I just took a punt on a hardcover collection of Will Eisner's Hawks Of The Sea newspaper strip. I've been keeping my eye on this book while it's sat there on the shelf at my LCS for the best part of a year. The price has been steadily creeping down and down until today I saw that it was just £5.00...which isn't bad when you consider that the RRP is £14.99. Anyway, I figured for that price, what the hell!
Apparently, these stories were originally published between 1936 to 1938, pre-Action Comics #1, which probably makes it the oldest stuff in my collection now - as far as original publishing date goes.
So, is anybody familiar with this newspaper strip? Is it any good? I only really know Eisner from his work on The Spirit during the 1940s but I'm assuming that this is going to be somewhat like EC's short-lived Piracy series. The artwork looks really great.

I REALLY like it, but I'll buy anything with Pirates in it. So I'm a fairly huge fan.
I believe there are a few strips missing - at least in the version I have - so the story continuity is a little boinked, but it's a solid rousing adventure story all-the-way through.

The local shoppe seems to have picked up a couple of collections recently, and lo! there was a $3 copy of Gold Key's Twilight Zone #86. I passed up on it the first time I saw it under the mistaken apprehension that the series simply adapted stories from the television programme. Luckily I discovered my error before anyone else could snatch it up.
I also picked up Weird War Tales #117, plus a few issues of Firestorm and a few obscure titles I'd never heard of for 25-50 cents a pop.
Additionally, I visited a comics store near my girlfriend's house (this city has 6 comics stores that I know of, and had even more just a few years ago) which had the most annoying back issue set up I've encountered -- at first glance it seems like it's a regular set up, until you discover that rather than alphabetizing all of the titles, it alphabetizes the key ones but also has sections for "Other DC", "Other Marvel", and "Indie Comics".

Yeah, you're right, there are a few strips missing…I'd read that online before I purchased it actually. However, a friend of mine who's a big Eisner fan told be that due to the serial nature of the strips, this isn't really too much of a problem and it doesn’t impede the flow of the stories. You can pick up what's going on fairly easily.

Yeah, it doesn't kill the book.
Worth noting that it's never "OH MY GOD!" formally innovative like the Spirit or Uncle Sam. But the art starts solid and gets better all the way through.
Also: Credited to William B.(?) Rensie. That's some good pseudonyming.

I'm NOT a Batman fan, unlike our esteemed moderator and many of the regulars on this board, but I stumbled upon a small cache of Batman comics at Half Price Books' bargain bin yesterday. 25¢ for anything by Aparo is surely worthwhile, I thought. I have mentioned elsewhere that I'm seeing more and more stuff turn up at used and resale stores as people are dumping their comics collections for cash. These comics were bagged, boarded, and in excellent condition with nary a bumped corner or spine crease. They were marked down to a quarter and unceremoniously dumped into the CLOSEOUT bin, so I bought them all:
Batman 481-484, 486, 487, 491, 495, 498, 499.
All Moench/Aparo (except for one that had art by Tom Grindberg, but erroneously showing Moench and Aparo in the creator credits on the cover). Cover art by Aparo, Ed Hannigan, and Kelley Jones.
Early '90s stuff, with some unpleasant sadistic violence characteristic of the period. Aparo is his own best inker. Scott Hanna, Bob Wiacek and Rick Burchett aren't doing Aparo any favors, in my opinion. The art looks a bit rushed, but the old Aparo magic is still there in the solid layouts and always-inventive camera angles.
Story? Hm, the less said the better. Moench is generally a fine writer, but the "dark" stuff DC wanted for Batman during this "Knightfall" storyline just doesn't bring out his best. He seems pretty bored, frankly.
I would appreciate hearing some other views from the Batman aficionados here. Is this considered a high point by anyone? Am I missing something really interesting in this run? Please point out any felicities that have escaped me.

I like some of the pre-Knightfall Moench Batman stuff; like the issue in which he and Chase track down Claything (450?). A nice debate about superheroes as they enter the cave.

Picked up an issue of the 1992 Spectre series (meaning I have three non-sequential issues now) and a handful of the 2001 series from the buck-or-two bin. Since I've got the Archives and The Wrath of the Spectre, and since DC seems to have no intention of doing a Showcase Presents... The Spectre collection -- and why, I have no idea -- I've decided to pick up the single issues where I can, starting with the cheaper ones.
I also picked up the one-shot Nightmask comic Marvel put out when they briefly tried to bring back the New Universe. Not sure if it's any good, but I grabbed the first several issues of the original series out of a dollar bin a couple of months ago and thought it would go well with it. Now I'll probably get home and discover that I already had a copy.
I also decided against the Maze Agency issues they had there because I am wrongheadedly trying to curtail my impulse purchases and stick to the series I'm actively collecting. Likewise the big stretches of Grendel and Mage that they've recently deposited in the discount bins, largely because I can't make heads or tales of any sort of reading order.

I love the detail of the lit stogie sitting in the ashtray on the bar. It's like "S'cuse me, let me deal with this sh*t and get back to mah drinkin' and smokin'"
Love those L.B. Cole covers. I'm green, pmpkn. Lovely copy. This is the one-and-only issue of this "series," right? Star Publications had the most random and complicated issue numbering EVER!

And the smallest lettering ever!
I've actually found many Star books tough to read because they often squeeze a crazy number of words into each and every balloon and/or caption.
Great cover, though.
I have one Cole western from Star: The Outlaws #10

Yes, the detail on this is killer, even with the "poster colors" Cole used in this era. The story is funny too. This one guy goes into town, beats everyone at cards, gets drunk, and shoots a few people. Then when he shows up to do the same at another bar they're waiting for him and gun him down as he walks in. HA!
Yeah, this is the only issue of the run. A lot of the Star books would get canned and then they'd continue the numbering with a new title or break off 1 book into a few others. This was usually done to trick newsstand owners. They were forced to carry comics, but didn't necessairly like to so when a publisher wanted to cancel a title they wouldn't put a #1 on whatever replaced it because then shop owners woudn't carry it. Weird, no?
I don't have many Cole westerns, maybe 3-4. But I've got around 60 covers total. Oddly enough, I like the horror and romance ones the most.

I just did a quick scan of the covers from these books, and I would agree that there are loads of problems with this era (let's say from the Death in teh Family to broken back). The stretch of books you bought, in particular, aren't very good. The Bane stuff never worked for me, and as for artists, I like Jim Aparo from the early 70s until about 1985 on Batman, beyond that I'll take Norm Breyfogle.
I think the stretch of issues from #450-475 is much stronger. I remember really enjoying the Dark Knight, Dark City storyline with a rather sinister Riddler, and Tim Drake's emergence as Robin in a Scarecrow story.
The annuals were often good, however, including the Armageddon 2001 annual, and the Scarecrow Year One annual.
Detective Comics was also of a varying quality during the late 80s into the 90s. I remember enjoying the Mud Pack arc as well as the early appearance of Scar Face and Anarky, but there were some pretty dopey storylines as well. Quite often, the big villains were used too frequently and the Catwoman and Penguin storylines are often among the worst. Again the annuals are often enjoyable, and I really dug the Armageddon 2001 version.
http://http://seductionoftheindifferent.blogspot.com/2009/05/single-issue-hall-of-fame-detective.html
For my money, Legends of the Dark Knight was the most consistent Batbook of this era - with some really terrific stories, incluing Heat (with Russ Heath art), Grant Morrison's flawed but interesting Gothic, as well as Prey and Venom. There are some dogs in here, too - but overall I liked the longer form storytelling as it allowed the creators some time to give the reader their take on the character.

Slowly easing up on my purchasing moratorium:
My son has been showing great interest in The Wizard of Oz lately (read the book, seen bits of the movie), so I thought I'd try to track down a Classics Illustrated Jr. version for him. I don't want anything too old, as it will end up in shreds. Lone Star had a copy and while I was there, I picked up some stuff for me, and stuff to share with my kids when they are a bit older:
For Me:
Battlefield Action (1957) 84 FN $0.98
Late 50s Kirby reprints, I blogged about wanted this one a while back.
Blackhawk (1944 1st Series) 258 NM $0.98
Blackhawk (1944 1st Series) 263 NM $0.98
Getting closer to a complete run. The moment I do, they'll announce the trade.
Curse of the Weird (1993) 2 VF $0.80
Curse of the Weird (1993) 3 NM $1.30
I've really been enjoying these early 90s monster reprint books. I nearly have them all.
Man Called Loco, A (1995) 1 NM $0.98
Never knew this ACG book existed. I sold some of my Texas Rangers in Actin boks with Man Called Loco in them, so I was happy to find this - hoping for some nice PAM artwork.
For my kids
Classics Illustrated Junior (2003) 501 NM $0.98
Classics Illustrated Junior (2003) 519 NM $1.70
Classics Illustrated Junior (2003) 535 NM $2.30
These are Snow White, Paul Bunyan and Wizard of Oz, respectively
Marvel Tales (1964 Marvel) 138 VF $1.80
Marvel Tales (1964 Marvel) 150 FN $1.80
Marvel Tales (1964 Marvel) 153 FN $0.70
Marvel Tales (1964 Marvel) 155 FN $0.80
Early Lee/Ditko Spideys. These are also for my nephew who is about to turn 6. He received a Spider-Man poster and had a question for me about the image from the cover to Spider-Man #17, wondering why Spider-Man was fighting the Torch. I figure I'd let the book speak for itself.
Super Friends (1976 DC 1st Series) 16 FN/VF 7.0 $1.49
Super Friends (1976 DC 1st Series) 34 FN+ 6.5 $0.98
I've been picking these up whenever I see inexpensive copies - because they are great for kids and still much cheaper than a new book.

Shanower is a very devoted Oz fan, so it sticks pretty closely to the original work. So it's not nearly as sanitized as current childrens books, but it's not going to offend anyone who has read the original prose.

I found the Superman titles, Starman, Martian Manhunter, Supergirl, Young Justice, Young Heroes in Love, Chronos, Azrael, Creeper, Resurrection Man, Impulse, Hitman, JLA and Green Lantern all had excellent cross over issues. Most of the rest were fine, but I found Lobo, Chase and 1 of the Legion books a little meh.

Another surprise purchase. I stumbled on these in the cheapie boxes at another HALF PRICE BOOKS store. This was quite a load. Looks like the store either made a big collection buy, and just dumped everything in the markdown bin, or perhaps they were cleaning out their back room inventory. Anyway, 50¢ a comic on these seemed like an exceptional deal. The average condition was a very nice FN, with a few VF. Bagged, but not boarded.
Justice League of America (1st series): 111-116. Giants, all in very nice shape with great spines
Justice League of America (1st series): 159-160, 179-209, 224
Four Star Spectacular 1-6 (all Giants, condition VG to VG+)
Outlaw Kid 16 (new story & art by Friedrich & Ayers)
G.I. Combat 248, 252-257, 260, 266-267, 276-277, 279-82, 284 (average FN to FN+)
Ghosts 97-99 (VF+ to NM on these three)
Sgt. Rock 406 (VF)
Uncanny X-Men 212 (VF)
Superman 423 (FN)
Sgt. Rock Special 1-2 (1992/1994) VF
Sgt. Rock Special 11, 20 (1991-92) VF
Some of these I obviously picked up for their resale value (Superman, X-Men, Ghosts) but the rest were for my own reading pleasure.
I rarely see Giants from the 100 Page era in nice shape, and never in nice shape for fifty cents. This was a real find. The rest of the JLA run was a disappointment to me, frankly. The stories just struck me as faux-Marvel soap opera, and the characters seemed to be trying too hard. Conway just transplanted his formulaic plots and dialogue to DC. I was bored with this stuff. It doesn't stand the test of time. Some nice Perez work here and there in the run, but I like Don Heck the best. Dillin & McLaughlin are workmanlike and competent but not exciting. Jim Starlin did several mediocre covers in this run.
The war stuff was much more interesting. Anybody ever heard of an artist named Martha Barnes? I sure hadn't. A woman war comic artist from that time? Highly unusual. Six pager called "G.I. Samurai" in G.I. Combat #276.
Whether you like him or loathe him, Robert Kanigher knew how to write a war story, having penned thousands and thousands of them. His war stories, even when stupidly over the top, always have a distinctive snap, and sometimes are genuinely affecting. Kanigher had his pick of the best Filipino artists, and he worked with E.R. Cruz, Adrian Gonzales, Noly Panaligan, Vicatan, and Angel Trinidad, Jr. quite a bit. They are all top-notch illustrators and storytellers. Kanigher's HAUNTED TANK with Sam Glanzman isn't a favorite of mine, but I will read the stories in small doses. They all seem pretty much the same to me. Can Joe Kubert draw great covers, or what?? It seems impossible that he could turn out such stellar quality over so high a volume of covers over so many years. But there it is. Dramatic, intense, scary, eye-catching, inventive, iconic, pick your adjective.
Out of this batch, the comics that gave me the greatest reading pleasure had to be the reprints in FOUR STAR SPECTACULAR. Superboy and Wonder Woman are the headliners, but there are quite a few miscellaneous gems too. I liked reading these. They made me feel good.

That's probably about right. He's my favourite writer, and after the early 'sixties I'd say he never wrote anything without at least one point of interest in it. By the time your little haul came along, he'd been writing a Haunted Tank and a Rock every month for 25 or 30 years; that every year you got two great stories, two duds, four good and four so-so stories is better than we have any right to expect.
Ghosts was past its peak by the time you get as far into the run as you have here; I find the early issues of interest, given the rather restricted nature of the stories.

I picked up the first two trades of Roarin Rick's Rare Bit Fiends. I'd been looking for them for a while, so when I finally found them -- and for less than cover -- I had to snatch'em up.
For those who haven't heard of it, it's a series of comics written and illustrated by Rick Veitch, recounting his dreams. I'm not sure if the TPBs are still in print or not.

I've read a couple of those comics in the back of The Maximortal series--pretty neat stuff. I notice that Veitch/King Hell has a book called Rabid Eye: The Dream Art of Rick Veitch for sale HERE (http://www.rickveitch.com/store/), but it's not entirely clear if it's a collection or Rare Bit Fiends or not.

That's volume one. Volume two is Pocket Universe, and volume three -- which wasn't at the store I visited -- is Crypto Zoo. The lack of series name in the title does make it kind of hard to tell.

I just picked up Marvel Masterworks: Dr. Strange Vol. 2, which reprints Strange Tales #142 - #168. I've been kind of holding out for the last three or four years for Marvel to bring out a Dr. Strange Omnibus but I've finally bitten the bullet and decided to go the Masterworks route instead. I'm really looking forward to cracking this open, it looks like it’s gonna be a great read.
I just need to track Vol. 1 down now. It's out of print currently, I think and a copy of the last printing (2003) looks to be as rare as rocking horse s**t. Vol. 3 and 4 look to be easy to get hold of but that Vol. 1 looks like it could be a bugger to find. There's an independent, secondary seller on amazon.co.uk currently offering it for £770.00!!

Man, I can't mix hardcovers and paperbacks within the same series! That would play havoc with my anally retentive comic collector OCD.
Still, that's very interesting to hear benday-dot because I'm thinking about picking up the Daredevil masterworks too. If they're gonna be released in a cheaper paperback version, then that would definitely be the way to go. I might be tempted to start buying the Avengers too at this lower price.

Has anyone picked up the so-called Secrets of Sinister House Showcase out from DC this week? I grabbed a copy and will recommend it.
It reprints the complete original run of DC's short lived, hard to find (and expensive) gothic romance series Sinister House of Secret Love. The Toth illoed "Bride of the Falcon" is a rare treasure (I have an original, but this B&W looks just as good), and the Dezuniga art to be found in this volume is exemplary.
Besides SHSL, the book carries on with a first time collection of the successor series Secrets of Sinister House. The latter has a great gathering of the likes of Sekowsky, Alcala, Redondo, Nino, and Rubeny (a fave of mine)

Its certainly a tier below both House of Mystery and House of Secrets. Those books were DC's horror flagships. I didn't pick either of those up simply because I have a generous selection of originals. While, its true I also have several originals of Secrets of Sinister House, this latter volume has high value for the relative rarity and obscurity of its reprinted material. Most of this stuff, especially the 4 issues of Sinister House of Secret Love has never been reprinted before (I think perhaps a DC digest contained some material) and it is top notch IMHO. I expect this volume is also rather likely to go out of print before most of the Showcase volumes.

I consider this an *opportunist* buy. Cost me $200 + $20 shipping and includes a coveted #1 NM Dynamic Forces edition as well as both Wizard 1/2s, both #2s, the Payless 8, a regular #1 and KB edition and others right up to #67. I basically bought it for a couple key books and to resell over...did the math, should make back everything and essentially get to keep my #1 Dynamic Forces for free. Saw other DF copies go for as high as $200 each without being CGC'd and I did want another copy.

While not a comic per se, I did pick up the X-Men Omnibus, containing issues #1 through 31, for $50, half of the price printed on the back.
I only own two of the floppy issues in there (#'s 10 and 13), and since getting the rest of them would be very costly, I figured why not buy it and at least have the full-color stories to read, even if it is fudging a little bit on my goal to complete an entire run of Uncanny.
Lastly, anyone interested in buying a copy of X-Men #10? It has suddenly become expendable.

I just picked up the "James Bond Omnibus vol. 1" This came out just this week, and reprints the classic 50's and early 60's British James Bond comic strips from the Daily Express. The art is superb, by John McClusky, and is in the fine British adventure strip tradition that excels at that exciting blend of grit, atmosphere and realism. Just great draftsmanship. There is a resemblance to the work of Jim Holdaway and, it seems to me, Don Heck.
One disappointment is the complete lack of background information on not only creators, but the emergence of the strip itself. There is rather useless and uninteresting introduction by Roger Moore. Oh well, it was only $16.95.

For 50 cents? That's remarkable. I see that Lone Star is listing a Fine copy for $48 even as I type. A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to get it & the out-of-print first TPB (which I've also seen go for dozens of bucks) for something like $8 as a Buy-It-Now purchase from an eBay seller who had no clue what he had, or otherwise I'm sure I still wouldn't have a complete run of the title.

Yeah, Rich Johnson over at Bleeding Cool was just blogging about that book and what it goes for on the bay last week. I think I had a copy and sold it a while back when I sold my whole BoP run.

He tried to chat me up and get my number, so I gave him one...it really belonged to a mortuary. I then asked him how much the comics were, pretending I don't know anything and smiling at his fat ass. He began to talk one load of BS and tell me comics are valuable blah blah blah and that he was going to check some outdated WIZARD to estimate a price. He told me to hang on while he went to look for one...
Well while he was gone, his (mom?) came into the store, offered me the books for $3 each because she didn't know a thing either, and I bought all 3 copies. I told her quite sweetly it was for 3 friends (Me, Myself & I) and I bailed before Igor reappeared with his 5-day old beard and sales pitch.
I sold one of those books for $12 within 24 hours and kept the 2 VFs for myself...not bad huh? Wheeee!

Local comic con today. Here's my haul:
Ajax All True Romance #23, May 1955, VG
Charlton Career Girl Romances #49 VG+
Plop! # 3, 6, 11 (with Toth art), 17, VF
The Castilian (Dell Movie Classic, 1964) FN
Adventure Comics #385 (Supergirl) VF
Incredible Hulk V1 #148, 155, 162 VG/FN
...plus a few modern variants that caught my fancy. About $50 all told.

Was this the Spectre show? I just saw your post in "The Hunt" thread about growing up in St. Louis, and now I see you mention going to a show today, so I was wondering if you and I were at the same place.
Anyway, I was at the show and got off with a nice haul. I'm trying to move more towards trades, which is reflected below.
I picked up two volumes each of Hellboy, The Invisibles, and Transmet, along with Gaiman's Books of Magic, Akira vol. 3, and the second collection of Evan Dorkin's Dork series.
A local comic reviewer had a table where he was selling advance review copies of stuff. I got copies of The Essential Dykes to Watch out For, Sikoryak's Masterpiece Comics, Jamilti by Rutu Modan, the second Aya book, an R. O. Blechman collection, the 2002 Zippy the Pinhead annual, and 9 issues of The Comics Journal, all for 15 bucks! The advance copies are B & W and softcover, but I'm still thrilled at the deal. A miscommunication led to him throwing in the Method Man comic as a pot sweetener--what the heck, I'll take it!
I plugged a couple holes in my JLI and PAD Hulk runs. I forgot a list so I had to go from memory. I was very pleasantly surprised I actually bought only issues I didn't already own!
Finally, I picked up issues 1 & 3 of The Masterworks Series of Great Comic Book Artists, featuring reprints of Frazetta's Shining Knight and Wrightson stories from House of Mystery and Plop! I'd never heard of these. They came out in '83, apparently as a joint venture of DC and Sea Gate Distributors (which I'd also never heard of but was apparently one of the first direct market companies).
Good day! I'd have got more if I didn't need to buy a car!

My dealer at the time also became a good friend of mine and I'd sometimes help out at various local comic conventions - I'd cherry-pick some of his best books on 2-3 tables I was given to control, and he'd let me sell my own books too. This gave me ready-made access to a lot of local collectors, many of whom ordered from Mile High Comics and appreciated getting books for substantially less. Some of them were gawkers too, as if they couldn't believe girls sell comics too (I'd bring 2-3 of my mates along, one was a model, the other a local Miss Wet T-Shirt).
That was in my early 20s while I was still on campus and had some free weekends every now and then  Still in my 20s but time isn't as free anymore...so I've adjusted accordingly.

I just picked up the first two volumes of Grant Morrison's JLA and an older, pre-movie edition of American Splendor at the Strand in New York. (The Strand's comic section is better than expected — though NO Sandman?!?! — and their "new arrival" cart is full of random deals.)
I'm through the first volume of the JLA, and I like the tone Morrison establishes. It's campy, but true to the DC universe, even if it feels a little stereotypical.
I've got a plane trip next week, so I'm waiting to dig into the American Splendor. I've never read it, and hate to admit it. So I'm fixing that. It's this version:

Much better than the movie promotion version. Though, I remember thinking the movie was pretty well handled.
That what I just bought.

I'm not gonna pick, but I loved the American Splendor movie. It was really endearing, and I liked the interaction between the real and fictionalized Harveys. I had never read (or even heard of) the books prior to the film, and it made me search them out. It's my favorite movie based on a comic.

Now I only need: 1, 9, 11, 12, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 23, and 24 to finish the run.
He still has a few left if you're interested. Send him a PM. He came down on his asking price, common on this board, so don't feel bad about sending in a lower offer.
Now I'd like to find the rest of the Man-Wolf Creatures on the Loose and those Morbius Fear issues.....

Before the days when it took infinite crises and civil war agonies over the course of multi-title crossover events, comic readers could be mightily impressed by the sight of scuba divers, fast cars, tarantulas and cool spy gizmos.
And I think I still am... going by my extremely positive reaction to Dark Horse's volume #1 of Jet Scott, A Lost Science Fiction Masterwork.
That bit about masterwork may be some hyberbole at work, but if there is any truth to it then it is due to Jerry Robinson's exquisite work.
Robinson by any measure one of the Golden Age's finest cartoonists, gives this old school adventure strip his all, and this reprint from Dark Horse, with its large scale reproduction of the B&W dailies and drop dead gorgeous Sunday strips in full colour does it all magnificent justice. Can't wait volume #2.
Here are a couple pages (apologies for the cut-off of these images on my smallish scanner)

Jerry Robinson co-created the Joker and Robin and is one of the greats of the Golden Age. He doesn't get enough credit because Bob Kane was really good at hyping himself.

Well he was good friends with Stan Lee.
Bob learned from the one of the best in that department.
Just got a giftcard that I used at one of my lcs', and these are the classic comics that I got. Some are in decent condition, others have some wear, but they are basically okay. I might also be mention to others, who may scratch their heads at the mention of Jerry Robinson, that he is one of the, sadly now very few, original super-hero pioneer creators still among us. He will even attend Comic Cons now and then. I think he went to San Diego last year.
I was just checking on Wikipedia, and not surprisingly, Bob Kane disputes Jerry Robinson's claim of creating the Joker. Sort of like Lee and Kirby's differing as to who invented Spider-Man, Kane contends that Robinson merely presented a Joker playing card as the basis of a character idea.
I actually like Kane's cruder looking Bat-Man, believing it works well with the no nonsense hard-boiled early sense of the character. And Kane did get more sophisticated as he went along. Still, it is Jerry Robinson's and then Dick Sprang's Batman that really brought DC's famously famous character alive. Robinson is one of the Golden Age's most creative and able craftsman. His designs are natural and very aesthetically pleasing.

Those of you who saw the Atari Force thread in this forum will know that I've recently discovered (or re-discovered) this excellent 80's series. I went comic shopping on eBay yesterday and managed to pick up issues #1 - 6, #10 - 17, #19 and #20 in VFN condition for just £1.00 per comic (including P&P). So that means that I'm now only 4 issues away from a complete run - or 10 issues away if you include the original 5 issue mini-series and the Atari Force Special (which I certainly do ).
In the same order, I also picked up a half dozen random issues of mid-1990's Sensational Spider-Man, Web Of Spider-Man, and Spider-Man Unlimited which have inched me ever closer to completing my 90's Spider-Man Clone Saga collection.
I also picked up Justice League of America #198 & #199, both dating from 1982 and featuring a storyline in which the JLA travel back to the wild west to hook up with Jonah Hex!

Working at a comic store means I get to see what kind of deals Diamond offers; while they usually aren't much, sometimes something good comes up. For instance, they were offering 85% off Marvel Essentials recently, so I grabbed Defenders volumes 2 & 3, Man-Thing, Fantastic Four volume 3, and the first X-Factor book (mostly for Walt Simonson's art).
Similarly, Dark Horse was offering 60% off some of their hardcovers and archives, so now I finally get to read Herbie.
Coming in with the same order is the first Grimjack omnibus... I'm going to have a lot of comics to read.

Attended another regional con this weekend. Lots of goodies. Here's some of the stuff I found. More later...

1. Lone Ranger Golden West Giant (Gold Key, 1966). This was a surprise find in FN/VF condition. This one-shot Giant reprint (from Dell Giant 1956) is a beauty. Inside pages pristine off-white. I never expected to run into such a nice copy, for so little. $15. I'm showing you the front cover and the gorgeous photo back cover pinup.

2. Great Society Comic Book #1 (1966). NM copy for 50¢. A perfect condition copy. I read about this comic years ago on Scott Shaw!'s Oddball Comics (you can go there and read about it, too) but have never ever seen a copy. Now I have my very own! The cardstock cover has a matte finish, which makes it distinctive. Tony Tallarico is credited with the art, but the GCD indicates that Tallarico did the finishes over Bill Fraccio's pencils. Their generally execrable work was a mainstay of Dell in the 1960s, but this satirical political comic is really pretty good. I have no idea who the writer, D.J. Arneson, is. But I'm tickled to own this thing. A piece of history. I'll show you the back cover, since you can see the front at mycomicshop.com:

3. Amazing Spider-Man Golden Press (1977). Now this is an oddity. Again, I've never actually seen a copy prior to finding this for 50¢. It's 32 pages, mostly typeset text, with some nice illustrations (some full page) by Al McWilliams. Written by Mary Mintzer (who?). This is a Golden All-Star Book "coloring book" style comic featuring three stories: The Captive Crowd, Aunt May's Crusade, and The Taking of Manhattan Isle. This was initially intended for a bookstore children's market, I think. The art is really interesting. Thank god that hideous logo never got re-used for any subsequent Spidey books!

Snagged a couple of unexpected Classic Comics bargains today when I visited my LCS and saw that they had about half a dozen used Marvel Essentials TPBs on the shelf. Most of them were Fantastic Four volumes (which I'm not interested in because I'm going the Omnibus route with the FF). I picked up Daredevil Vol. 1 and Sub-Mariner Vol. 1 for just £3.00 each...and they're in immaculate, just like new condition. I wouldn't normally pick up volumes of the Essentials because black & white comics aren't really my thing but for that price, I couldn't resist.
I'm semi-familiar with the early issues of Daredevil but the Gene Colan and Bill Everett artwork in the Sub-Mariner book looks really great.

Looking at it and the year in which it was published, I wonder if it was at all inspired by the song "Superbird" by the politically active, San Francisco acid rock band, Country Joe & The Fish?
"Superbird" is pure political satire and aimed squarely at LBJ, depicting him mockingly as a superhero. The song was first released in 1965 on the band's Rag Baby: Talking Issue #1 EP but later gained much wider fame when it was included on their Electric Music For The Mind And Body album, which was released in early 1967.
It’s probably just a coincidence but I thought I’d mention it.
You can read the lyrics to Superbird here...

I paid $2 each for the Silver Age titles listed her, and 50 cents for everything else. I really think it's a buyer's market out there right now.
With these buys, I have about completed my Jonah Hex run. Almost there with my Gold Key/Charlton Phantom run, too. The Newton issues in high grade are the highlight of this list, as far as I'm concerned. I have less nice copies of all his issues, but these are just gorgeous. For $2 a pop I couldn't resist, even though they are dupes.
The Nexus #101/102 (parts 3 & 4 of Space Opera) is weird. It's relatively new, but must have gotten almost no distribution through Diamond. It's almost impossible to find or order. So I snapped up five copies in NM condition for 50 cents a piece just to have them. I would gladly have paid full retail for it had it been available, anywhere, when it was brand new.

Nice going! I aim to get there myself one day but I've got a looooooong way to go yet. It’s interesting that you picked your issues of Jonah Hex so cheaply. I had decided to refrain from buying any further issues of JH for the time being because I thought I'd started to see the prices rise in anticipation of the film release. Perhaps I was mistaken.

I just picked up Music for Mechanics, Chelo's Burden, and The Lost Women and Other Stories by Los Bros Hernandez. I've read (and loved!) Gilbert's stories included in the big Palomar hardcover, but Love & Rockets is still largely a big hole in my comics reading experience. I've been meaning to pick up the new softcover L&R collections (I've heard they're the easiest way to follow the series chronologically), but I found these old trades for three bucks a piece.
Does anyone know what exactly is collected in The Lost Women and Other Stories by Jaime? I can't find anything substantive online. I think it contains L&R stories, but I'm not sure. Is it a collection that predates the other trades, perhaps?

Oh, man, I've been looking for these! Weren't they delayed a whole lot (in fact, I'm not sure if I knew both had actually been released)? Maybe comic shops tended to over-order #100--a bunch of unpurchased books sitting on the shelve combined with lateness might have encouraged owners to pass on subsequent issues (who knows, that's all just a guess).
If you want to get rid of a copy of each, please let me know!

Yeah, they are L&R stories, I think from pretty early in the original run (Maggie's still thin).

Just purchased a copy of X-Men #29 graded good for my uncanny collection. I would have preferred a better grade, but for $9.00 after shipping I went ahead and got it. I figure I can always resell it for at least what I spent if the condition bothers me that much.

I really like the cover design on those OOAW issues. They didn't use it much, however. I can see the difficulties in coming up with a justifiable reason for only "using" one-third of a cover.
The design was only used for portions of 1963. I wonder what went in to the decisions to try, then abandon, the design.
This issue from some years prior presages the other covers

Ah, excellent, some of the Michi good luck is rubbing off on my friend LR! These are great finds and good value for the money! (Of course it's just Canadian play money )
Seeing that Mission: Impossible cover reminded me, sadly, of the passing yesterday of the second leader of the Impossible Missions Force, Jim Phelps (aka Peter Graves) at the age of 83.
Graves is survived by his older brother, actor James Arness, who played Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke for many years. Arness is 87 this year.
As for actor Steven Hill, portrayed on the cover of #2, which you picked up, he has an interesting history as well http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Hill

An unexpected bout of the flu knocked me flat for a few days so this is my first chance to report on my loot from this year's Emerald City Comic Con. I had a smaller budget than usual and prices overall seem to have gone up but I still came home with a nice stack of books. To wit:
Captain Savage 18
Combat Kelly 1-6, 8 (actually spent $4 for #1!)
Firestorm 1-5 (the complete original series, which I've never read)
Gunhawks 4
Marvel Chillers 1-2
Marvel Premiere 33-34 (Solomon Kane by Howard Chaykin)
Marvel Presents 2, 5-7, 10
Metal Men 45-50, 52, 56 (all the Simonson issues and then some)
Mister Miracle 20, 24
Showcase 101-04 (completing my run of this title)
Super-Team Family 11-12, 15 (just a couple more and I'll have all the DC Silver/Bronze team-up titles)
Wonder Woman 325
I also found someone selling Essentials for just $5 a pop so I picked up
Essential Luke Cage, Power Man, Vol. 2
Essential Spider-Woman, Vol. 1-2
Alas, these were the only ones they had that I don't already own.
My old friend Bill Wormstedt, who was set up at the con to sell off 30,000 of his 33,000-book collection, gave me his NM copies of the $.25 Ka-Zar #1-2! (Of course, he could afford to be generous, having just sold his Incredible Hulk #181 for some $1,700.)
Nor was Bill alone in his generosity. Rob Allen gave me his duplicates of Monsters Unleashed #1 and Comix Book #3 (Marvel's short-lived and wrong-headed venture into undergrounds) and our pal MichikoS sent me a copy of Western Team-Up #1.
Most importantly, I had a great time hobnobbing with long-lost friends (hi, Frank!), chatting with old pros like Len Wein and Val Mayerick (I'm so angry at myself for not checking the guest list and bringing stuff to be signed), testing a touch pad system that may well be the solution to my computer-related mobility issues and just generally geeking out.
Can't wait til next year!

Into my LCS, the wonderful and renowned Strange Adventures, for a signing and great little chat with guest Cameron Stewart (Seaguy, Batman and Robin) I broke my comic moratorium to pick up a rare copy of Goodwin and Simonson's 1979 classic Alien graphic novel, originally serialized in Heavy Metal magazine. Found a nice little buy today. I try to stay under modern cover price for back issues unless it's actually worth something. Today I found that something - I picked up a copy of Amazing Spider-Man 252 (1st black costume in asm) for a mere $10. It's in really nice condition as well and after seeing this issue fetch anywhere between 30 and 60 dollars on eBay I decided it was quite the bargain. I plan on getting it slabbed, as I feel it could get graded in the upper 8's, if not a 9.0.

Holiday Comicswas one of the kids comics from the Star Comics line back in the 1950's. The best part about these books are the great covers. Holiday Comics only lasted a short run, like most of the Star Books, before morphing into something else. There's a few Christmas covers, a 4th of July cover, etc. The interiors are nearly all funny animal cute stories and games.
The other 2 books I bought arrived as well: DICK COLE #7 & DICK COLE #8 from 1950. Both cost me about $30 total, shipped, as they were from the same guy. #7 has a cool 4-panel cover. I love how in the 4th panel he's leaping from a moving bobsled onto a moving car!

I went to some antique stores with my dad when he came to visit and found a bunch of Master of Kung Fu comics in a box for a couple bucks each. I'd never read it before, so grabbed a handful, mostly based on the recommendations of this forum. Sadly, none of them were Gulacy issues. I ended up with issues 27, 57, 91, 104, and 125.
I think I expected a more cerebral comic, something more along the lines of O'Neill's run on The Question. I wasn't disappointed, per se, but I wasn't stunned by awesomeness.
Basically, I'm waiting for one of my fellow posters to say something along the lines of, "The issues you got aren't sterling examples of the series. Keep looking!"

Aaron, the issues you got aren't sterling examples of the series. Keep looking!
#27 precedes the first great Gulacy arc (around issue 30 I think)
#57 follows the greatest Gulacy arc (45-50)
# 91 and 104 have Gene Day art, which I hoped you enjoyed, but the best stuff of this period comes a few issues later with Fu Manchu's return
#125 is an issue I am always finding in $ bins, and alas is not even written by Moench.

I went to a comic shop for the first time in several months and went with the intent to clean up on back issues, but there were none to be found:frown:
I need to find a good shop in SoCal for back issues asap!
Just bought Cherry #3. A little more than I usually spend but it finished the series so I'm dome with it:cool:

You also have the Cherry's Jubilee and Deluxe as well?
As much as Cherry was just an adult comic, Larry Welz could draw a great comic.

Saw a few nice Golden Age books, but didn't pull the trigger. I soooo wanted a sweet FLIGHT COMICS #10 I saw (look it up). Instead went mostly bargain shopping. Picked up:
- 12 FF's between 101 - 190, now I only need 2, 3 to have from 100 & up. Mostly $5 a pop, one was more.
- 18 Master of Kung Fu's (need 23 now), some were Giant Sized - no more than $2 a piece
- 3 Marvel Chillers, Tigra
- Strange Tales #124, $5
- Marvel Feature #2, #9 - $5 each (nice shape too!)
- No Brand Echh #1
- Nick Fury #12, BWS cover
- Peter Porker #1 for a buck
- Moonshadow 1-12, all for $12
- 7 Marvel Previews
- 3 Marvel Treasuries, 17, 19, 21
and the find of the day....
Marvel's the LIFE OF POP JOHN PAUL II for $5 in sweet condition.

I went out of town to visit some family that was throwing my wife a baby shower, needless to say I went to every comic shop. My dad also gave me an old box of comics he had, all of which were in mint condition. It's lot of justice league, and some random crap. I'll update this when I get home with a full list of what I purchased and received. It's probably about 60 comics.

There are two small creases on the spine. Other than that, its in good condition. Got it for $25. Great find? Not really. The same comic shop had GIJoe #1-10 in good condition for $70 a few weeks ago. The day I saw it there they were having a 30% discount on everything too. Iron Fist #8
Iron Man #'s 51, 53, 56, 58, 61, 64, 66, 68, 72 and 79
Luke Cage, Hero for Hire #1 (last one needed to complete the series)
Man-Thing #'s 4, 11 and 20
Marvel Spotlight #14
Thor #'s 201, 202, 205, 214 and 222

I went to the anniversary sale at Future Dreams this weekend instead of the Stumptown Comics Fest. It was a tough choice, but I made out OK.
There were two sides to the sale. On the three-books-for-the-price-of-two side, I picked up:
Palestine, the Special Edition hardcover, by Joe Sacco
The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For hardcover, by Alison Bechdel
The Art of Spanking, by Milo Manara and Jean-Pierre Enard
All of which I've wanted for years.
The following were all $1 each:
Kung-Fu Fighter #16, 17 & 18 - already had 1-15.
Howard the Duck #20 & 27 - now I need #19 to have 1-27.
Marvel Two-in-One #35 (Skull the Slayer) - now I need #34 to have 1-42.
Conan #115 - still need 87 and most of the 90s, and 101-114, but this was a double-size 10th-anniversary issue.
Radioactive Man (Bongo) #2-6 of a 6-part series from 1994, and volume 2, #5 and #8. I think they had #1 of that 1994 series, but it didn't qualify for the sale. I'm going to go buy it anyway.
All 5 issues of the recent Zimmerman/Severin gay Rawhide Kid series.
And the oldest one: Blackhawk #197, which is a cavalcade of riches:
- introduces the team's new red-and-green uniforms
- features one of the silliest-looking monsters of the Silver Age, a giant pink turtle
- instead of letters, the fan page has mini-biographies of Arnold Drake and France Herron, in which I learned that Arnold's brothers were successful songwriters who wrote one of my mother's favorite songs, "Mairzy Doats"!

Thanks to Mile High Comics' sale on eBay (you only pay shipping for the first item), I finally, finally got my own copy of Conan the barbarian #24, one of the best-drawn comics ever. I first bought a French translation in 1976 and several reprints over the years (in Savage Sword, in Treasury Editions, in Dark Horse's Chronicles of Conan) but never found an original copy at a price I was ready to pay. Now it's done!
I also bought Legion Lost #12, which completes my run (left one issue short when I moved away from the DC area and from any comic-book shop). It's pretty hard to find a single issue of a 12-issue limited series with a low print run; they tend to be sold as complete sets.
I also jumped on two issues of that wonderful and lamented Marvel mag, Marvel Preview, and got #1 and #9.
The balance of the order was composed of an assorted array of Tarzan books, both DC and Marvel. There's one issue of Tarzan family with a John Carter tale that doesn't seem to be a reprint... I'm curious to see what it is.
I'll be a happy camper when the books come through the mail!

I wonder if we all remember our first serious back issue purchase; that very first time we considered paying a large amount of money (adjusted to our income, of course, which at the time was probably that of a newspaper run) to buy a comic-book...
My first such purchase was Savage sword of Conan #1, which I paid $18 in 1979. I don't think I ever paid as much for a comic since! But I never regretted it. Mine was G.I. Joe #26, the first part of the two-issue "Origin of Snake-Eyes". I dropped about $10 on it in 1987, which, for a 14-year old who mowed a few yards each month during the summer for spending cash, was a pretty big chunk of change.
I'd picked up the series with number 51 or 52, buying the books before I went away on vacation with my family to have something to read; grabbed a few more issues while I was away from a convenience store in Ocean City, NJ that, IIRC, had three or four spinner racks full of books. Got back home and started working backwards, because I'm a compulsive completionist.
G.I. Joe was my "gateway drug" into comic books, as those first few minor purchases have now grown into a 6,000+ issue (all Marvel) collection at this point. My wife jokes that if she could go back in time, she would hunt me down and start dating me then so that our house would have more storage space now

My first couple of eBay comics purchases, about 10 years ago, would've probably been my first outlays of more than cover price for any issue -- Superman #202 (the "Tales of the Bizarro World" 80-Page Giant) & a lot of a half-dozen or so Captain Americas from roughly 1969-1970, most prominently including 2 of Steranko's 3 issues.
No idea what I paid, but I think the Superman was around $12 (the Cap lot probably was about that as well), including shipping. That's a bit high (though if memory serves, it's in pretty decent shape -- almost certainly a grade or two above the copy now in my complete 80-Page run), but hell, I'd been away from comics from a couple of decades, so what did I know.
(Irritatingly enough, I have no bloody idea where those comics have gone in the meantime.)

HOLY MOLEY!!!
That's bloody impressive, that is!
Isn't it though. It's funny that when I was first began collecting comics in the early to middle 70's the fabled Ditko era, of which Amazing Fantasy #15 kicked things off, together with the early Kirby era of the 60's Marvel Age seemed positively antediluvian. Those grand years that existed in my imagination as a kid truly seemed of a kind with the actual Golden Age of the 40's in terms of distance and perspective from my 5-10 year old self starting out as a comic "collector."
But now that I muse on it today and look back, Kurt's 1978 purchase was actually much closer in time to Amazing Fantasy #15 than today is to 1978... 16 years removed to be precise. While 2010 is a whopping 32 years distance from Kurt's phenomenal purchase.
While it may have not have seemed like it at the time, my years as a comic collecting kid in the bronze age had after all much more in common with that magical period of the silver age than does any current interest I have in the funny books have to my youthful beginnings in the 70's. It think this holds true not only in terms of years, but in the whole "feel" of the different eras.

But now that I muse on it today and look back, Kurt's 1978 purchase was actually much closer in time to Amazing Fantasy #15 than today is to 1978... 16 years removed to be precise. While 2010 is a whopping 32 years distance from Kurt's phenomenal purchase.
I know what you mean; I can't get over the way our perceptions change over the years. Comics from 16 years ago feel brand new to me! 1994, wasn't that they year of the Legion reboot, the end of Ennis' run on Hellblazer, or the end of Conan the barbarian? I could swear it was just yesterday!!!
Still, Amazing Fantasy #15... It's like finding a Gutenberg Bible or a copy of the Voynich manuscript. It's more than a valuable comic, it's a part of history!

Just got Showcase Presents The Warlord Vol. 1 in the mail on Monday. I've been dying to read this series and now I've finally got it. Already got through the first couple of issues. This one did not disappoint. Very happy with the purchase.

I picked up Vol. 1 on the store shelf when it came out. Haven't read it yet though.
I sure hope it is better than the new series which has progressively gone downhill the last few issues.

Interesting. I've been enjoying the current series, but I've only been buying the issues Grell has drawn. I thought what he'd done with/to Travis was pretty ballsy.

Battlefields #4
These are stories about soldiers. Men who put on the uniform to fight for their country. In this case, those men are two tank crews -- one British, the other German -- in western Germany toward the end of the war, both delicately balancing the competing demands of doing their utmost to engage the enemy (even at this late stage) and doing their best to stay alive.
#6 comes out today! :)

Great buys DubipR. I have the Shadow and Secret Origins issues you picked up. Sometimes (a lot actually) I'll buy a comic just for the cover. That Crimson Avenger is one such case. Just a perfect cover by Colan. Fortunately, what's inside is quite equal to the eye catch of the preamble.

Niiiiiiiiiice.
Beats the heck out of the $16-or-so box of late-'60s DC & Charlton romance comics I came across at the closest flea market Saturday while looking for a cheap VCR.
Of course, a goodly percentage were coverless (even the ones with covers were pretty beat up), & those tended to be half-price. And everything was half-price, so a coverless romance comic could've been mine for a mere $4!
Uh ... yeah.
Somehow, I managed to resist.

I just scored a 22 issue lot of Brave and the Bold, between 167-200, this weekend for a little over $1 a piece. I feel lucky that there are no dupes at all with the few issues I already have. It has some great covers, and I am looking forward to seeing Batman and I... Vampire, Batman and Superboy and the Batman and the Outsiders preview.

A whole bunch of Tarzan comics from DC, Dark Horse and Marvel (including about one half of the Marvel run). I got a few issues a few weeks ago and they really stirred y interest.
The Tarzan Marvel run basically had only three extebded storylines: an adaptation of the jewels of Opar by Roy Thomas, a Pellucidar story by Dave Anthony Craft and Bill Mantlo, and a Tarzan in New York piece by Mantlo.
I must say that although I was sometimes annoyed by some of Mantlo's writing (especially in the 80s), I am very impressed by his work on Tarzan. In one simple but great scene, he turns a very old cliché around : an African princess who got lost in Pellucidar is met by a young white-skinned savage who, considering her strange dark skin, her regal presence and her incomprehensible words, is convinced that she must be a goddess. I think it's the first time I see that, after dozens of cases of blond European ladies mistaken for goddesses in stories set all around the world. Excellent job, Mr. Mantlo !
