i try to buy my comics in bulk from ebay, and all from the same seller so shipping is less than 50 cents per comic. i like to get them home at an average of a dollar each including shipping. but i collect comics nobody else seems to want so i get them cheap

Mile High Comics is a reliable source for back issues since they have a diverse obscure collection of almost everything. I buy from MHC often when I cannot find the comics at my LCS.
There may or may not be a substantial difference in "in-stock accuracy" between Mile High's own website inventory and their e-bay back stock.
Several times I've ordered from MH's ebay auctions only to be told the item was not in stock. This is especially annoying when I order multiple items, usually only to take advantage of combined shipping, and discover that the principle comic I was after is not after all in stock. Since e-bay auctions are paid for at a point prior to inventory verification, I am in such cases stuck with an order that does not include the comic I was actually after. Sure I am refunded for the absent comic, but had I known this would be the case I certainly would never have placed the order in the first place... essentially paying semi-high shipping for the sake of a "filler comic".

Yeah...I've had the same sort of experience. I've ordered through MHC's eBay listings maybe two or three times and one of those times a couple of old Batman issues that I'd ordered weren't actually in stock.
Having said that though, I've ordered through MHC's own website countless times and I have never, ever had any problems at all.

I ordered off Mile High Comics quite a few times and never had a problem. They have definitly lowered there prices over the last year. Ive also used there ebay auctions and havent had a problem.
As far as buying bulk of ebay i think its a great idea and have done it with less popular series like West Coast Avenger. I paid about cents an issue buying that way.
I do have one way of buying that i dont see come up that I was wondering if anyone has done this. At the local show and other cons i see whole long boxes on sale for $100 and its your choice of what goes in it. I was wondering if anyone has tryed that before??

Oh, and I should mention that I did have one order misfilled by Mile High once (they sent me the wrong issue of Kid Eternity) but they were prompt and courteous in replacing the issue. Likewise with Lone Star when they sent me the wrong Batman/Poison Ivy title and credited my account there.
I actually just read Kid Eternity! I liked it, but man was that weird. I probably should have read it all in 1 sitting - assuming it wouldn't make my head explode.

I've used mycomics shop (LoneStar) a few times and have been fully satisfied every time. What I like about them is their website is easy to navigate, they accept PayPal, and if you sign up for their prefered mailing list (it's free) they offer discounts on certain comics on a weekly basis. For example one week they might offer an extra 5-10% on Dell comics, or Frank Miller comics.

Oh, by the way. Has anyone out there read the Blitzkrieg WII series from DC? I think it was 5 issues long, and I've always been curious to buy them.
The Mighty Thor #228 (Thor, Hercules, & Firelord vs Ego), The Mighty Thor #1-5, The Mighty Thor #7-17, The Mighty Thor #19-20, & The Mighty Thor #22-25 (1998 series)

They refilled the discount bins at my favourite local shop the other day -- it's now got more comics in it than the regular back issue section! So I caved and picked up some recent books at a dollar a pop, as well as The Unknown Soldier #224 and Superman #286. The sight of Superman telling a statue of himself "Go, Superman Statue -- it's now up to you!" was too much for me to pass by.
Good to know those eye-catching covers still work decades later, eh?

It does sound like it would be worth trying. Ive only seen an actual sign saying $100 for a long box one time at a con here in NJ.

Thanks! I might get more Dan Jurgans The Mighty Thor later.

just bought 7 ex-mutants comics. 3 of them i already had though. i think im done buying lots and will have to finish up with single issue purchases now. no more comics until next month :frown:
I had one of those great little swap meet moments this afternoon.
I spent $45.00 on a small pile of comics that someone at some point had punched a couple of small holes into their spines to allow the owner to bind them.
Now other then the small holes the books are crisp and white and in really nice shape, although like I said they have the holes, and that drops them down to at best as VG.
But check it out.
Frankenstein #1 (1964) Dell "The Monster Lives"
World’s Finest #161 (1966) 80pg Giant "Space Alien Special"
Star-Spangled War Stories #117 (1964) featuring “A Medal for a Dinosaur”
Superman #207 (1968) 80pg Giant 30th anniversary issue
Justice League of America #23 (1963) “Drones of the Queen Bee”
Justice League of America #37 (1965) the Justice Society of America starring in “The Earth Without a Justice League”
Justice League of America #53 (1967) “Secret Behind the Stolen Super-Weapons”
Nice books eh?
Oh yeah, there were a couple of others I forgot to mention.
Justice League of America #22 (1963) the second part of the return of the JSA in the classic story, “Crisis on Earth-Two”
The Atom #1 (1962) “Master of the Plant World”
I just wish I had a little bit more cash at the time or a couple of nice looking Green Lanterns would have made that pile too. But I went to get more cash from the ATM and when I got back the rest of the books were gone.
Still, not a bad buy for $45.00 if I do say so myself.

Were those holes small "stitch" style or large "punch" types like you find on paper for loose leaf notebooks? I've seen cases of the latter... why would anyone put holes like that into comics is beyond me. IMO it's bad enough that people re-staple them.

They are small holes typical of the kind of magazine binding books that used to be common in the 60's and 70's.

I picked up a Gemstone trade collecting issues 6-11 of EC's War Against Crime for $2.00 yesterday. Strangely, I can't find the listing for the trade on either the GCD or comicbookdb -- although I can find the individual issues of both the original and the Gemstone reprint.
The books in quite nice condition, too, as I appear to be its first owner. The only real blemish is the $2.00 price tag stuck on the front.
I found a great collection of old comic strips today at one of the local used books stores.
http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/2358/greatop9.jpg
The collection is called Great Comics from the Daily News and Chicago Tribune and it's just too cool.
Nice sized sequences from various periods of Dick Tracy, Little Orphan Annie, Terry & the Pirates, Gasoline Alley, Smokey Stover, and about a dozen others.
It has a tiny color section that looks great and the black and white reproduction is excellent.
This has definitly been a good buying month so far.

It doesn't appear that it is on the GCD. These are frequently referred to as Gemstone "annuals." They were the normal Gemstone issues bound together in 4-6 issue runs. A great buy at $2...I have a number of these, but War Against Crime is not one I see for sale very often.

I spent a few hours at Mid-Ohio Con on Saturday. I don't have the patience (or the knees!) to dig through longboxes like I used to, but I did grab a couple of beat-to-hell reading copies out of the dollar bins:
Teen Titans #15 ("Captain Rumble Makes the Scene!") and 28 ("Blindspot", with that awesome cover of Aqualad clobbering Robin)
Blackhawk #200 (Lady Blackhawk becomes "Queen Killer Shark")
Unearthly Spectaculars starring Jack Q. Frost #2 (first time I've ever seen one of these Harvey superhero books)
80 pg. Giant #2 (Jimmy Olsen - lots of wacky transformations in this one, natch)
Paid 3 bucks each for copies of:
Children of the Night Tide (1986 collection of fantasy stories by Jan Strnad, Dennis Fujitake, & Tim Solliday)
Night and the Enemy (1987 collection of sci-fi stories by Harlan Ellison & Ken Steacy)
Also picked up a half-off copy of the Daredevil Masterworks reprinting DD #33-41 (The Beetle, the Trapster, Dr. Doom, the Unholy Three)

Big update for me, and the first in this thread in quite awhile; I was at Fallcon in St. Paul this week and spent about $150, mostly on trades and mini-comics as I forgot my "want" list and didn't have the back for bending down this weekend. Here's a list of the mainstream trades I got (they aren't all classic; sorry):
Love and Rockets New Stories volume 1
Epileptic 1 (French artist David B's great autobio, and I don't really like biocomics)
The Original Nexus (I've only been able to find issue 3 of the original run; yay!)
Lucifer volumes 7 & 8 (what a great follow-up to Gaiman's Sandman)
Y: the Last Man volume 10 (had to finish the run)
Krazy & Ignatz 1925-1926 (LOVE)
Black Hole (based on recommendations here)
Animal Man volume 2
Kane volume 3 (I've been a longtime admirer of Paul Grist's art, but I've only ever read two issues of Jack Staff)
Batman: The Dailies 1943-1944
Fourth World Omnibus volume 4 (they will look so pretty on my bookshelf)
I got to talk to Peter Tomasi about Green Lantern Corps and all the great books he's edited. I spoke with Howard Chaykin for quite awhile but am afraid to post the transcript because it might be libelous. I got to meet one of my favorite writers, John Ostrander, and have him sign Wasteland #6:

It's my birthday today, so I treated myself to a few goodies over the lunchhour. I found the following for $1 apiece.

I also found a remaindered copy of the book Art Out of Time for $15 (it was originally $56 Cdn). Just a collection of old, lesser known strips (strange reproduction technique), but there is some good stuff in there and I'm hoping the Introduction has some good information for me. I was bad to my wallet again today, and as part of my $100.00 () purchase at the shoppe today I picked up Showcase Presents the Blackhawks and DC Goes Ape.
I've read a couple of stories in each, and I think the Ape volume is better. Although after flipping through the Blackhawk book, I think it gets better -- if that's the right word -- later on.

I have. It's excellent!!! I can't say I've read every selection in there, but the majority of the stuff I have read was phenomenal and really introduced me to a lot of artists I'd have otherwise never heard of.
Plus the success of the book has led to at least a half a dozen new reprint projects like I Shall Destroy All the Civilized Planets (Fletcher Hanks) and Where Demented Wented (Rory Hayes) both from Fantagraphics; and more on the way. So make note of the artists you like in it and take a peek on Amazon, they may have a reprint book coming out with more good stuff.
Really just a great book, highly recommended to fans of both classic comics and alternative/art comix.

I just received, but haven't yet read, a 3-pack of Tower's Undersea Agent. I paid I think 6.50 for the lot, so we are are not talking Wall Street type bailout here.
I have most of the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents series already and while I didn't expect this lesser title to match up to it's flagship cousin I was interested in checking it out, especially since I have a fondness for 50's and 60's underwater adventure stories.
The lot I picked up consisted of Undersea Agent 1,3 and 6. Unlike T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents , which is replete with it, the only Wally Wood art to appear comes with the cover of issue #6 (the last in the series). The bulk of the artwork comes from the pencil of Ray Bailey, a comic book creator I'm sad to say I have only previously heard of in passing. It's not spectacular stuff, but it comes in a nice lighthearted 60's rendering. He's no Bill Everett or Russ Heath when it comes to depicting great underseas action, but there are plenty of "Davey Jones (the wonderfully named hero of the series) battles exotic sea creature or enemy agent frogmen" scenes to enjoy.
A real highlight though are the Gil Kane drawn stories. All the artists fabulous signature ground-up perspective shots and dramatic foreshortening are at work in the series. I love this period of Kane's career. His pencils and storytelling were so unique for their time. Borrowing some from Kirby perhaps, a Kane story is; nevertheless, instantly recognizable (no matter for which publishing house he was working) as just that..."a Gil Kane story." Nothing generic.
I mentioned a Wally Wood cover. Well its a beaut... Here it is, from Undersea Agent #6.

I had not thought about those comics in a long time. Grips was really bloody and violent for a superhero book at the time. There was a bunch of that kind of stuff being put out for a year or two in the 80s there in black and white.

I ended up with around eighty issues of Conan the Barbarian, filling in some major gaps in my run. Lots of 50 cent and dollar finds, but also found #5 for $12 in VG/F, #7 for $10 in VG, #9 for $7 in F, and most importantly, I finally picked up #23, the 1st appearance of Red Sonja in VF for only $18.

I bought up a few of the Joker's solo comic from the 70's as I knew they'd inevitably go up in price after TDK and I might not buy them later if too expensive.
Not at home so don't recall issue numbers exactly but I bought issue one for £20,with Two-Face;
the issue with the Creeper;
the one with Lex Luthor(very funny, they meet up in the cinema by chance, go for a burger afterwards, then swap personality traits by way of sci-fi machine, Lex gets Joker's sense of humour(which he does not want to give up), and the Joker gets Lex's scientific genius)
and the issue with the Scarecrow which wasn't that great, issue 8 I think.

The Beaverton Goodwill store strikes again!
Marvel Tales #205, 206, 210 & 226 - all of which have Spider-Ham backup stories. The lead stories are from different eras:
205 reprints MTU #69 by Claremont, Byrne & Villamonte.
206 reprints MTU #70 by Claremont. Byrne & DeZuniga.
interesting note - the former was from Archie Goodwin's last month as Marvel's EIC; the latter issue was Jim Shooter's debut.
210 reprints ASM #134 by Conway, Andru, Giacoia & Hunt, with a new cover by Mike Zeck.
Second appearance of the Punisher (just a last-panel cameo).
226 reprints ASM #91 by Lee, Kane & Romita, with a new MacFarlane cover, and the Spider-Ham story is by Fred Hembeck.
This one opens at the funeral of Gwen's father.
American Flagg! #5 and 36, joining #6 that I got last time.
Jon Sable, Freelance #4 - my first of this title, although I've read the novel.
Nexus #17 - a Judah Maccabee story by Mike Baron & Eric Shanower.
Magnus Robot Fighter #1 - the Acclaim/Valiant version from 1997.
Quantum & Woody #4 - my first of this title also.
Still a large pile of comics there at the store.
Edit: forgot to mention that these comics were 99 cents each.

You don't know how lucky you are. Imagine walking into a thrift/charity store and finding a whole stash of American comics!! The chances of that happening here in England are approximately 3,720 to 1 ("Never tell me the odds!" - name that movie?).
I guess because those US comics were never really on sale over here back in the 70s and 80s, you'd only ever find the black & white English re-prints. Not that you'd find those very often I don't expect...I've never seen comics of any kind in a thrift store in my life. I'm sure anyone with a stash of old comics in this country would be utterly convinced that they're sitting on a fortune and flog 'em all on eBay instead.

I picked up Fantastic Four 168-170. Good story arc with Luke Cage. Great fight scenes. Had to pay a bit for them, but since I am trying to collect every FF comic before I die, sometimes you decide to pay a little extra. Especially since any FF 150 on up I want in VF or better. But anyways it was a real fun read and another 3 issues down in my quest for FF completion.

I'll buy just about any Ess. of stuff I don't have, or don't plan to buy. I stopped buying the FF ones because I have (almost) from 100 up. I got the DD vol 1, but that's just because some of the early ones I own (i've got the run) are graded or in VERY nice shape and the Ess. travels better.

For 50% less than cover price I picked up a sweet two-pack of Detective Comics.
Detective Comics 481 and 482, two of those fabulous dollar comics from the waning years of the 70's I got for 50 cents each.
http://www.comics.org/graphics/covers/87/200/87_2_000481.jpg
Issue 481 features all new art by two of the best artists ever to put the dark knight to the page of the funny book.
You get Marshall Rogers and Don Newton goodness. There is some so-so Don Heck art in there (I like Heck, but mostly as an artist in fields other than the superheroic). It all ends with the recently re-reprinted (In the DC Goes Ape tpb) Jim Starlin story wherein Batman takes on the great white ape. Starlin, provides very typically signature, but nice, layouts and P. Craig Russel finishes in excellent style.
http://www.comics.org/graphics/covers/87/400/87_4_000482.jpg
Issue 482 concludes the Starlin opus, and Russel's fine line looks as good as it has since any of his War of the Worlds or Doctor Strange work.
Also there is a great Michael Golden penciled Demon and Bat-Mite story.
That's some nice comic book art for 1.00!
And looking forward to some nice reading.

Storage is a big thing for me too. Essentials like you said travel better and all i need is a shelf to put it on. I just really got sick of trying to hunt down back issues when they were alot of them were collected in trade form already.
I am still buying alot of 80s indy books in single form cause alot of the trades are expensive and its cheaper to hunt them down. Like the American Flagg trade i think last i checked goes for $30 i could buy the issues in 50 cent or dollar bins at my lcs.

I think you can be excused... Toth's take on the Question is like peanut butter and jam. I have only seen random panels from that work, and it looks simply fantastic.
I also spent a little coin a Toth comic I'll mentioning in these parts in the next little while.

Detective Comics 481 and 482, two of those fabulous dollar comics from the waning years of the 70's I got for 50 cents each.
I re-bought those two off e-bay last year to replace lend outs. 'Murder in the night' was one of my fav Batman stories when i was a kid, and I have to say, it still is, sci-fi brain transplants an all. Love the artwork and layouts. there's a great set of panels where batman goes from terribly frightened to terribly determined.
I also like how in the story Batman basically messes up('I've broken the cardinal rule of detective work, expect the unexpected') and escapes with the life at the end due to a fluke. Not too usual.
I got Justice League of america no.80 from 1970 off e-bay the other day, it was ok, a Denny O Neil/Dick Dillon one. I'm still waiting on a slightly older one getting posted through with Zatanna and Batman on the cover, don't recall number.

The Complete Peanuts 1967-1970 boxset. I look forward to these releases every year. I'm about halfway through the 1967-1968 volume and savoring it.
I bought Jordan Crane's Non #1-5 for $46 on ebay. I've never seen a single issue selling for less than $100, so I was quite pleased. And I bought two lots of Evan Dorkin titles and some Richard Sala graphic novels from the same seller to take advantage of combined shipping.
After years of "I'll buy it next time" I finally tossed Justin Green's binky Brown Sampler on top of an Amazon's order. I also picked up Art Spiegelman's Breakdowns after reading a half dozen reviews (great stuff!).

I had a pretty reasonable day down at my LCS today. They were having a £1.00 back issue sale, so I was able to fill in a few minor holes in my collection as well as try out some new stuff that I'd never read before.
I got half a dozen mid-90s issues of Spectacular Spider-Man that have inched me just a notch closer to completing my collection of the entire Clone Saga.
I also got a reprint of the X-Men #4 (originally published in 1964 and featuring the first appearance of the Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants) as well as Man-Thing #1 (1979 series) and Marvel Premiere #35 - #37 featuring the first appearance and origin of 3-D Man.
I'm particularly pleased with the three Marvel Premiere titles because 3-D Man (the second one) is currently appearing in Avengers: The Initiative and is playing a fairly important role in the Secret Invasion saga. So I'm interested in finding out a bit more about the original 3-D Man.

It's been six months since I last bought something comic related and, even though money is tight, that's all I can stan's, I can't stan's no more! So I just ordered myself The Essential Ms. Marvel and two Showcase Presents collections: Blackhawk and Sgt. Rock. I've never read the stories featured in either DC volume and I'm looking forward to it, especially all that Kuberty goodness awaiting me in the Rock book. As for Ms. Marvel, I had the complete run back in the day and recall as being one of the more imaginative (and, significantly, less verbose) Claremont runs with swell art by John Buscema, Jim Mooney and, in the later issues, Dave Cockrum. It also includes one of Mike Golden's most spectacular art jobs from Avengers Annual #10, which I can't wait to savor in glorious black-and-white. Now if only the anticipation doesn't kill me before they get here...

I'm hoping to send off for the Supergirl volume this week, as it happens.
Paid $5 last week at the LCS for a G-VGish copy of Gold Key's The Invaders #3. That's a bit more than cheapskate me is normally willing to pay for a single comic, but (a) it completes the 4-issue set for me, (b) I'd acquired the other 3 for pretty darned cheap (probably about $5 combined) a few weeks earlier from Lone Star, & (c) a somewhat cheaper copy (especially when the onerous 10 percent sales tax we're charged around here) I'd been planning to order from Lone Star had gone away while I was compiling my next order, leaving only a *choke* $90+ NM copy available.
Besides, quite a few of you have gathered by now that I'm a sucker for (a) Gold Key comics from the late '60s in particular & (b) UFO-themed comics from that general era. (The Invaders TV series would've come on the heels of the next-to-last massive UFO flap in the U.S., from '66-'67. I've since obtained the entire series on DVD-R -- I gather it's since been released legitimately, though at the time it hadn't been* -- but I remember seeing only a few minutes of one episode as a kid, though I still vividly remember the scene of the alien's body vanishing.)
*Of course, buying the bootleg was my little contribution to ensuring that it was mass released for the rest of America. I did the same with American Gothic, The Lone Gunmen, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. &, um, The Beverly Hillbillies. Given that principle, I'm sure it's only a matter of time till ThirtySomething's & Laredo's times come. Sometimes my sense of selfless sacrifice stuns me ...

I got a lot of back issues over the holidays. Some Dazzler, Punisher, Avengers, Darkhawk, and a few other filler issues. Knocked off a few things from a list I have of Spidey appearrances. I have all but like 5 issues of Avengers from 196 to today now. Also scored some Barry Windsor Smith Storytellers for free.

Went bargain-hunting on Lone Star's site a few days ago & emerged (the post office willing, as always) with the following low-grade items --
Amazing Adventures #5 (the only Inhumans/Black Widow ish I lacked)
Marvel Premiere #30 (I had the first Liberty Legion issue, but not the second)
Marvel Super Heroes #14 (my lack of which I was whining about elsewhere on this forum just a few days ago)
Rima the Jungle Girl #s 5, 7 (leaving me only #6 from having 'em all)
Showcase #s 66, 67 (these will mark my initial exposure, for better or worse, to Bwana Beast), 78 (I had this one as a kid ages ago) & 94 (didn't realize I was missing this Doom Patrol revival-of-sorts issue till its cover popped up on the recent 12 Days of Christmas listing)
Secret Six #s 1-5 (unfortunately, that leaves me still needing 6 & 7, which memory tells me were the only two I picked up off the spinner racks way back when)
DC Special Blue Ribbon Digest #2 (leaving me #s 20 & 21 from the complete run)
Average cost of probably $2.25 each, brought up by Amazing Adventures & Marvel Super Heroes each clocking in at close to $4 (i.e. what Marvel is gouging the fanboys for more & more often for a newly released comic).

Damnation. That Avengers #5 was one of the oldest Marvels I owned, back in the day, & was the first ish I had in a run through #24, I believe, thanks to my purchase of a grocery sack full of old Silver Age stuff for a few bucks from a former friend when I was a high school senior. Oh, well -- easy come, easy go.
Otherwise, courtesy of FedEx my latest Mile High order arrived during lunch. Mostly recent-ish stuff, but also
John Carter #s 1, 2, 9 & Annual #1 (I love Rudy Nebres inking Gil Kane)
Skull the Slayer #s 3-6 (found the first couple in a dollar bin not long ago & figured I might as well get the rest of 'em, since I remember liking it OK back in the '70s)
Kull the Destroyer #19, 31, 23, 25 (nearing completion of the run)
Demon Hunter #1 (probably the most interesting-sounding Atlas Seaboard color comic that I don't own ... I'm pretty sure I never even picked it up when it was on the spinner racksm, for some reason, which is odd, since I was very much into horror comics back then)
Alter Ego #46 (I'm about 8 issues from owning 'em all)

Just a handful -- #s 17, 22, 24, 27 & 28. They're not expensive or anything, but I'm an utter cheapskate who refuses to part with much more than $1 a copy. I obtained all the Severin issues quite some while ago, not surprisingly, & had probably Ploog's first 2 or 3 ishes, so I decided recently I might as well go for the whole thing.

I recently found the first 18 issues and a few out of order issues of Omega Men for 50 cents at a used video game store. I also got some here and there issues of Louise Simonson's run of X-Factor, including the Judgement Day storyline, which I really enjoyed.
I bought some more X-Factors, some of the first ten issues or so and the issues that were right before the Inferno storyline.
Picked up six issues to fill in some gaps in my early 400's of Batman, and some fill in issues of LOTDK including "Going Sane", which was very well done. I really enjoyed reading that story.
I think there were some more, but I can't think off the top of my head at the moment. I have yet to read the Omega Men issues yet. But hopefully I'll get a chance to read them this weekend.

That's a really cool (not to mention large) collection you've got there pmpknface and I love how you've organized the room. I also have to say that even though I'm not really a collector of superhero busts or statues, yours look really nice in the display cases. It must've cost you a fortune to buy them all. I notice that they’re all Marvel too…which I approve of.
I have one question though. What's with the 30 long boxes behind the cubes? It looks as though you can't access them without dismantling the cubes, is that right? What's the thought behind entombing your comics in this way?
Is it the CGC mentality gone crazy?!

Thanks! I do have some DC animated style statues, but I haven't found the best place to put them out yet, so they are still boxed up. I'll rotate them in eventually.

It's out of necessity really. If I didn't put them there, I'd either be wasting that space, or I'd have the comics in the "back" attic which is the typical non-insulated, bare-bones attic. So yeah, I can't access them as easily as I'd like, but I'm working on a system.
Before I put the cubes up I put as many comics as I had that belong in those boxes away. Now I have 1 long box that's out and I'll put anything that belongs back there in this new box. When it's full I'll take the cubes down and dive back there. Maybe a few times a year, unless I need something.
I had to back there to get something the other day and had to take 3-4 of the cubes off and it was no biggie. I just stacked 'em back up!

Awesome. I picked up the limited HC, that came signed, a while back on a sale day at my LCS. I've now got all 3 vols, but haven't gotten around to readin the 3rd vol. Went to Wondercon on Saturday, and got a bunch of books. I filled holes and completed runs rather than going after big ticket items. IMO there were a lot of good deals in the dollar or $2 boxes this year, but the higher end stuff was not as common, and tended to be higher price. Maybe they'd rather Ebay that stuff?
Anyway, I got lots of bronze age books, including Thor, Doctor Strange, Detective Comics, Batman, Tarzan, Superman, Action, and some horror titles. I also bought some recent books I missed, like the "New Fantastic Four" run with Black Panther and Storm. I love Paul Pelleteir's art, but it just wasn't in my budget at the time. But $1 apiece, I grabbed them up! Overall, I spent less money at this year's con than any of the last 10 years, though I came home with nearly as many books as I usually do, I just didn't buy any big ticket books. The Wondercon definitely seems to be shifting more and more toward a movie and TV star meet and greet and less and less back issue comics galore.

Or not. #11 launched a complete change of direction (suggested by the change in title from Kull the Conqueror to Kull the Destroyer) that, in my opinion anyway, ruined the book, turning it from one of Marvel's best series of the early '70s into just another cookie cutter Conan knock-off.

Kull doesn't strike me as something I would pick up on my own, just out of pure curiosity and not knowing anything about the character.

The Conqueror run (which includes Monsters On The Prowl #16 and a short back-up in Conan the Barbarian #10) features Kull as king of Valusia, an ongoing plotline about the conspiracy to dethrone him, a large supporting cast and the best sword-and-sorcery art team this side of Hal Foster: Marie and John Severin. (The first issue, by Ross Andru and Wally Wood, is nearly as good). The Destroyer issues find Kull off the throne and wandering, Conan-style, in plots heavy on mindless action. They aren't bad comics. They just aren't the things of beauty their predecessors were.
Hope that's helpful.

To me it sounds as if I would enjoy the Conqueror plot as well. What you describe the Destroyer plot to be, is probably one of the main reasons that Conan has never appealed to me. The closest I have gotten to something like these was the first two Ka-Zar series, and really a lot of that purchase was based on was the really good price I got on both the series in their entirety. The last series was well based on Thanos appearance in it. But to me the series didn't hold itself up well after that intital storyline.
Thanks for the information sir. I'll keep my eyes out for them and give it a whirl. If nothing at least I will have added some more Ploog art to my collection.

Killraven (P.Craig Russell need I say more) Luke Cage (pure curiosity) and Captain America vol 2 (Kirby, Steranko, and Gene Colan, this was a no-brainer). I just found some very interesting classic comics at book fairs:
Ten Ever-Lovin' Blue-Eyed Years with Pogo is a collection of Walt Kelly strips commemorating Pogo's tenth anniversary in 1959. It contains Kelly-selected strips and running commentary similar to the Calvin and Hobbes tenth anniversary book. HERE (http://john-adcock.blogspot.com/2008/03/ten-ever-lovin-blue-eyed-years-with.html) is a nice write-up of it. I got the second printing from 1987, so copies should be around for fairly cheap!
Take Ten is Shel Silverstein's first book, collecting his single-panel gag strips from Stars & Stripes magazine.

Mile High’s adding a 30 percent off codeword sale to top of some already decent across-the-board discounting lured me into submitting a ridiculously large order a few days ago. Most are in G-VG condition, with an average cost of maybe $1. Along with a fair amount of stuff from the last few years, the FedEx man is bringing me --
DC
World’s Finest #284 (Legion appearance, natch)
Secret Six #7 (I now lack only #6)
Justice Inc #4 (gives me all the issues)
Black Lightning #s1-8, 10-11 (the entire run, except for the obvious #9)
Mystery in Space #s111-114 (already had #115)
Time Warp #s1-2, 4-5 (already had #3)
Marvel
Kull the Conqueror #s 17, 22, 24, 27-28 (completes the run)
Marvel Feature 1-7 (the entire Red Sonja run)
Red Sonja 1-5 7-9 12 15 (one of my favorite comics as a kid – I had a letter in #9, if memory serves)
Black Goliath 2-3 5 (I lack only #6)
John Carter of Mars -- I forget, but 4 or 5 ishes early in the series (I love Rudy Nebres' inks, & I think I'm getting comics with his embellishments of pencils by Gil Kane, Tom Sutton, Dave Cockrum & Carmine Infantino)
Charlton –
Billy the Kid #129 (the last “All John Severin” issue)
Many Ghosts of Dr Graves #6 (one of my favorite comics ever)
Korg: 70,000 BC #s 1-9 (the entire run … gotta love Pat Boyette)
Tales of the Mysterious Traveler #15 (Ditko reprints!)
Gold Key --
X – The Man with the X-Ray Eyes #1 (I’ve chronicled my sad overpaying for this elsewhere)
Harvey --
Bunny #s 6, 9, 17 (my sad devotion to this childhood favorite from Harvey continues unabated)
And several others from, respectively, Charlton & Gold Key, that I can blame on Lone Ranger’s extolling their virtues in his “Scott’s Classic Corner” column at Comics Should be Good &/or his blog –
Ghostly Tales #69
Haunted #s 17, 56
Space War #30
Vengeance Squad #s 2-3, 5-6
Tiger Girl #1
Microbots #1
Shadowplay #1

Bought this out of curiosity from Mile High for cheap. Read it, can't make heads nor tails of it. Is it a pastiche? A parody? A political polemic? An extended in-joke? It surely has to be one of the oddest things I've ever run across. Anyone who has read this and can shed any light on this comic, please do so. Yeah, that is NoMan of the THUNDER Agents on the cover. (From what little I've been able to glean from the internets, this was to have been a 4-issue series, and the THUNDER name was legally licensed from John Carbonaro; it has something of the feel of a 2000 AD filler story, with none of the Brit humour or snark, however. It's in black and white, and the layouts and art are amateurish in the extreme.)

I bought the first nine issues of Gerard Jones and Mike Parobeck's El Diablo earlier today. Just finished the first story arc (1-3), and I must say I'm quite impressed. A good, uplifting read with some really nice art. (Even though the concept is a little bit too close to another catholic lawyer/vigilante with an infernally inspired name.)
I also got DC Comics Presents 31. A Superman/Robin team up with some gorgeous Garcia-Lopez artwork. Haven't gotten around to reading it yet, but, despite it being written by Gerry Conway, I somehow doubt it's nearly as good as Cinder & Ashe.

I strolled into a Vintage Stock yesterday and stumbled upon a cache of Golden Age goodies priced at...wait for it...50 cents each. Yes, I'm not kidding. Here's what I bought:
Our Army at War: #2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 21 (1953-1955)
Star Spangled War Stories: #5, 14, 16, 20, 24, 26, 36 (1952-1954)
These were all in G-VG range, complete, no pages missing, no cutout panels, slight cover browning, minor creases. An amazing haul. I had seen these same comics priced as high as $50+ in the past year, under the shop's glass counter. I guess a change in management dictated that these slow-moving back issues get dumped. Hard to believe. But I was in the right place at the right time.
There's a wealth of Gene Colan and Jerry Grandenetti art, tons of Irv Novick, several Bernie Krigstein stories, a couple of Mort Druckers, Oksner, Infantino, and a Russ Heath job, too. Plenty of boring foxhole tales, but some offbeat goodies, too, such as "Combat Cowboy" and "Fighting Mess Sergeant."
One thing that really stands out is how vivid the colors are. DC's printer must have supersaturated the presses during the '50s. Very bright, deep hues.
Actually, there's more. But I'll save that for another post.

Conan : death covered in gold, one of the character's last mini-series at Marvel. I wasn't even aware that it existed before seeing it mentioned in Alter Ego, since I had lost interest after CtB and SSoC were cancelled. The late 90s Conan mini-series were usually very bad -with the Cimmerian apparently wearing a costume made of steak over his already large physique.
Luckily, these three issues are written by Roy Thomas and pencilled and inked by Jonh Buscema, so they don't look like somebody's idea of what a video game starring Conan should be like.

I found a book called Bobby Thatcher (including Phil Hardy) 1925-1927 by George Storm at a Half Price Books yesterday. It's a collection of (according to Bill Blackbeard's introduction) the earliest serious action-adventure strips to use realistic violence. Published in the 70's by The Hyperion Library of Classic American Comic Strips. $4.00, can't beat that.
Other than that I've mostly just been buying new collections of classic comics. The Complete Terry and the Pirates Volume 6, Fantagraphics' collection of Harvey Kurtzman's Humbug. Jerry Dumas and Mort Walker's complete Sam's Strip, Herbie Archives Volume 2, and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting.

At my LCS this afternoon I picked up 3 new/old items.
1) The Supermen, edited by Greg Sadowski. I know this Fantagraphics volume has been mentioned several times elsewhere on this forum. And it's delays have been many (along with the interminably late Blazing Combat, which looks very soon set to appear, if we are to judge by the video of disembodied hands flipping through an apparent ready-to-sell-copy on the Fantagraphics website, and a generous PDF peek at the insides).
The book looks fantastic. As great as can be expected repros of, among others, early Fox, Novelty and Fiction House comics, including their gorgeous covers are represented. Some of the classics are here, like Fantastic Comics #1, with its its insanely delicious Lou Fine cover, and the very creepy and dubious Silver Streak #6, by Jack Cole. Besides those two, we get Simon and Kirby (credited and pseudonymously), Fletcher Hanks, Will Eisner, Dick Briefer, Bill Everett and more.
2) The Bizarre Comics of Boody Rogers, edited by Craig Yoe (he of Arf magazine). This thing lives up to any mind blowing expectations those looking forward to it might have had. It's a laugh out loud insane excursion, and kind of shocking in places. Well, brilliant is what it is. Unfortunately covers are not included with these fantastic Golden Age resurrections of the original Prize comic publications. But man the Babe stories alone are guaranteed to haunt me for some time to come.
3) The Marvel 70th anniversary Captain America one-shot, by James "golden age" Robinson and Marcos "man he can draw" Martin. The new material is a semi-extended look at an episode in the life of a very young Steve Rogers, before the super-serum, before Captain America. I am sucker for stories dwelling on this time period, so apparently rife with fifth columnists, sinister rumblings of secret super weapons, persistent rumours of Nazis on the shore, and of war on the horizon (well Canada, Australia and Europe were already there). A nice little story, well scripted and drawn. And the back up tale reprises the Simon and Kirby classic from Captain America comics #7. Wonderful, wonderful stuff here. Sinister indeed. And Kirby exploding of the page like no one else did. Yes, he was doing it back then
(Also, as a footnote, I encountered the name who Chu Hing for the first time. Listed as a potential credit on the S&K Cap story, I did some research. He was a Chinese-American comic book artist who for a time worked in the Simon and Kirby studio, and did early work for Timely. Also he created the golden age Chinese superhero the Green Turtle (http://www.comics.org/details.lasso?id=4212)to take on the then Japanese enemy. Okay it's pretty corny, but pretty interesting too.

Well, I didn't do as well at Emerald City this year, largely because of budgetary restraints, but I did have a fruitful hunt through the dollar boxes at Randy's Reader's Comics. To wit:
The Eternals #19
Ka-Zar (1973 series) #7, 10-11, 17
Skull the Slayer #3-4
...completing my run of these titles. I was so jazzed about finishing Eternals, I bit the bullet and paid $2 for #19!
I also picked away at several other series by purchasing
Giant-Size Avengers #2-3 (Still need #4 to complete the Celestial Madonna storyline)
The Inhumans #8
The Invaders #17, 26, 33, 41
Machine Man #10-19 (the Ditko half of the run; I still need #4 and a couple of 2001s to complete the series)
Marvel Premiere #42-43, 49, 51-53, 55
Red Wolf #2
Thor Annual #9
I also started collection two new series, both 1970s Marvel Westerns:
Gunhawks #1
The Outlaw Kid #12, 16
Later, in a box marked "Graphic Novels 1/2 Off Cover Price," I found:
History of the DC Universe #1-2, amusing because it was totally obsolete within a few months of publication
Batman / Captain America, an enjoyable John Byrne Elseworlds
Superman: The Earth-Stealers, purchased solely for the gorgeous Swan/Ordway art
To round out my acquisitions, I snagged a couple of heavily discounted Essiantials volumes:

I've been to my local used comics shop today and got:
Kings in Disguise 1 - 6. I read years ago and remember liking it a lot. With a new depression coming, it seems a good time to read it again.
Ginger Fox GN by Mike Baron and Mitch O' Connell. The artwork looks great. I have a little problem with Baron. I love Nexus, but so far I haven't really been impressed with anything else he has written. I hope this one doesn't dissapoint.
A collection of Gil Kane and Ron Goulart's Star Hawks.
DC Comics Presents 11. Superman vs. Superboy. Art by Dick Dillin, an artist I'm becoming more and more fond of.
An Accidental Death by Ed Brubaker and Eric Shanower. Just finished it. An excellent read. Shanower is one of the best artists out there. Brubaker I only know from Lowlife and Scene of the Crime, both of which I enjoyed. I see he mostly writes superhero comics these days. Are they worth picking up?

Brubaker is most definitely one of the best writers in the business right now. Seriously. He's probably THE best writer Marvel currently has and DC was crazy to let him go.
Picked up an entire run of Rom Spaceknight except for Annual # 1 for the amazingly awesome price of $ 45. How could I resist ?
Was spending money on prints and sketches but was sorely tempted by a copy of Teenage Dope Slaves and a Russ Cochran collection of Frontline Combat. I've had most of the EC sets over the years but an ex sold them along with some other fantastic stuff, but that's the one that probably hurts the worst.

I just received confirmation of the following classic comics from my recent order from Lonestar:
Adventures into the Unknown #3 - from A+ Comics, features Al Williamson, Wally Wood, and Joe Orlando reprints
DC Special Series #27 - Batman v. Hulk
Ghost Manor #1 - Charlton; Ditko story
Ghost Rider #81 - last of the first series; I had this one years back, the silverfish at my parents' shed liked it more than I did.
Haunted #56 - Charlton
Haunted Love #1 - Charlton
Hellboy Wake the Devil #s1-5 - leaves me with one more Hellboy/Hellboy-related comic to get
Monster Madness #2 - Marvel; heard about these, but never read one, and I found this one cheap
Mystery Comics Digest #9 - The Twilight Zone!
Red Circle Sorcery #10 - Love the Red Circle horror comics
Weird Mystery Tales #14 - Fantastic Luis Dominguez cover
Here was my haul from a small local convention last week. I got my first three issues of Neal Adams Brave and the Bold at a pretty good price (6 more to go). I couldn't find the Batman issues I was looking to find or Conan #3 at the right price, which are the classic issues I'm looking to find. I go the Kull and Sword of Sorcery at 2 bucks a pop, and most are in really nice shape.
Brave and the Bold - 80, 84, 86
Conan Annual -1
Kull - 2. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11 (& Creatures on the Loose 10)
Sword of Sorcery 2, 3
I also got a couple of newer trades at 5 bucks a pop.

Thanks, b-d. I've enjoyed reading them. The stories are actually quite good compared to the stuff being churned out in the superhero genre during the time, and there is at least some attempt at historical authenticity in the names, places, and costumes, if not the manners and mores of the Old West.
Yes, I was tempted to try to find "Ralph Crews" in 2009, but a Google search produced too many possible candidates, including a dentist in Philhadelphia.

Half a dozen issues of Savage sword of Conan from Nostalgia Zone finally completed my collection! Yay!!! They were scattered here and there from the 80s to the 90s, so they have a variety of writers and artists : Chuck Dixon and his no-nonsense action tales; Roy Thomas and his scholarly knowledge of the character; Gary Kwapisz and his fantastic natural landscapes; Ernie Chan and his powerful brushstrokes; the underappreciated Mike Docherty; and last but certainly not least the Spanish master Esteban Maroto. It's great to finally bring a collection to completion.

To be honest, I've had to modify my goals so as to keep family well fed.
I'm only going to complete a run of the painted 'blue shirt' covers - those early issues are too hard to find and can be too pricey for my current situation. I've got 80% or so of the painted covers.

I just picked up a Amazing Spider-Man #92 in VF- condition at my LCS. I had back issue bucks* and some money from fixing a co-worker's computers and I couldn't resist.
(They also had a really nice copy of #87 that I was drooling over...)
For those of you keeping score at home -- I now have 53 issues out of the first 100 issues of Amazing Spider-Man.

I took my tax check and bought a couple volumes of The Spirit Archives on ebay. Got some of the non-Eisner ones really cheap (I'm a completist).
I went up to Austin Books and Comics for Free Comic Book Day. I picked up Luba #7 and 10, thus completing my post-Love and Rockets Vol. 1 Los Bros. Hernandez collection. Ironically right at the same time that the Luba hardcover is coming out from Fantagraphics. Oh well, I sold my Palomar and Locas hardcovers to make way for those new complete L&R collections, and I'm sure all of the Luba stuff will make it into one of those some day.
I also grabbed Classic Comics Press' The Heart of Juliet Jones Vol. 1 by Stan Drake. I'd always heard about the strip and I had some renewed interest after the last issue of Dave Sim's Glamourpuss photorealism essay. Art looks great, I think I'll take it on my vacation next month.

Picked up a nice CGC3.0 copy of Tales to Astonish 27 (at a decent price not the over inflated "hey there's a movie coming out price"). I'm a HUGE Hank Pym fan so this was a holy grail book for me and finished off my TTA run (27-101) so I am pretty damn pleased :).
Looking at completing my Batman run from 1970-1980 next....

Have you taken it out of its slab so you can read it yet?
SpeakerDad
05-11-2009, 12:57 PM
Nope, didn't take it out of the slab. Have the Essential Ant Man (and TTA27 has been reprinted many times) for reading. Normally not a CGC kinda guy but for "important" issues, I tend to look in that direction. As much as I love to read my collection of comics there are some that I am not going to risk taking in / out of bags or slabs.
I've been working my way through Creepy Archives vol 2 and Eerie Archives 1. In these early issues the art still ranges from very good to gorgeous, though, like with many reprint collections, there's a certain letdown in the sameness of a lot of the stories.
The revelation here is Gene Colan (always credited "Eugene Colan"). I don't normally think of him as a Warren artist, but his work here is beautifully drawn and very dynamic. It has a (hate to use the word) gritty realism that's missing in a lot of the other artists. The slick paper really shows Torres, Williamson and Morrow (when he's not using tones) to best advantage.
Sadly, Joe Orlando is the artist that comes off looking bad in these collections. He was never a favorite of mine, but next to the other artists, his stories come off as just OK. (I still think he's one of the best editors ever to work in comics, though).

Tales of the Bizarro World TPB
This would've been one of the very, very first -- maybe the first, if one disregards the somewhat proto-trade likes of Origins of Marvel Comics & Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes: Batman -- trades I ever bought, back before I got back into comics (just as the "Tales of the Bizarro World" 80-Page Giant, Superman #202, was one of the first comics I reacquired via eBay around the same time) was one It also may well be the only comics TPB I've ever given as a gift.
What a great collection!

I just bought the Flash Gordon movie adaptation by Ad Williamson. It's a graphic novel format oversized book, and might actually be the best thing that Williamson ever did. He seemed to really go overboard on detail. It's gorgeous.
This was one of my first comic purchases when I was a kid, and it's even better than I remember it. Can't say much about the actual movie, but Williamson's treatment of it is superb.

And I didn't know there was an adaptation. I'll have to be on the lookout for that.

Just stumbled across this Classic Comics set of threads. Glad to find some people who talk about the books I'm most interested in at this point in my collecting career.
Picked up the following yesterday:
Avengers 112, 121 and 136
Captain America 170 and 171
Defenders 3, 15 and 16 (only seven more to go in this run)
Invaders 1 (only one more to go in that run)
Iron Man 81
Marvel Spotlight 13, 21 and 22 (Son of Satan issues)
Super-Villain Team-Up 10
The Confessor

I take it your a fan of the Invaders then? I've never read it (although I do own the New Invaders mini-series from 2004) but I've toyed with the idea of picking up the three "Classic Invaders" TPBs but I don't know, for some reason I keep refraining. I've heard some pretty harsh things about the artwork in this series.
I'm generally a fan of Silver and Bronze Age Marvel, would you say The Invaders are a necessary purchase for me?
Likewise, I've never read any Defenders but have long been intrigued by the basic concept and team line-up...not to mention the covers I’ve seen from the series. How does The Defenders compare to The Invaders?

The art in Invaders does take some getting used to, and there is this annoying habit they had of using reprint stories from the '40s as the main story in certain issues (they'd reprint the origin of Namor or show a classic battle of Captain America as part of the main story, whether due to cost saving measures or writers/artists being behind schedule). Invaders is OK, but nothing I would highly recommend or say is a necessary purchase; the two  were because I'm a completionist and I'm close to being done with that series.
As for your second question, there is no comparison between The Defenders and The Invaders. The Defenders is a far superior book in every aspect, although it is a bit quirky; if you're expecting a straight superhero book like The Avengers or Fantastic Four, you might be disappointed. Go into it with an open mind and you will be pleasantly surprised, although the final 25 issues or so (if you get that far) are tough to slog through, as the series was losing serious steam and was pretty much just hanging on at that point.

Hmm... how come the words Captain America in your response are hyperlinked to "ballscrews" And the words super hero is liked to the show Friday Night Lights.
Edit... looks like its okay now. Must have been some strange spam sabotage.

Received -- finally! -- Fantagraphics' Blazing Combat collection via Amazon. Looks great, of course, though I was a bit surprised to see that Frazetta's incredible covers are fully reproduced only as ... well, not thumbnails, but not a whole lot bigger than that, in the interview section at the end. (A couple are partially reproduced in full cover on the flyleaves & endpapers.) Hardly a deal-breaker, but I was still taken aback a bit.
At the completely opposite end of the spectrum, I've got Harvey Comics Classics Volume 5: Harvey Girls coming in the mail even as I type.

I picked up #15 many years back (around 1994) for like $40. It's the best condition I have ever seen a comic book that old in. I would swear it's damned near mint, but never had it appraised or anything like that. It's for sure a VF+. Sometimes you just can't help but grab good deals like that.
