My girlfriend, her mother, and her 12 year-old sister just arrived home when they were robbed at gunpoint in their backyard on Thursday night. The robber must've spotted them get out of the car and followed them as they were about to enter the house through the back door. When it happened, the first thing my girlfriend did was grab her younger sister. No one was hurt when it was over. Nothing was taken that couldn't be replaced other than a few sentimental items.

This was my girlfriend's first intimate experience with a dangerous neigborhood she knew all her life. After the incident, the cops even asked her family why they're still living in the area.

Has anyone here been robbed before? What's your story?

Wow, I'm glad everyone's okay.

I've never been robbed; I'm more of a threat than a target.

Jesus, that's scary shit. Glad nobody was hurt.

Is moving somewhere else an option at all?

Sorry to hear about that!

I've never been robbed. I come from a long line of grocers, each which looked down the barrell of a gun way too many times (one even died that way), so I got out of the family business.

Glad all is good now...Did they catch the idiot?

Everyone, thanks for the concern. Much appreciated.

Is moving somewhere else an option at all?I don't really know the answer. My best guess would be that it's not. The family's lived there for more than twenty years and it's been bad for a long time. It's not like the neigborhood drastically changed at any point.

Did they catch the idiot? No. The police were given a description, but I doubt they'll ever figure out which hoodlum did it. When my girlfriend asked one of the cops how often robberies like this take place, he told her it happens often.

That sucks. I'm glad your girlfriend and family are all right. Hopefully they can move to a better neighborhood.

Oh, man, I am SO glad they're all okay! That's scary, and the potentials don't bear thinking about. Yipe. Things, no matter how sentimental our attachment to them are, aren't as important as lives... and I'm glad they got out of it unharmed.

as everyone else has said. . that is frightening.

glad everyone is physically OK.. . mentally?. . I'm sure it will take some time to feel "safe" again.

but I'm still glad no one was hurt.

Damn that's scary knowing that people you care about live in such a bad neighborhood. Glad nobody got hurt.

Hope they can move soon.

If cops are recommending moving, then the neighborhood is probably beyond redemption.

Sorry to hear this happened to someone close to you. Thankfully nobody was harmed.

I've twice been robbed, once at gunpoint, once at knifepoint. Both happened when I was a lot younger, in larger cities; on one occasion I was alone, on the other, I was with others. I suspect I probably didn't have much of a urban survival sense back then, and probably gave off the "clueless" vibes that often make one a target.

Huh?

That is too bad. Glad they are okay.

I have never been robbed but I know a few people that were, and one of them is a crazy story. I will recount it now for your enjoyment.

My brother used to live in Washington DC (3 years ago). He lived in a neighborhood that was not that safe, but far from a ghetto. Anyway his roomates had gone out for new year's eve and were in a cab home. In the cab were two of my brother's roomates and one of their girlfriends (3 people + driver). The cab pulled up in front of their apartment building and they were about to pay when both doors in the back of the cab were wrenched open and two sawed off shotguns were shoved into the roomates' faces. Money was demanded. One of the roomates hesitated for a second and was hit in the face with butt of the gun (that broke his jaw in many places). The roomates handed over what they had and got out of the cab. The two robbers pulled the cabby from the cab and drove off down the street. Problem was, the girlfriend was still in the back of the cab. She hadn't had time to exit the cab. She jumped out of the speeding cab further down the street.

The two were eventually caught, and the roomates testified at the trial. Apparently the cops had several other similar incidents in the area that they had linked to the two robbers. Those guys went away for a long time. The roomate that had his jaw broken had to have a couple surgeries and have his mouth wired shut for a few weeks.

THE END - be careful.
