View Full Version : Two Mediocre Thrillers

Over the past week I've seen 16 Blocks and Firewall, and both were, for want of a better word, dull.
I like Richard Donner, but 16 blocks somehow managed to not have much suspense, and the beats were mostly way too predictable. Bruce Willis is mostly okay, but Mos Def was great. Still, not a great movie.
Firewall, bleah. Where do I start? It begins as a movie that tells us it's going to stay smart, but rapidly devolves into the MOST predictable and silly actioner. It's bland as last week's oatmeal and as thrilling an Eagles reunion.
Anyone seen a GOOD thriller lately?

I am not sure if it is a thriller, but an intense character movie that almost nobody has seen is Fearless. I cannot recommend this movie enough. It is more character drama than thriller, but it has some really intense moments.

I watched 30 seconds of the Spongebob Squarepants movie.
I was thrilled to turn the channel.
Does that count? :p

Its been a while since seen a "fantastic" movie. I guess return of the king would be the last memorable I have seen. King Kong and Narnia would be recent examples of "great." But I can't recall a movie other then those three that I have felt compelled to recommend to others. And its just a coincidence that they are "epic" films.
As for thrillers and horror flicks. It seems that directors etc have confused "moodiness" with horror and action scenes with tension. Its usually about 80 minutes of buildup for about 10 minutes of ho hum pay off. The "fun" of those types of movies just don't exist anymore.

I hadn't heard of 16 Blocks, but Firewall looked Ok on the trailer. Either way, I'll be waiting till it comes out in the old release racks at Movie Gallery (Free rentals on Fri, Sat, and Sun night.)

Give it 10 minutes and you'll be hooked. It's not a bad flick.
Firewall on the other hand turned the butter in my popcorn rancid. It'll be appropriate for when they finally get full length movies availible on your cel because everyone just phoned that one in.

Don't know if you would call this a thriller, but I recently rewatched THE SPANISH PRISONER. Man, can David Mamet get any better (aside from GlenGarry Glen Ross)

I recently watched Carnosaur 3: Primal Species, so the answer is a big "no".
That said- dinosaurs VS machine guns!

These days, if a thriller features Harrison Ford or Ashley Judd, you're looking at a pretty by-the-numbers vanilla "thriller".

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. A move so good, when I finished watching it I put the DVD back in and watched it again.
Harmony Faith Lane: Well, for starters, she's been fu**ed more times than she's had a hot meal.
Harry Lockhart: Yeah, I heard about that. It was neck-and-neck and then she skipped lunch.
Harry Lockhart: I swear to God, it's like somebody took America by the East Coast, and shook it, and all the normal girls managed to hang on.
Perry Van Shrike: You're an idiot. You know that. You know if you looked in the dictionary next to the word "idiot" you know what you'll find?
Harry Lockhart: A picture of me?
Perry Van Shrike: No! The definition of the word "idiot". Which you are.

Bah. It's no Snakes on a Plane.

And that, my friends, is why Shane Black RULES!!!

Last Thriller I saw in the cinema that had me on the edge of my seat was Infernal Affairs. That was two years ago. So I'm worried now about the upcoming Scorsese remake, but I'll give it a goo.

- Silence Of The Lambs
- Strangers On A Train
- Rear Window
- Breakdown (criminally underrated)

Bah. It's no Snakes on a Plane.
True.
But if the dinosaurs had used machine guns...

And that, my friends, is why Shane Black RULES!!!
Shane Black wrote one of the most criminally underrated moves of all time, "The Long Kiss Goodnight". I swear to god with the possible expansion of "Pulp Fiction" Sam Jackson has never been cooler than in this flick. :) :)
Charlie: Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
Mitch Henessey: I hope not, 'cause I'm thinking how much my balls hurt.
Mitch: Oh, s**t! Ah, that hurt like s**t!
Charlie: I know. That's why I distracted you first. Same principle as deflowering virgins.
Mitch: Huh? What? Virgin - ? What?
Charlie: Read it in this Harold Robbins book. Guy bites her on the ear. Distracts from the pain. Ever try that?
Mitch: No, no, I sock 'em in the jaw and yell, "Pop goes the weasel."

16 Blocks started strong and it had one really wow moment early on.
And that's just it. It hits a really high note and then there's the rest of the movie. Which had some moments but didn't soar.
Mos Def was most definately doing his Damon Wayans impersonation. I kept thinking any moment Blankman is going to appear :)

Goon: Hey baby, how 'bout we go somewhere and talk?
Charlie: Sorry, I'm saving myself to get raped.
Charlie: Were you born this stupid, or did you take lessons?
Mitch: I TOOK LESSONS!!
Yes, The Long Kiss Goodnight is definitely underrated.

*le Sigh* it's been so long since I've seen a decent thriller. Saw and Saw 2 would not be counted as thrillers so much as 'let's torture people for 2 hours with cryptic clues and gory, bloody, intricate board-with-a-nail death.'
Gods I loved those movies.
The other great thriller that I loved beyond all reason was 'The Others' with Nicole Kidman. Crazy Nicole with a shotgun.
And 'The Stepford Wives'. The original, the new one was kinda lighter and giggly. The older one has creepy, creepy women. So many creepy women.

I actually enjoyed Red Eye. Though 90% of the movie took place on a plane...it's definitely worth a rental.

That was the point. Turning women into airheaded automatons is bad and scary. Thus the movie (and book, I believe) were creepy.
