... I have only recently discovered that I am a Weezer fan, based on the number of songs of theirs that I really like. Anybody else ever suprise themselves like that with any other artist?

I hated punk, rap, metal, and country growing up...
I surprised myself by tremendously enjoying the Ramones, the Dead Milkmen, and the Clash. I also took a liking to the Rye Coalition's "Hee Saw Dhuh Kaet".
I never would have imagined liking John Cash and Hank Williams Sr. cuz they're associated with country music so much... but once I sat down and actually listened to these guys I thought, "wow, these guys kick so much ass it's amazing"
I've also become a huge fan of Ceelo Green (who's probably more RnB than actual rap)--Goodie Mob, the Wu Tang Clan, and Outkast have all provided really great albums.
last, and perhaps not least... when I first listened to Tom Waits I thought "geez, what is up with this guy?" and now I own a bunch of his albums. his music sorta grows on you.

Well I don't know how old Totoro man is, but considering that in high school in the 1990s most of the examples punk, rap, and country that were on the radio and Much Music were crap like the Offspring, Sum 41, Garth Brooks and his ilk, and endless bling rappers I can see why he holds those attitudes. I certainly thought the same about rap and country for the longest time until encountering PE and Johnny Cash. (Didn't really have any attitude towards punk since I didn't know what it was at the time or what kind of music Offspring and Sum 41 played.) Not sure about metal though since that was pre-nu metal and there weren't many examples of it that I could remember.

I like Johnny Cash. I thought I would never enjoy the music of a country singer.

For the longest time, I'd never heard a single Elton John tune besides the stuff that's him at the end of the Lion King Sountrack. I didn't like that stuff when I was little and actually listening to the Lion King Soundtrack, so I wrote him off as being an artist that wasn't for me.
but then a few weeks ago I played a couple Elton John CDs I had on my computer from when I raided my friend's harddrive, and I discovered that Elton John is Jesus. It was a beautiful thing. Everything's so epic and beautifully written.
<3 for Elton.
