or not -- doesn't seem like a particularly odious requirement.

It's been a decade, but Illinois required behind the wheel training to pass driver's ed when I was in school.

Actually in my school you were required to have so many hours behind the wheel with a driving instructor to pass driver's ed.

The article says the requirement is only that they pass a written test. No behind the wheel.

The problem I see developing is that if this becomes standardized, the teachers will just start passing kids no matter what. I have seen teachers do that already cause they dont want to have to deal with a kid anymore. We have enough idiot drivers int he world....the last thing we need is more of them.

Um, but passing driver's ed is not the same thing as being licensed

Yes, but my point is that now that Students MUST have it, teachers will be more likely to pass them no matter what. Before, students, if they wanted their license had to earn it. Now it becomes no different to them than Math Class, and the teachers now will be more inclined to pass them just to get rid of them. So instead of the kids having to earn a grade to get their permit, now the teacher is put into the position of potentially having a disruptive kid over and over again or passing them.
