Pardon the press release, folks, but I want to spread the word on this...

GET COMICS SIGNED! GO WATCH THE RED SOX WITH BEARDED FAT GUYS!

On Saturday, April 8, 2006, at 4:35, the Boston Red Sox are playing the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. Award-winning comics writer Kurt Busiek and Hugo-winning fantasy author Lawrrence Watt-Evans will be there, watching the game -- and you could be, too!

Kurt Busiek will be appearing at two Beyond Comics locations in Maryland April 7th and 8th to talk with fans and sign copies of the new One Year Later SUPERMAN, ACTION COMICS and AQUAMAN: SWORD OF ATLANTIS -- as well as ASTRO CITY, MARVELS, JLA/AVENGERS or whatever else he's written, he ain't picky. In addition, Beyond Comics is holding a raffle to benefit the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund -- the lucky winner (and a friend) will get to join not only Busiek, but also award-winning science-fiction and fantasy novelist Lawrence Watt-Evans, at Saturday night's Red Sox/Orioles game at Camden Yards in Baltimore.

"This whole thing came about because of baseball," Busiek said. "My pal Lawrence Watt-Evans and I are both Red Sox fans -- we grew up one town apart in Massachusetts, and spend a lot of time talking baseball over the phone these days. So when Lawrence invited me to come out to Maryland for the Orioles' three-game homestand against the 2004 World Champion Boston Red Sox (whoo!), I figured it sounded like a blast. And then he set up the signings with Beyond Comics, as a sneaky way to get someone else to pay for my plane tickets.

"But as long as I was doing a signing (and getting flown across the US for free), I figured there must be a way to make some money for the CBLDF, too," said Busiek. "So here's the deal: We bought two extra tickets to the Saturday night game. Beyond Comics is selling raffle tickets, and the winner gets to join Lawrence and me for the game, and bring a friend. We'll talk comics, SF, baseball, whatever -- and you get to see the Red Sox whup up on the Orioles, to boot. Or at least, that's how it's _supposed_ to work out...!"

Raffle tickets cost $4 each, and are now on sale at both Beyond Comics locations on. The winner of the baseball tickets must be present at the drawing, which will be at the Saturday signing, to win. "However," says Busiek, "to encourage people to buy raffle tickets even if they can't make it to the game, if the first winner we pick isn't there, we'll get them a pretty cool consolation prize -- a signed copy of the rare Graphitti hardcover of MARVELS, and a signed copy of THE WIZARD LORD, Lawrence's latest novel."

Busiek will be appearing at the Gaithersburg location of Beyond Comics on Friday, April 7th, from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm, and at the Frederick location on Saturday, April 8th, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

The addresses are:

Beyond Comics
Lakeforest Mall
Gaithersburg, MD 20877

Beyond Comics
5632 Buckeystown Pike
Frederick, MD 21704

Those wishing to purchase raffle tickets by e-mail, please check with Beyond Comics at: store@beyondcomics.com

Those who can't make it to Maryland and/or don't want to enter the raffle, but would like to support the CBLDF anyway, because you're just plain good people with generous hearts and a love for our First Amendment freedoms, visit them online at: http://www.cbldf.org/

For further details, contact either John Shine in Gaithersburg at 301-216-0007, or Jon Cohen in Frederick at 301-668-8202.

This "Kurt Busiek" fellow of which you speak seems to be a nifty dude, being involved in a thing like this. Haven't heard of him myself, though. ;)

Will there be beer?

I mean, baseball is intolerable without beer!

Sounds like a good cause though and well worth a mere $4 investment.

It's a ball park. They have guys that walk around and sell beer.

We won't buy it for you, mind you -- the tickets and the sterling company am the prize -- but it's available.

So you're in?

Drat. I was in Baltimore not two weeks ago! Tell you what, come to Buffalo and we'll do this for a hockey game, the winner gets to watch the Sabres beat the Bruins (again). There's an awesome comic shop here in Buffalo, I'm sure they'd love to have signing.

Hell, let's make it Busiek World Tour '06. :D

(Kurt, you've always been my favorite comics writer, and I think it's incredibly cool that you're doing this sort of thing, even if I can't attend)

Kurt,

Wish that I could, am in the UK and can't get out there but have to just say (gushing praise here) that I really enjoy your work, loved your take on Wonder Man who is one of my favourite characters.

Quick question if you don't mind (sorry to hijack our thread) but would you have liked to have tried your hand at The Guardians of the Galaxy? i think you could have and maybe still could do a lot with them.

Anyways, enough rambling.

Greg

Quick question if you don't mind (sorry to hijack our thread) but would you have liked to have tried your hand at The Guardians of the Galaxy?

I loved 'em in the Seventies, and would have had a blast writing that Guardians.

I didn't much care for the later Guardians, when their world was full of future versions of 20th-century Marvel. I can see the reason it's commercial, it just didn't interest me.

So I suspect if I ever did the Guardians, readers would complain that I wasn't using the Stark and the future Spirit of Vengeance and "Hollywood" and the future-Phoenix, and when could we see future-Moonstone?

Kurt,

Thanks for the reply, I think you'd be extremely cool on a new Guardians and I find it amazing that you find time to respond to these questions - wow!

You're a star!

Thanks

Greg

Well, so long as there is beer. Sadly, however, I won't be in Boston but I will make a contribution to what is a very worthy cause (follow the link boys & girls).
