these are the marvel titles I wanted to subscribe to:
Amazing Spiderman
Sensational Spider-Man
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
Fantastic Four
X-men
Astonishing X-Men
Uncanny X-Men
Wolverine
I am missing anything else worthwile in marvel?
In addition I will also be getting the following in DC:
Batman
Detective Comics
Batman Legends of the Dark Knight
Hawkman
I havent got into comics since 1996, before that I had been into them heavy since 1989, and light since 1985.
I hate that all my collecting resulted in the specualtion boom and most of the books I have being worth a $1 an issue. Oh well, I plan on getting complete runs of stuff I liked (Image,& Valiant) and finishing the MacFarlane run to present on Spiderman. Low prices help that.

I really like the New Avengers. If you want a non-mutanocentric (I just made that word up) team book, New Avengers is a great read and has a lot of the Marvel iconics in it.

I guess you could buy all the Spidey and X-books if you're a fan of that. But with myself being a newcomer to comics again,I learned that alot of the "flagship" titles aren't that good.
Titles I would recommend:
Captain America
Daredevil
Young Avengers (it's almost done for the year),Marvel's best team book
The Thing
She-Hulk
Ultimate Fantastic Four
Ultimates 2

I think you should consider picking up some of the newer titles like 'Runaways' and 'Young Avengers.'
However if you're looking for something a little more old school you really have to look into Captain America, because, and I say this without hyperbole, it is one of the best books being put out right now. Plus it's not too far along, so it wouldn't take much effort to catch up with.

Pretty much everything Ed Brubaker is doing for Marvel these days is gold. His Captain America has been revolutionary, his X-Men mini has been pretty awesome, and his DareDevil has been sufficiently creepy. At the same time, pretty much everything Mark Millar has been doing lately is gold. So Ultimates, backtrack and pick up his Wolverine trades he did with John Romita Jr, and there's a pretty decent chance that Civil War is going to rock.
But if I was going to recommend anything, Captain America. It's not what you think it is.

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
If you like that, get She-hulk and Thing, both by Dan Slott.
Also Marvel Team-Up and Thunderbolts.
Since I see you also like stuff like AXM, get New Avengers , Ultimates and Captain America.

Personally I would add Runaways, Conan (Dark Horse comics) and perhaps Daredevil. All pretty good stuff and the back issues are all collected in trades. For Dc, I'm a DC newbie and just added Aquaman, Blue Beatle and Checkmate since they sounded cool and the first two deals with brand new characters. Ex Machina is also pretty good (and also trade avalible).
I would hesitantly suggest Exiles which is essentially "What If" meets Sliders meets Quantum Leap. I hesitate only because the current writer is leaving soon and Chris Claremont is hoping onboard soon. But like the rest the whole run is in trade so you can pick up any of the back issues easily.

Brubaker's Captain America is the best (current) book I've read from Marvel by a large margin. His X-Men miniseries is also great (although almost over) and I expect his Daredevil will be great as well.
The only other ongoing books that I would recommend without reservation are Ultimate Spider-Man and The Thing.

I stopped reading comics about the same time you did and just started again recently. I am reading She-Hulk and X-Factor and enjoying them both very much.
I know it's not Marvel but my favorite right now is Girls by the Luna Bros.

Aquaman: sword of atlantis by Busiek and Guice was probably the best book of the last month (with mouse guard by David Petersen); and it was Busiek and Guice first issue and an all new aquaman. great great book.
Mouse guard by David Petersen i warmly recomand too (preview in my signature).
If you're a fan of Chris Claremont his current work on Uncanny is good (wandering star with art by Billy Tan), New Excalibur is a good series (even if last month's issue wasn't very good) and he does mini series like the current x-men: the end (very enjoyable) that will soon end. his next serie will be NeXt... huh... renamed GeneXt recently. And he will move from Uncanny to Exiles in July.
I have big hopes for Hawkgirl this week by Walt Simonson and Howard Chaykin
I recomand books writen by Gail Simone. Villain United that you can find in tradepaperback is great. she does the current JLA Classified arc, Birds of Prey, will do a new serie with the "heroes" of villain united. have an upcoming Atom serie with John Byrne.
Next Wave by Warren Ellis and Stuart Imonen is good.
The Thing by Dan Slott is good.
Fables is a great serie.
The seven soldiers books by Grant Morrison are good (Zatanna was great)

Excellent choices there. I get the same ones except FF and FNS.
But two you are missing are Cable/Deadpool and Captain America.
