Noticed some similarities:

1-Both deal with a suprise alien attack during a celebration of the ship...

2-Both involve a large number of civilians stuck with the ship (and sometimes in conflict with the military)

3-Both involve human-like villains who are more complex than they first appear, and some of them fall in love with humans...

4-Both ships are basically on the run from an enemy fleet, and frequently come into skirmishes with that fleet.

5-Both ships are headed on a quest for Earth, although for different reasons.

Of course there are massive differences-BSG doesn't have pop music or transforming robots...

You're absolutly right, the similarities are uncanny. Which may explain why I find both shows to be the greatest space operas ever.

Also didn't Macross have an 'X' Year Jump much like the season finale of BSG did?

Now the real question....Vipers Vs Valrikyies

Mostly depends on the pilot. But I gotta go with Valkiries. About as manueverable, but also has the abity to change into one of the most agile mecha ever.*

Now old school vipers, those had massive FTL travel and could sensor scran a solar system in moments.

*Agile enough to punk a Zentradi, drag him into a closet, strip his uniform and get into said uniform.

Its likely Macross did borrow some, that said some of those similarities can also be applied to Mobile Suit Gundam, just on a bigger scale.

Gundam:
1. Series begins with an attack on a newly built prototype ship
2. Ship was stuffed with civilian refugees
3. sorta, like I said it could be assumed that Macross was trying to emulate Gundam just on a larger scale.
4. The White Base is constantly on the run from Zeon forces and has numerous engagements(both large scale and skirmishes) with them
5. For the first half of the series the White Base is desperatly trying to get back to Earth, and then Jaburo.
