View Full Version : Shouldn't Nitro have the biggest villain rep ever now?

Think about it, he killed Captain Marvel, he's gonna kill a good chunk of the New Warriors. That's more than Dr. Doom has done. Oh, sure, he killed Ben and Reed for about 20 minutes apiece, but Nitro kills em dead for good!

I think so.

He was also in the Heroes 4 Hire book by John Ostrander where Iron Fist had this cool matchup with him and blew up Nitro's fist when Danny's Iron Fist met his exploding hand. It's interesting that Wolverine will be the one given the duties to hunt him down in his own series, although the art by Humberto doesn't really help me want it more.

I don't see why. I mean yeah, he supposedly kills the New Warriors but, you know, he supposedly kills The New Warriors. I'm not trying to dis the team, but if I were Venom or Abomination or whoever, and someone walked up to me and tried to act all tough because they killed a bunch of teenage superheroes, I'm not going be quaking in my boots. Like I said, not trying to dis the team, just trying to see through the eyes of other villains.

And my understanding was that Nitro's killing of Captain Marvel wasn't an intentional thing. I thought Mar-Vell got cancer because of exposure to Nitro's powers, but that it wasn't something Nitro was planning. Am I wrong?

I don't think it was by Nitro personally but by the nerve gas he unleashed on Captain Marvel that took it's toll on him later on.

He won't get the biggest villian rep ever for taking out a second string version of the New Warriors. But I imagine his stock will go up a bit. He will have triggered a pretty big event. And taking out any heroes should get you some street cred.

While I think the "street cred" aspect sounds about right for the killing of a superhero team, consider at least two consequences. First, as a result of the mass casualties and collateral damage resulting from Nitro's actions, instead of having a handful of civilian crimefighters whose ethics largely limit their options to intervention and apprehension, there may now be a national force of "supercops" whose options now include lethal force. Also, should he be sent to jail, he could face a number of incarcerated criminals whose own code of ethics dictates that said lethal option be used on him on the account of the kids on that school bus he blew up. Old Man Nitro better be keeping his head low.

Of course, there's another possibility. If the pro-registration side should win, and the result is eventually detrimental to super-villains, again they wouldn't be too happy with Nitro, regardless of their moral views on killing children.

It was indeed the absorption of the nerve gas not Nitro's power that gave Captain Marvel cancer. Mar-Vell's nega bands lessened the effects off the nerve gas at the moment, but over time, the toxins did develop into cancer, and ironically, the nega bands that kept Mar-vell alive turned out to be the factor that prevented the cancer from being treated.

So, when it comes to Nitro, I'd imagine that most heroes view him as a formidable opponent, but nowhere it the ruthlessly deadly level of Dr. Doom or Thanos.

Is this the same Nitro that showed up in Daredevil's Underboss?

I was thinking less about how the other heroes thought of him, so much as the other villains.
