I think it was always planned to be released in North America and Europe in the fall, but the Japanese release was supposed to be this spring. I am glad that there will be a simultaneous release now in November. I can't imagine that Sony would want the XBox to have two holiday seasons go by without any competition on the next-gen gaming front.

Will they have enough systems to launch such an expensive consoles in 3 territories at once during the holiday? 0_o
They really don't want MS to have that holiday season all to themselves

It was never going to launch in spring. Whenever new formats are in question you can add an automatic six months to a console launch. Hollywood has to have it's say frist.

That's the plan. They'll want to limit supply to begin with.
That's also why games like GOW 2 are on PS2 so they can keep gamers occupied until PS3 launches.

What's the point of a simultaneous launch when you don't have enough systems to go around? Was Sony paying attention when MS F'ed up the 360 launch? Don't they remember all the drama of the PS2 launch?
Demand is nothing without supply. A shortage of PS3s is just gonna put more money in MS's pocket

From the Playstation Business Brief: "Sony's production line is set to pump out one million units per month to meet demand, with a total of six million units to be produced in Fiscal Year 2006 (through March 2007) alone. Production numbers are higher for PS1 and PS2 in their initial years."

For what, pray tell? Is there anything (worthwhile) even out on Blu-ray yet?

Not a big surprise, everyone's been saying the initial launch date was pure fantasy, anyways.

I'm pre-ordering 2 (one at my work and one at our rival's place). I'm going to put one up on ebay, and I'm guessing that the increased demand will raise the price such that selling one will practically pay for the other.

The PS3s blu-ray drive will not be writeable from what I hear. Still, I guess I may as well start putting DVDs on eBay now.

I think MS is gonna have a price drop on the 360 just in time for the holidays to fuck with sony. And there wont be a shortage anymore by then.

It won't be, but I'm sure it'll read the 30GB of whatever I decide to toss on a disc (perhaps with a little modding).
You can look at the announced Blu-Ray titles at http://www.blu-ray.com There aren't many, but there several that I'm personally interested in (Reservoir Dogs, Hero, The Matrix).

Probably coincide with a couple of big titles being released. Hopefully Halo3.

I doubt they'll drop the price. Unit costs will still be too high.

NO sony has NOT learned! do the math!
So with around 2 mil units ready by November. That would be 2,000,000 / 3. So each region would get 666,000 PS3's. Not many considering the UK alone has a population of 67 mil. Now add that to the god knows how many other millions in Europe, waiting for a share of 666,000 PS3's.
Yet another demand outstrips supply. I better get one pre-ordered. Gonna make a killing on Ebay this christmas. Thanks Sony, for my extra christmas money

People say that the best time to buy a next gen machine is when the price drops. Bullschmidt! The best time to buy is when it's launched, buy two, sell one, instant free console!

I wouldn't count on a simultaneous release at all; my money says 2007 for territories outside Japan. I simply don't see Sony as having the logistics to pull this sort of thing off while at the same time having to compete with the Revolution launch in its home territory. They're gonna need as many units as they can manage inside Japan if they intend to keep Nintendo in check over there.

I'm not surprised by the delay.
I expected it actually.
Now I hope it doesn't cost over $500. dollars on top of it.

You know, Sony never did say that every kid in the three territories would have a Playstation 3 in their home this holiday season...
Just sayin'

NO, but the entire point of putting out this product is to $$$$..... and you cant do that unless you get as many PS3 into households as you can.

Sony's current model of deliberately organising shortages in time for Christmas works wonders by the way...

Way I see it, 666,000 per territory is not a terrible number at all. And no matter what number of units they ship worldwide, there will be a high demand for the Playstation 3. Sony knows this, and that is why they plan on shipping a million units a month worldwide. And with a higher demand will come a larger profit.
