Congratulations to this year's champion, The Fury!

And great job to this year's runners-up, Siddon & venuscameback, as well as to all the other players who helped make this year's tournament a success.

The final standings will be updated on the League website today.

Please use this thread to comment on, offer suggestions, or ask questions about this year's League, including the draft list, the draft, the rules, schedule, etc. This thread is not for discussion about any of the matches, teams, or players; keep that in the Trash-Talking Fun Thread (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=102460&highlight=trash-talking).

I'd just like to thank you for handling the league this time Matt.

You did a bang-up job and your getting my vote for citizen of the month.

Thanks Matt.

Well done everyone, it was a great league. And even though I only ever faced 4 different teams out of 15. I enjoyed it.

I hope to be able to come back next year to defend my title.

P.S. Sorry about all the ranting Matt, you did a great job.

Will we still be going by the "198" list next year or will we revert to all mutants?

I felt kinda stifled by the small drafting pool.

(feel free to tell me to shutup since I walked out halfway through this year)

*Clicks fingers and gets ready to type*

:D

I have suggestions for next year:

1) Omit Selene, Living Monolith and Exodus from the draft. As shown in their teams, sometimes only they were needed to take everyone out.

2) After the forst Round of Play-offs swap the divisions arround, so that this minimises repeat games.

I had 2 myself.

3)....er...did I moan about anything else?

Sorry.Bad phrasing on my part.

All the mutants we used to have.

1) Omit Selene, Living Monolith and Exodus from the draft. As shown in their teams, sometimes only they were needed to take everyone out.In general, I have a problem omitting ANYONE from the league. As far as I'm concerned if they're a mutant they should be allowed in. Omitting reality-warpers and others without definable powers is one thing, but I think we need more of a case to fully eliminate those that you mentioned. They're not unstoppable after all.

2) After the forst Round of Play-offs swap the divisions arround, so that this minimises repeat games. Again, I've no problem changing the format. But the new format needs to be clearly defined. For instance, what's the point of having Conferences if they're not used for anything? Maybe we should look at redefining the entire League format. Thoughts.?

Just Selene then? Being an immortal being that has a massless shadow form, has vast telepathic powers, control over earth and fire (and can apparently porduce fire as well) and having magics to rival any magic user in the MU but Strange...well, she's a bit much.

Again, I've no problem changing the format. But the new format needs to be clearly defined. For instance, what's the point of having Conferences if they're not used for anything? Maybe we should look at redefining the entire League format. Thoughts.?
Conferences are good, but not needed. Look at the Football World Cup for example, starts as the ML dies, but not conferences just many league tables, as teams go into the 4th round or QFs onwards it's pretty safe from repeat matches until the semis and/or final.

Although, the play-offs stage is omitted in that case. If you wish to keep them the easiest way is to make it so that when teh QFs round comes, take the 2 winning Play-off winner of Conference A and make them play the winners of the groups in conference B and visa versa.

No possble repeat until the Semi or final that way.[/COLOR]

Can you provide a diagram of the Football World Cup example? Not familiar with it, and American Football is primarily the 2-conference model.

..okay the World Cup is a bad example. It's just 8 small leagues of 4 going into rounds after that. (Yes 32, but you can keep it 16)

But in the World cup and most Football things, htere is no play-offs so there is a very unlikely chance of having 3 from the same division going through, only ever 2, a winner adn a runner up.

mattbib
03-17-2006, 12:11 PM
Let's just make it a bracket...lol. So much simpler. But then some people would be out after Round 1.

...say what?

How about you keep it the same.

Except for swapping the winning Play-off teams. :)

I like having leagues to start off, it allows older hands to find their rhythm and new players to see how the tournament works, how folk usually write strategies and debate them etc and still have the chance to progress.

but elimininating the play-offs is fine.

I think the tournament runs for too long for non-players to maintain their interest. While as a player I've enjoyed the luxury of a full week inbetween matches this year - especially helpful when you're jointly running a team - it dragged the duration of the tournament out to two months. I think it's fine for matches in the league stage to be once a week because there are so many matches going off (regular matches may help retain voter interest in the tournament too). So maybe we can think about having two matches a week after the league stage?

I'd like to see the two finalists seeded next year so that they're automatically in opposite ends of the drawer.

In the league stage, when two teams are tied on points I think it should be the highest vote differential that wins through, then the lowest number of votes cast against a team, the highest number of votes cast for a team and, if still inseperable after those three comparisons, then take the result of the match between those two teams as deciding who goes through.

However if that match was drawn there is an unlikely but possible scenario in which the above rules - and the current rules - wouldn't produce a winner. In this case I suggest a re-match of the two drawn teams to decide who goes through.

I didn't like the rule which allowed characters freshly to be mutants or to have their powers intact post-Decimation to be eligible to be drafted. It caused confusion as the tournament progressed with people unsure if character xxxx was one eligible or not. It keeps it simpler to stick to the starting draft pool and not add to it as we go along - but I appreciate this year was special because The 198 was new and the fate of many characters was (and is still) unclear.

Thanks Matt for your smooth handling of the tournament & congratulations to Kri once more for an excellent, well-deserved win

*ahem* (taps glass)I'd like to make a toast.

To the Fury:
To the only man who beat me in this year's tournament. To one of creative strategies, and almost unstoppableness! To an excellent choice of team and decisions. To award winning debates! For all this and more, Fury, you deserved this win. So to you my friend, I say congratulations, and hopefully, we'll be here next year to wipe the floor with you. ;) Just kidding.....but again
Congratulations Fury!
Also thanks to all the participants of this year's league, it made it quite the fun run.

On Selene

considering how you used Rogue, or how someone could use other characters I wouldn't say she is to powerful.

On the Draft Pool

I think a number of characters should be included next year, I think if you have held a title of X-man you should be let it. It would also be better to have a bit more powerhouses in like (Warlock, Captain Britain, Juggernaut, Warbird (who was an X-man), Longshot, Blink, Pocy, Mrs. Marvel, Quicksilver) to dilute the first round.

On Kid Vulcan

He seems to be on the level of a Mr. M but we have a year to check him out, see if he can realistically be defeated. We will see if Brubaker depowers him a bit.

On Fury

Great job, and it was a spirted battle, and honestly I enjoyed myself much more this year. Once again the winner didn't come from the front of the pack in the draft order but in the late middle area.

Yeah...okay.

Although I was surprised at the fact you did not use Selene anywhere near to her full power in that last battle, she was only ever used simply. Which still worked to the desired effect.

And I ad the Rogue absorb my team idea from the start., being able to get Madrox just made it sweetter. :)

I'm still unsure of Non-mutant characters. Longshot is a probability person so will be ignored, but the mystic people aren't mutants and Quicksilver is not longer a mutant.

On Kid Vulcan

He seems to be on the level of a Mr. M but we have a year to check him out, see if he can realistically be defeated. We will see if Brubaker depowers him a bit.
This is interesting. I never thought of him. At his current levels he is too powerful. Depending on where Brubaker takes it depends on how he could be defined.

His original powers were crazy powerful to begin with, but he was able to do all the other stuff. He could bend energy. Simple as that. Although that still makes him weak against TPs and can't himself produce energy...right?

On Fury

Indeed, good job to you too. It was a great final. :D

I agree. Restricting it to The 198 was kinda fitting for this year but if there are still so few mutants around next year i'd like to see a return to the policy that if they served on an x-team, they are eligible

No. She was a patient of Xavier's and a guest at the mansion.

Carol Danvers was an X-man on numerous occasions as she did take over Rogue for periods of time. She was also an X-man as Binary when they fought the Brood and she eventually rejected membership. The real measure of her X-validity is she was enough of an X-man for Claremont to put her in X-men: The End as a major figure.

I guess there's some room for interpretation, but the fact is she was never considered an X-Man. Even as far back as the original OHOTMU she was specifically listed under the "Allies" section under the X-Men entry. And she's never appeared on an X-Men roster since.Carol Danvers was an X-man on numerous occasions as she did take over Rogue for periods of time.
Of course that was only a residual psyche, not really Carol Danvers.
The real measure of her X-validity is she was enough of an X-man for Claremont to put her in X-men: The End as a major figure. And even there she's only really a Starjammer.

Siddon
03-20-2006, 04:32 PM
Well lets be realistic then there should be 16 A-leaguers for the next draft.

Spoilers ahead

Exodus
Selene
Living Monolith
Cassandra Nova
Quicksilver
Polaris
Apocaylpse
Warlock
Northstar
Emma Frost
Rogue
Madrox
Iceman
Magma
Rachel Grey
Storm

thats not a bad group of mutants for next year, with Kid Vulcan maybe on the list.

The other thing you could do is expand the field and add in the major X-mutants to get the field to 250. Maybe throw in the Exiles and some wildcard dead mutants.

mattbib

Quicksilver Is not a mutant. Not anymore. the powers that this character has gained are from a different source and so not a mutantcy.

I don't remember if I ever even said it, TF, but just in case- (belated) congratulations!!!

As to the prize, it was an idea I had and brought up at the onset of the tournament; I thought (and still do) that it would be cool for us to get either one or a group of the talented artists on this board to do a drawing of the winning team as sort of a prize for the winner. There seemed to be some interest in it, but we never really discussed it in much detail and I didn't follow up on it like I probably should have, so it never got off the ground. If any artists are willing to volunteer, though, that would be awesome; and maybe next year, we can get a more "formal" talk going about it ahead of time.

So I guess it's to late vote? :p So that's it for the whole year? Why don't you have like two or three "mini" tournaments and have top three winners from each tournament battle out at the end of the year?

I dunno, will take a little organising.

At least it's more regular then the olympics and lasts longer.

Although, Me and last years winner might have a match soemtime. If he's still up for it.

Eek, I really don't know - someone just give me a rate and I'll try and figure out a timeframe...it's really more a matter of finding the time. I mean, I have been known to draw requests fer free, when the characters are fun to draw. In anticipation of Mutant League 2007, please provide feedback:

1) The tournament. What's your preference on divisions, conferences, etc.? What's the minimum number of times any one team should play? If you suggest a format that an existing organization uses, please provide a diagram to help me understand what it is you're saying. Also, feel free to suggest alternatives to the current league format. We're not stuck using four divisions in two conferences.

2) The mutants. Last year was limited to those who still had mutant powers. Some want to exclude characters based on power levels. Others would rather include additional non-mutant, X-related powerhouses to even the playing field. Some would like to use point assignments. Thoughts?

3) The Lucky One and The Fury...do you still want to have an exhibition match?

It's all fine, except for one feature, the chance of repeat matches. Last time a team had the chance of 2 repeats before the final, so only playing 4 different teams in the entire tournement if they made it to the final. Of course it didn;t happen, but there were a few repeats.

To sort this the easiest thing is to make the Winner's of play-offs A and B play winners of Groups C and D, and visa versa. This at least means that teams only really have the chance of playing a repeat in the final so the best 2 teams will always get there, when before the best 2 teams could start in the same disivion but meet in the semi-final.

I''ve lost myself....you get the idea right?

2) The mutants. Last year was limited to those who still had mutant powers. Some want to exclude characters based on power levels. Others would rather include additional non-mutant, X-related powerhouses to even the playing field. Some would like to use point assignments. Thoughts?
I think we should include all known mutants that are still powered and add a selected few that are not confirmed powered ot depowered up to 198. Keep somewhat to the stories in the X-men.

For me, no non-mutant should be in it. It's called Mutant tournement, not X-men tournement.

3) The Lucky One and The Fury...do you still want to have an exhibition match?
Yes. :D

The Lucky One
09-06-2006, 10:21 AM
No point assignments- the format we have works fine, and there are way too many characters who get overvalued or undervalued when you try to do points.

I'm in favor of using non-mutant X-members, myself... yes, it's called the Mutant Tournament, but it takes place on the X-Board, not the Mutant Board. But I don't have a strong preference for that, because the two non-mutants I'd be most interested in (Mimic and Longshot) are both excluded anyway for being, respectively, too powerful and having too unpredictable of a power.

As for an exhibition match, I'm game. Bring it.

I cant wait for this to role around next year. One of my main problems with the Avengers league was limited knowledge of their continuity. It meant i had to do much more research and therefore was too much time for me to continue to participate. When the mutant leagues come back that will not be a problem.

Rogue, Multiple Man, Mentallo, Sub-Mariner, Thunderbird, Arclight, Toad

And Cypher, the Mutant Tournament generally starts at the beginning of the year. Unless Matt plans on changing it this year, I'd imagine the draft would take place in early January and fights would begin in late January/early February.

How does it work?Everyone has to lose two matches to be eliminated. You remain in the top bracket until you lose. After your first loss, you move to the bottom bracket. After your second loss, you're out.

Leaguers, here's the potential draft list, though there will be a twist come draft time. Please help me weed out dead and/or depowered mutants from the first section. Then help me confirm that the second section is comprised solely of dead and/or depowered mutants. Now's also the time to question inclusion/exclusion, etc.

Icarus is dead from what I hear, so is Wallflower. And Jazz, which is going to crush us all, I know. And (AXM spoilers) I think it's been confirmed that Negasonic Teenage Warhead was just a mental projection of Cassie Nova.

Thanks. Any more, anyone else?

Also, other than Living Monolith were there any characters that players overwhelmingly thought were too powerful last year?

Any final feedback? The draft list is more or less done, but please let me know if any more of the above have been confirmed depowered or have died since M-Day. Also, if there are any other mutants not on the list who have been confirmed depowered or have died since M-Day, please list them.

I think Radius has been confirmed not dead, but not sure if he's powered or not, so he might be on the right list anyway. Mondo is missing from your list, he hasn't been confirmed dead or depowered, just in limbo. Same with Flex as far as I know.

Radius is confirmed alive but depowered. This was confirmed by his OHBook entry and New Avenger #(the one with all the images of depowered mutants). His name was amoungst them.

Right, Matt, I'm still wondering about Quicksilver, I'm guessing he is in-human now or at least no longer a mutant...right? So not part of the tournement.

Also, Jazz is dead. (not that anyone was going to pick him)

I'm including re-powered former mutants, including Pietro, Lorna and Gazer.

But with their current powers.

I'm not using anyone who's "in limbo".

Only if they're confirmed as part of the 198, confirmed de-powered, or confirmed as having died after M-Day.

Okay fair enough.

Can we confirm that Polaris has magnetic powers? as she lost them and no one not even Brubaker has explained how she got them back or if they are magnetic. Before that the powers she got were to house deseases.

Okay, technical question following up on that- if Quicksilver's allowed in with his current powers, is whoever gets him allowed to draft depowered mutants?

Not in the sense that you mean, no.

That sounds great! Last year I missed it cuz I registered in these holy forums in February. How do I participate in the next one?:D

There are sixteen spots.

Registration for Mutant League 2007 will open on January 1 on a first-come, first-served basis. Anyone considering signing on should be aware of the time commitment (i.e. plan on having to submit a strategy a week for the next ten weeks). It's a big commitment. Some of you who aren't sure may want to consider teaming with another player.

I hope everyone is going to participate and if not in the fight take the time to read strategies and vote.

My victory last year, while cool, seemed sad as we didn't even get as many votes as the first game did.

I noticed on wikipedia Kraven was included on the X-Men 198 list, are you looking at adding him to the draft list.

So what time tomorrow does "registration" open? (EST preferred since I'm on the east coast:D )

Hey... is Wiccan considered a mutant? I'm not 100% up on Young Avengers info

He is, though id imagine hed be outlawed under the same principle as 'Honey Lemon'...seeing as his power is near limitless.

Speed should also be a mutant. I still don't know if I like his code name...

Also, I don't think I have the time/knowledge to participate, but is the voting on the matches open to anybody?

Voting is open to anyone and everyone. All that's asked is that you take the time to read each strategy and vote on which you actually think is best, rather than saying, "Dood, Wovlerine iz the baddest, so his team winz!!!!!1! lololol!"
;)

And if you take the time to comment in the thread about why you voted one way or the other, well that's just gravy.
