Disappointing news from the ever quotable Rich Johnston in his weekly column Lying in the Gutters:
"George Pratt's declaration that the DC series "Solo" has been cancelled before his issue sees print has been widely reported. What hasn't been is some of the other artists whose work will be entering the infamous DC Bottom Drawer, never to be seen again... Berni Wrightson, Brian Stelfreeze, Jill Thompson, Scott Hampton, Sergio Aragones, Brendan McCarthy, Kevin Nowlan, Jose Luis Garcia Lopez..."
Solo was a bimonthly title with each issue featuring a single artist. It was comprised of multiple stories in each issue.
Past issues featured: Tim Sale, Richard Corben, Paul Pope, Howard Chaykin, Darwyn Cooke, Jordi Bernet, Michael Allred, Teddy Kristiansen, and Scott Hampton.
It will be missed.

Colour me gutted.
I loved the Paul Pope, Darwyn Cooke and Mike Allred issue, and some of the names listed as being ready to go but never gonna be seen are heartbreaking.
I was totally looking forward to the Aragones issue.
Dang.

I got the first issue for Christmas and have yet to read it. I keep getting side-tracked. From what I've heard about the series, it appears to have been a good experiment.

I actually found that Solo bounced up and down in terms of quality. Some of them were pretty good and others a bit flat.
I think consistancy is something that the publishers look for nowadays especially with 'prestige' format books. Solo cost twice as much as a regular comic book and only consisted of very short one off stories so it was always a style over function title.
I had a feeling it would have a limited shelf life but it did have its interesting moments.

Oh that totally blows! That was one of my favorite books DC was putting out. They were great showcase pieces. Shame

I only bought the Tim Sale and Darwyn Cooke issues. I really enjoyed both issues, but I have to really like the artist featured to pay that kind of price tag. Apparently I’m not the only one.
Sorry to those who enjoyed them all, as well as those anticipating the unpublished that were announced?

The good news? They're still doing that issue.

Alas! We'll miss that story too!
I think that the series would have been more successful if they'd brought in some bigger names. And also did issues featuring writers...
