I'm currently re-reading some of the original Ms Marvel series and noticed that the first 6 issues, she had an exposed Mid-riff and back.
Does anyone know why this was changed to the full cover up costume.
It wouldn't surprise me that someone got cold feet when people complained about that was ahead of it's time in Fashion, which we take for the norm today.

The Captain Marvel knockoff was bad. The revived blue with yellow bolt is still bad. She needs an entirely new costume.
No explaination was given.

Probably because it was a truly terrible costume - leave aside the bare-belly special (I can remember the Thing commenting along similar lines to (I think) Black Goliath about his bare-belly costumer, and it wasn't much better on MM), the "grab me, strangle me or pound me into a wall" scarf was particularly stupid.
I really like the blue with zigzag costume, apart from the way it's progressively becoming a smaller & smaller swimsuit - if the crotch gets any smaller she's going to be showing her... lady's special place... to the world. (Maybe she's working on the same premise as the Power Girl cleavage circle - "keep your eyes on that, and I'll just pound you round the head..."). As female characters go, it's a pretty good costume, otherwise

I think my problem with Ms M's costume is that it seems to be the basic that soooooo many other costumes are based on. Take away the lightning bolt - that Storm pinched once- and dye it red, add foofy sleevy things and you have Elektra's. Instead, keep it blue and add swirly blue gloves and its Psylockes. I am sure there are more and I know Carol Danver's was probably the original, but to me it's just a bit plain now...

I think it's iconic.
I thought there was an explanation in the letters page of why the midriff was covered. I thought it had to do with readers' complaints.
It didn't bother me one way or the other, but I liked Cockrums redesign much better. I think the worst thing about the first costume -- was the horrible hair-do. That's something that needed explaining. As Carol, she had long blonde hair, but as Ms. M., her hair was shorter and feathered -- very stiffly.

I couldn't disagree more. I think both are extremely well-designed.

I love her current one. Simplicity at its finest. I like it best with the Black Cat-ish eyepiece instead of the GreenLantern ish one.
