One of the new projects announced at the panel was Beyond!, a six issue miniseries written by Dwayne McDuffie, with art by Scot Kolins. The miniseries will take a diverse group of Marvel’s B-list characters (and lower), and place them in a cosmic situation, off world.

Seriously, when was the last time McDuffie did any regular comics work? There was that FF one shot a month or two ago, now this. Suddenly, I got me a hankerin' for some Damage Control.

I'm glad he's back, but I wish it could be something more high profile. Then again, it's good to test the waters.

Any word on the title's cast?

This is going to come out wrong, but it's just good, because it always seems like comics have "the black guy." The Garret Morris, the writer they can point to and show they have diversity. Priest was Marvel's guy for a while, then it was Reggie Hudlin. Nice to have two "black guys" though. I think I'm being sarcastic. I'm not 100% sure. I've been up for like somewere around 31, 32 hours now.

Oh, and at least McDuffie is talented.

Hank Pym and the Wasp.
There was some preview art at Newsarama, which included what looked like Firebird in a new costume. I'm pretty sure I saw Gravity. There was also someone hooded...possibly Sleepwalker?

I don't think I've ever really read anything of Dwayne's so I can't say I'm REALLY excited although the Beyond! project sounds cool.

Here's the pages for the project over at Newsarama:

Looks like Spidey, Medusa, Matt Gargan Venom, Wasp, Hank Pym (maybe), Gravity, possibly Sleepwalker, Firebird and some dude in some weird shirt and glasses.

Definately Pym--Tom Brevoort announced a week or so ago that Hank would be a featured character in BEYOND, and with all that tech stuff it is sure to be him.
As for weird-shirt guy, it appears to be an animal face on his shirt. Could this be Kraven's son?

Funny how the teaser thing said it was a group of B listers, yet Spidey (in his classic costume) is seemingly right there smack dab in the middle of it. Though from the art work Spidey seems to be getting it pretty good. And what the heck is Vemon doing there with a bunch of heroes anyways? Boy, this Beyond thing sure seems confusing.

Someone, ANYONE please just slit my Throat now and get it over with. I'm still trying to get the last taste of Spiderman in Space from secret Wars out of my mouth.

Now Don't get me Wrong Dwayne McDuffie is indeed the Man so I'll prob buy this for that reason alone. But earth heroes (Or Villians) in space has never really sat well with me.

I haven't read that interview and with art like that you never really know for sure. Figures he would be around Wasp though.

Maybe.

Medusa? Isn't that Titania?

But YAY! More Gravity and Sleepwalker as well as a return of Firebird. Sweet!

Could be her as well but the hair seems more like Medusa to me.

Could that be Toxin rather than the new Venom?

Edit: Actually, no. The markings on the body and the whole "impaling Spidey" thing do lean towards the Mac Gargan Venom. He has Eddie Brock's tongue, though.

Yeah, if you look, the impaling thing is coming out of his butt, like Scorpion's tail.

Dwayne McDuffie!

Excellent news...he is due for a great comeback!

Medusa? Isn't that Titania?

If it is Titania, they've busted her out of prison, given her a new costume, and doubled or tripled the length of her hair.

I think it is more likely Medusa.

.

I love McDuffie, but I hate Scott Kolins' art(that's his art, isn't it?)
Nice assemblage of heroes...just wish Spidey wasn't there, though I understand that he is the sales incentive.
At least it's not Logan...

I'm not sure Spidey is really there. Given that he looks dead on the second page.

Is that really Firebird?
Or is that Talisman?

The reason I ask is because the frills on her costume remind me of Native-American motifs...
Then again I'm not too good with my American History...she might be a descendant of Mexican natives, and Mexico is in America...and the way the bird is depicted on her chest reminds me of New Mexico imagery
I don't know...I'm sure someone else can shed some light on this.

I'm glad someone's giving Dwayne a chance. He's an excellent writer. I'm definately looking forward to Beyond! And having it filled with B'-list and lower characters is icing on the cake. :)Someone, ANYONE please just slit my Throat now and get it over with. I'm still trying to get the last taste of Spiderman in Space from secret Wars out of my mouth.

Now Don't get me Wrong Dwayne McDuffie is indeed the Man so I'll prob buy this for that reason alone. But earth heroes (Or Villians) in space has never really sat well with me.I fail to see what's wrong with it. Having Earth-bound heroes go into space has been a staple of comics for decades. It puts them in an unfamiliar, challenging situation where they have to push themselves to survive. Those situations lend themselves to high drama and fun stories. Yeah, the Silver Surfer could probably take care of the threat, but there's no risk in it for him. But with a group of low-powered characters tackling a cosmic level threat, that can be a lot of fun.

You're right that it could be Talisman (she also wore a similar headband as I recall), but the Cross around her neck makes me believe it is Bonita.

I like the idea of having Bonita, Hank and Jan all together; I wonder if Hank's brief romance with Bonita will be a factor at all.

Y'know people talk trash about Kolins' art, but it used to really be run of the mill. Back in the day he did the art for a "Young Gods" feature in Marvel Comics Presents which looked like typical 90's riff raff. I think his art's really evolved to something entirely his own.

Although Hank Pym looks like Wally West with longer hair.

But then again John Byrne is guilty of re-drawing characters.

He also did "Hawkeye" V2 and the first issue of "Spider-Man: Web of Doom". It looks WAY different then the stuff he does now.

Generally, I'm more of a fan of Marvel's B & C-listers, so a title like this suites me perfectly. Medusa, Firebird, Henry Pym, and the Wasp are definitely selling points for me, although I could do without Spider-Man and Venom.

The McDuffie/Kolins team is definitely a bonus, since I'm a fan of both creators.
